Finally. Finally. Finally. Today Priscilla manifested her foxflame for the first time. It was a white foxflame, as pure as the first snow - as most definitive mark of a pure and innocent soul as can be. In other words, it is everything I could have hoped for and more. The fields I have dealt in thus far have never been those of random chance, nor have I prayed on the Sun or Moon or a higher power to make my wishes come true… but I can only see this as a sign that my experiments will bear fruit in the end.
Even if I were to be less optimistic, Priscilla will certainly be a far easier subject to work with than Valeria. That girl’s strength is certainly admirable, but considering what I have in mind for the Imbuement spell, she would have proved far too stubborn a material to work with. Even her sister would have been preferable, considering her loyalty and devotion towards me - but Dahlia was simply not strong enough. Her strength lies in Concealment… but what use is there for concealing a spell that doesn't even work? Priscilla will be perfect for my needs, without a doubt.
As a mother, as a grandmother, is this the right thing for me to do? – this is not the first time that thought has crossed my mind, ever since I embarked on this journey years ago. How many people have sought immortality since the dawn of humanity - or indeed the dawn of us kitsune? The name of the one who succeeded would live on forever… as would they. What person wouldn't want to leave their mark on history, especially for something as momentous as this?
But I digress - tomorrow is Priscilla’s first lesson, and I must prepare-
Creeeeeeeeeeak. My heart stopped. Only then did I finally remember where I actually was - just a foot away from Mother, who even if she couldn't hear me, could open her eyes and catch me at any moment. And… my spell had run out. Maybe I could reform it…? I shut my eyes and focused, my heart hammering in my chest like a drill, but it just… didn't happen. It wasn't worth it pushing my luck, I decided. I'd already gotten what I needed.
Back went the notebook into the drawer and I slowly stood up, eyes fixed on Mother's sleeping form for any hint of wakefulness. But she didn't move, nor did the rhythmic rising and falling of her chest see any interruption. One step backwards, then another, then another… I paused at the top of the staircase, dreading the way downwards. There was no way, no way at all that she wouldn't be able to hear me! No, calm down…
I shut my eyes for a moment, then opened them up again, turning my head to peer into Mother's study. More specifically, at the table where I had spent so many hours tinkering away at whatever problem Mother had set me… and the small window that hung slightly ajar right above it. It wasn't a good idea, but it was better than anything else I had.
"No… this was a terrible idea!" My arms burned and my legs shook, scrabbling for purchase but finding none as I hung from the second floor's windowsill, not daring to look down at all. When climbing that staircase every day I had never realized how tall it was… and now I was paying for my hubris. I looked down at the grass, and immediately regretted my decision. It was just grass… surely it would cushion my fall, right? At least I hoped it would, considering my arms were beginning to cramp.
"...Here goes nothing." Wind whooshed past me for a single horrifying moment - then I landed on the grass with nothing more than a small phew of relief. "Hey, it wasn't even that high up anyway!" Giving the second floor window a rueful glance, I dusted myself off and began to jog across the grass back to the main house. All the while a little something pulsed in my chest - a small thrill of excitement, but also a tinge of fear. I now knew what Mother was willing to do - and probably perfectly capable of doing. I had to fight back with whatever I had, I knew that very well. But how…?
