Joyride is the one who got to say behind. It's amazing when you look at all of them, you can see how a persons work is reflected over time, and by the quality of the prep-work on a pelt. The better the pelt, the better the outcome... for the most part.
And thanks again my dead-dear friend.

When you take one of your Fur Babies out with you, do you just carry them in your arms? Or do you use one of those pet carriers that you strap on like a forward- facing back pack (I think they are called 'snugglies')?

Good afternoon dear lady!
I straight up carry 'em out in the open, in my arms. Unless it's my raccoon Sooner or one of my mink, who pokes their head out of my messenger bag, and 'frightens' people who don't initially see them. That's not to say that I don't feel slightly embarrassed about what I am doing, so it's not like I'm flaunting them about, but my love for them and the confidence I have in my own work, is that I'm ready to be confronted with both the positive and negative comments of those who take the time to talk to me. I have noticed that (here in TN) if I have a coyote, people are straight up THRILLED to see it. People around here are convinced that the coyote is the "southern wolf" so to speak, and that every last coyote is out to kill their pets, chickens and stroll off with small children. LOL 50% ignorance. And people want to TOUCH like crazy while they say "What a wonderful thing you've done with the pelt! I/____ shoot them when ever I/we see them. I'll/___ have to save their pelts! I had no idea there was a market for their fur!!! This is REALLY cool!"
When I have Phil (a ranched silver) out, people are far more stand-off-ish, think he a dog, but still want to touch and hold, and the most common comment is "I didn't know they existed... a black red huh?!" But also comment on his beauty and fur, and wanna know more about the "soft mount" than the pelt.
When I have windy out... he stops traffic. Sometimes quite literally. People will often stop and stare and a small flock of onlookers forms. Each one with wide eyes and zipped lips. I recall such an instance here, beneath this image of windy.
For example, this past Monday when I took him to a rather public area covered in wildflowers, (unfortunately forgetting my camera, so I was using my phone) surrounded on 2 sides by rather busy roads, one being a HW; Two vehicles stopped, pulled over, and took pix and video of me with Windy as I took pix of him! One black pickup with 2 middle aged men actually tracked me down and had to ask me, "What's wrong with that fox?" One man was delighted with the idea of Windy being a soft mount after I answered a few of their questions, and begged to hold him."Oh, he's.... heavy! I love this!"
Everyone and their uncle knows a red fox when they see one. Everyone wants to know WHY I have a "pet" red fox. And it seems to be common knowledge that you can NOT have a red fox as a pet in TN, and people will say it with a scolding tone -from a safe distance- AND then/OR "remind me" when ground trapping season is - as if to let me know "NOW is NOT that time." LOL Windy gets peoples panties in a bunch most of all because he is "the common red." People seem to LOVE foxes, Some people are against fur, disgusted by it, angered by it, and he excites far more "Anti's" in people than any of my other pelts. It's very interesting "data." But when they find out he's a soft mount, they thing HE is dirty, and don't really want to touch him. ??? That aspect is odd and confirms ignorance about pelts, species, tanning and taxidermy in general.
How's that for a long winded answer?! LOL

Oh, your reply reminded me of something I meant to share with you. In Indiana it is legal to own foxes. In fact, there is a breeder in the Indianapolis area (about 3 hours South of me) who breeds them to sell them as pets. The place is called 'Tiny Tracks' and they seem to be reputable and care about their fox's well being. I am seriously thinking of adopting one when my two guys (Taffy and Eddy) pass on. I would give it more serious thought and thoroughly investigate the reality of fox ownership before committing to it, however. I think part of what happens when some people see your foxes is that though they may be morally opposed to the idea, they feel conflicted because another part of them REALLY wants one too! If someone really seemed to be threatening you, and you perceived violence in the air, you could always work up some 'crocodile tears' and say that this was your beloved pet you saved from death years ago, and you had him/her mounted for sentimental reasons.

Tiny Tracks is "Breader A!" He also sells some as pets.
LOL... So far, no one's been that bad, that is a GREAT go to plan!!!

OMG! He breeds them for the Fur Trade too? I am shocked! You do know that I meant that I was thinking of adopting one AS A PET don't you? He has you pick them up at 4 weeks of age so they'll bond to you. Holt Crap Batman!

And if I am correct, the pups are only available in the early spring?
This is one of the people with one of his pups. (2 years old now?)

cool, and you have done that all by yourself?
Have you special head forms? Or have you learned it somewhere?
I often try things like that too, when I get a new pelt, but it really is not so easy. I have to make the head forms because here in Germany we don´t have any taxidermy shops.

AtFirstPlush In reply to PeedexYoa [2011-12-04 15:12:54 +0000 UTC]
I have hand carved a total of two large ones so far, (hand made all the ones for my ermine) but in the U.S. there are several sources to purchase taxidermy items from. I learned by simply doing, and by doing a great deal of research. I have no formal taxidermy education, and I oly use pelts that I have purchased already processed. I have yet to work on anything raw.

PeedexYoa In reply to AtFirstPlush [2011-12-04 19:04:00 +0000 UTC]
Wow, that´s interesting!
I also made some mounted things, mostly plushed or soft mounts and mostly foxes.
I have made a mink too and an ermine, those little things are not so difficult and they don´t need so much supplies.
I would like to make a real good head for my christmas present- an arctic marble fox. I don´t want to get it weird looking XD
So I have to make it good. I don´t know how people just make it with the corner of the lips where the lower lip and the upper just get togather there always is a knit which looks kinda ugly.
I´m always asking myself where others have put it, because it is not seen on a ready mounted head.

AtFirstPlush In reply to PeedexYoa [2011-12-05 01:40:57 +0000 UTC]
I don't think they get that the lips and jawlines are stretched, so you need to compensate and make the groove in the forms mouth large enuff at the corners to accept all of the stretched area, and they almost never seem to fill in the lipline with clay whick helps plump and fill in the area so it isn't 'extended' into the cheek area.

PeedexYoa In reply to AtFirstPlush [2011-12-05 11:55:42 +0000 UTC]
ok, yeah I have seen a fox head form for taxidermy, there the lip on the cheeks is that way that it can match I think.
I never tried, but for my next mounted head, I will make a form out of papermachee so I can form it more exactly then just with knitted newspaper and tape XD

- I 'may' be selling the red, Ellsworth by the end of the summer. It all depends upon another smaller red I'll be getting and completeing by then. I have quite a few, as you can see, and that doesn't include 3 coyotes, and a skunk! lol
So I may be thinning out my own collection in about 6 months. So, just in case - you has a heads up.

Six months or even the end of summer might be fine.
I don't have a job, but I'm applying where I did a FABULOUS job of my work experience so I think I'll get it within 2 weeks
Can I see the rest of the reds body?
If I like it, I put dibs on it xD

I don't know whether to be disturbed or not xD
Nah, kidding.
But I don't know about having a fox "fully" intact.
Would customs let him into Australia with those 'parts?'

Sorry to butt-in but customs has been known for nabbing bizarre things, so I'd be careful... I used to be in a furry community and there were reports of several thousand dollar fursuits being held-up or destroyed because they were deemed "objectionable" by customs.
