No, it was more 'disturbing' than painful. On the pain chart it was a 2 the whole time. It concerned me that I thought it should have hurt more, and never did. It's almost healed shut now. And a gently stubbed toe would be a 10 lol. Thank you for your comment btw. I've been meaning to get back to you for a while. So sorry for the delay.

wow o.o kudos on surviving that. Was the sharpness of the can to attribute to the low number on the pain scale?

LOL, thank you. And so sorry for the late reply. Actually, 2/3 of the wound was due to force. The can lid was bent down and I drove my finger under that, so it was actually only a partial cut, the rest was a tear. I don't know why it didn't hurt. The surgeon suggested it was because I severed nerves. It took several days for the feeling to come back 90% to that top of part of my hand. It happened so quickly. It actually concerned me that it didn't hurt a lot more... but I suppose it's kind of a good thing.

Oh my goodness x.x the tearing eehhhhhh *fetal position* It makes sense...I cut a section off my thumb once (when I was in my "razor blades are cool" phase and I was trying to get one from an old shaving razor by using a nail clipper to clip away the plastic... it was very dumb). It shaved a good layer or two off my thumb and I didn't realize it until I saw the blood and the air got to the wound. Then it sucked!
My neighbor completely severed his thumb off once while working with a table saw. My mom's bf at the time heard him cussing up a storm and went to investigate, saw him, saw the blood, grabbed the glove with the thumb in it and rushed him to the hospital...now his thumb looks like a toe
Do you have any feeling yet?

LOL< tell me about it. I should have won a "STUPID!" award for that one. lol And I am always happy it isn't worse. My fathers advice, "Did it feel good? Don't do it again."
Well, the stitches are out, and now I have a "sexy" 'Frankenfinger." I'm still working on getting it to bend again after so long. It's pretty well closed up however, and we tossed out our old can opener and got a new one. Be it a manual, but far better then the first. ;D I don't like man-eating cans.
btw, if you ever get any small critters, like rabbit, hair, squirrel, or pest by accident that you'd otherwise leave off of dA, let me know. I like the smaller beasts.

I found this too interesting. xD Maybe it's because I want to be a veterinarian haha. That's quite a bad laceration ya got there. o_o The worst I've ever gotten is a toenail broken off when I was 8 xD To this day it grows with a crack down the center lol.

I don't like this stuff when it's ME or a part of me...lol, but I can look at just about anyone elses injuries. I wanted to be a vet, but I didn't like the idea of having to put animals down, or what had to be done in school in order to learn. /:-| I just couldn't get past it.

I can totally relate dude, haha. About the injuries being part of me thing. I don't look forward to the sad parts at all myself actually. And yeah, the schooling is tough, I've read into it and all. But I've always wanted to since I knew what a vet was as a little girly. Call it a dream job, heh.

Dang what a slash you got!
When I was 8, I wanted to feed the puppies canned wet dog food and could not open it so I started to stab a knife in the top and I ended up stabbing it through my finger lol.
Then last year I simply dropped an exacto blade while sitting on the couch (I was working on an art project) and the entire blade part of that knife stabbed into my thigh and I super glued my skin together along with those "skin tapes" that don't hold worth a crap. So for a couple weeks, if I ran too hard or something, it would pop back open. But the poor care to it, the constant open and re closing made it a hideous purple scar lol.

Even in all my years being reckless with an X-Atco I'm happy to say I've never damaged my hands!
HOWEVER once when I was probably around 10 years old, I was playing tag with my cousins and tripped. I ended up grinding my knee against the floor vent (you know that heat/cold air comes from in central air homes.) The little wheel that turned the blades happened to be serrated like a saw, and cut right through my knee to the bone. When we got to the ER they told us my leg would require stitches of course, but also that they were out of pain meds!Β So my mom had to hold me down while they sewed my leg shut without any medication to numb it. Metal.

ArtificiallyMe In reply to AtFirstPlush [2014-01-05 03:28:45 +0000 UTC]
lol nope no hospital visit.Β I popped it out because I landed on it weird, I distinctly remember the feeling of it stressing at the joint then popping out of place. My entire leg went hot then waves of the tingling feeling you get when a limb falls asleep went through it, then it just started to burn. I was at my neighbors house at the time, so I had to WALK back to my house with my leg dislocated. While I walked I felt it pop back into place but it still hurt quite a bit. By the time I got home the pain was so bad I had to crawl up the porch steps and drag myself into the house. The kicker is my parents thought I was exaggerating and that I had probably just fallen when I told them 'I dislocated my leg!' haha. Now I have some slight nerve damage in my right thigh down to my groin area because of it. Ahh good times lol

Heh well now I have semi-permanent nerve damage in my right leg, my leg was numb completely but I began stretching it to alleviate a 'catch' I would experience in my hip area when I stood up wrong. Some of the feeling has come back but not all, and it still catches occasionally. I feel like an 80 year old when I stand up then double over all like 'My hip!!'Β

That is impressive! I managed to cut the hell out of my thumb once being an idiot whilst removing the lid of a soup can...instead of grabbing it properly I grabbed it on the edge to try to pull it off and yeah...sliced my thumb open...didn't need stitches though but have a nifty little scar lol

I feel your pain, I really do. Just over 3 years ago I managed to slam my left thumb into the edge of a can like that, just above the lower joint, and completely severed the flexor tendon. Considering another surgery now to excise the scar tissue from the repair. XD what did they tell you with regards to bending your finger?
π: 0 β©: 1
AtFirstPlush In reply to BloodyMary-x [2014-01-04 16:44:10 +0000 UTC]
Thank you!
OH GOD!!!! I am so soooo sorry about ur thumb. If u get another surgery, I hope it works. That must have been very scary, not to mention quite painful!?!
They told me not too bend it, and to keep the splint on 'till I get the stitches out on the 12th... I change the bandages 2x's a day, and wiggle the hurt finger, but never really bending it... because I can feel the stitches pulling, and a 'click' in the finger that radiates a tiny amount of pain. So, I don't try to do much with it. But since I have to use the finger next to it to stabilize it & the splint, (as basically a reminder) both are pretty stiff. I do give the second finger a work out while the bandage is off for a few mins, but that stupid small cut above that finger hurts like a cardboard paper-cut, and is taking it's time healing. > If anything hurts, it's that dang insignificant cut. lol

BloodyMary-x In reply to AtFirstPlush [2014-01-07 02:02:25 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, the initial injury wasn't quite so painful, but when I had it stitched up at the clinic, they didn't pick up on the fact that the tendon was gone (and no one quite believed me that I said I saw the bone before the blood started welling up), so I went 5 days like that before I realized how little I could bend it, and my mom finally had me try and push on her hand and we realized "oh look I am entirely incapable of exerting any amount of pressure"... there was so much scar tissue that I still have very little range in the top joint and the pain from the resistance makes it nearly impossible to play guitar for an extended period, not to mention using game controllers or trying to do any sort of meticulous work (particularly since the second opinion I got recently called to my attention that I did in fact sustain some minor nerve damage that's affected my ability to use tactile recognition/have general spatial awareness (like reaching blind for your keys in your pocket and being able to identify them) when touching things with the outer left side and holding small objects; they tend to fall/flip out of my hands every now and again because although I didn't lose feeling per se, I'm lacking some aspects of it). Anyway, that entire novel to say that the best advice I can give is once you're able to move it, KEEP IT MOVING AS MUCH AS YOU CAN, hah. Scars like to build up and joints like to get stuck; path of least resistance in healing.
Another thing I highly recommend looking into is an opener that doesn't leave sharp edges, neither on the rim of the can nor the edge of the lid. Why these aren't the standard is entirely beyond me, but since that incident it's what I use, and it works wonderfully.

AtFirstPlush In reply to BloodyMary-x [2014-01-23 12:57:28 +0000 UTC]
Thank you so much for the advice! I actually picked up my guitar as part of my 'physical therapy.' It is a bit of a strain because my finger is stiff and the grip isn't back yet, and doesn't articulate as well yet because it's still quite swollen. I am an avid finger picker, and don't use a pick unless doing chords or rhythm, but if I want to be able to play, I need to exercise the finger.
We did toss out the old can opener. When we thought about it, we've had it for 18 YEARS! So we recycled it and got a new one. No more funky can edges, or prying the lids off any more. lol
Man, I am so sorry about what happened to your hand. I feel awful for you. I hope that you can have something done to help. And not having the sensation of touch must be quite frustrating. I really feel for you.
p.s. your quite well spoken. It was a joy to read what you wrote actually. It was very fluent and easy to read, and I totally 'heard' your feeling. Do you write? - I know, and out of place comment, but I took notice of it right away.
