Description
A beautiful day in Setano village, full of sunshine and a cool whisper of wind. On this picturesque day Delphi found herself lying in the grass, her Palamute Mynto napping at her side. The road from Setano’s gate wasn’t far away and the clear area around it was perfect for basking in the sun during a lazy quiet day.

Her content smile turned into a grin as she thought of the days to come. Those days would most certainly be less than quiet. Back to her joyful and exciting life. The injuries she had recieved from the urgent quest to the everchanging isles would be fully healed and she would finally be free of the constant mother henning of her palico and friends. Though if she considered it fully she didn’t mind the extra attention from Artemis and Hexx. Not after she’d had time to reflect on how she felt for them.

It brought warmth to her heart and energy to her daydreams. In fact it was like she could hear Artemis chattering on in that adorable way right now.

Wait.

Her eyes opened and she sat up. Glancing around. That voice wasn’t in her head. It was right across the green space.

The road. Artemis was coming up the road. With… someone?

Delphi squinted in the light trying to make out the other figure walking towards Setano Village. That red hair shining in the sun made her gut clench before she even made out the features of their face and the cocky swing of their hips while they flirted.

Oh.

That was… her.

Delphi felt every muscle tighten and tears pricked at her eyes. Quickly she rubbed them away with the palms of her hands. No. She was done crying over that.

So Delphi stood and turned toward the pair. Mynto finally raised his head and once he caught both sight and scent of the person with Artemis, he let out a snarl. Delphi’s hand found his soft head and she took a moment to steady herself with his presence.

She could do this. She knew that person well, or as well as one could know someone after one night. Even if Artemis wasn’t hers to protect yet. She couldn’t in good conscience let that girl get close to her friend. She knew how those honeyed words could eat you up and dazzle you into loving her. Just for her to use you and be gone the next morning without a word.

So she set off across the grass at a brisk pace. Artemis didn’t see her coming nor did the other girl. But Delphi was close enough to see that girl say something to Artemis and the human looked uncomfortable but smiled politely. Delphi’s power walk turned into a jog.

Next thing she knew she angled her shoulder between them and successfully forced the other girl away from Arty a few paces. While Delphi curled an arm around Artemis’ and linked their hands. Lacing her fingers with Artemis’. She didn’t even have a chance to think about how natural that felt before she met the eyes of her greatest regret.

Rose widened her eyes in surprise. But then a silky smile spread across her features. It made delphi’s stomach turn with anxiety.

“Del? Is that you?” Her voice was light. Not a single trace of warmth or kindness she’d used that night. “It’s so good to see you again.”

Delphi couldn’t bring herself to speak yet. Only responding with a small mmm. Before she looked to Artemis.

Her face was alight with a blush and Delphi caught her glancing at their hands more than once before she was able to focus on Delphi. Once she did her brow creased with concern at the barely hidden distress on Delphi’s face. Delphi smiled at her concern.

“Hey, uh, I saw you and I thought I’d join you.”

Artemis nodded. “Yeah. Yeah. That’s awesome. I’d love to have you along. Seems like you two.. Know each other?”

Rose didn’t give Delphi a chance to reply. “Oh we go way back. We met one night at a bar. It was a magical night. Wasn’t it?”

Delphi didn’t reply. Simply kept walking forward. She didn’t know what to do. At that moment Artemis’ hand squeezed hers. As if in comfort. A single glance at her friend showed that Artemis could tell something was wrong.

“Lets continue on the tour.” She said with a smile.

And so it continued. Together. Hand in hand. Artemis and Delphi showed this not so new rider around the village. Not once was another thing about the past brought up and to Delphi’s satisfaction. It seemed that Rose couldn’t wait to get away from them either. Knowing that the objet of her flirting had been claimed by Delphi. She was eager to move on.

So, sometime later the two Friends stood together, watching Rose stalk away with a flick of her hair and a fake smile of farewell.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Artemis asked.

Delphi looked at her feet. “Maybe one day but not today.”

“Okay. Thanks for your help this aftermoon.”

“My pleasure.”

Even during the tour and now standing together in the sun. Their hands hadn’t unclasped once.
