Description
This is my favourite background character introduced in the Season 1 finale of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I'm not sure what it is about her, but I really like her design and colours... I guess maybe because we really don't see very many conservatively-coloured female ponies on the show (aside from Pinkie's mother and sisters, anyway).I'm not the only one either, apparently, since the fandom quickly came up with a name for her (Octavia). I felt she deserved a nice, high-res wallpaper on here, though, so I decided to vector one. I played around with the shading a bit on her Cello and the background.
She's definitely the classiest-looking Pony I've seen on the show to date.

Another interesting thing about her is that she is probubly one of few ponies that stands on her/his hind legs for more than a second.

I recall hearing on a forum that she's actually Pinkie Pie's sister, since she looks like one of PP's sisters from her flashback in Cutie Mark Chronicles.

I had never really described any of the characters in MLP as pretty, at least not without putting in some kinds of qualifiers like "Oh, what a cute pony" or something like that.
So imagine how awkward I feel when I see Octavia and the same mysterious air of class and sophistication that many noticed manages to catch my attention.
Confound these ponies, they make me feel VERY confused at times. I'm sure I'd feel better if someone drew her as a human...

lol, I know exactly how you feel... although I think I've probably called Fluttershy pretty at some point before this episode. With main characters, though, you can at least attribute it at least partially to their personalities; which are basically human personalities.
There was definitely something about Octavia that drew in a lot of fans, though; even though she was only on screen for 30 seconds at most, and had no dialogue. Her rather unique coloring for a female pony is one of the more obvious things that separates her from the pack. However, after examining her design a little more closely both during and after the creation of this wallpaper, I do think that one of the more subtle differences between her and other background pony designs are her eyebrows and eyelashes. They seem a bit thicker than usual, and I think it adds to her aura of mystique and sophistication. They make her face look a bit more elegant.

Very nice. I really like the combination of her conservative color and her pink bow, pink cutie mark and purple eyes, makes her visually interesting without being 'loud'.

hmmm. Her instrument looks big enough to be a double bass, but it sounded more like a cello.
Confound these ponies! They drive me to ponder over the legitimacy of their musical instruments!

The pegbox also more closely resembles that of a cello. The double bass is a bit unique compared to the other instruments in its family in that respect.

She *did* really stand out. She was the only symph-pony (slain for awful pun) whom I could recollect after the episode ended. For some reason, Spike on a honky-tonk piano in Appleloosa stood out *far* more than the gentlecolt who played at the Gala. But then, he's Spike. That's yer reason~

Yeah, I went mostly by the depiction of the tuning pegs which, afaik, are usually designed a bit differently on a Double Bass. Though I assumed a Double Bass would also be even larger in comparison to Octavia; and the Cello is probably already pushing it as is, lol.

In comparison to the size of the piano, it's closer to a Cello anyway. The tuning pegs on a double bass are not the same as in the other string instruments, you're correct. Instead of wooden pegs they are machine heads designed for fine-tuning rather than rough tuning. (Violins, Violas and Cellos have fine-tuners on the tailpiece instead)
