The reason is that they don't HAVE to give you their affection -- so when they do, it really means something!
I have an orange cat (16 years old!) who has totally adopted me. He comes out and greets me when I come home from work, regularly comes to cuddle, and spends his time watching for me in the front window when I am gone for a few days. And his purr is loud enough to rattle your teeth!

is a bit to much to expect
(BTW, those two: cat-owner and hi pet.. er... different-species-roommate , are marvelous done. Somehow I just feel those two would surely meet in the real life
