Description
AS WITH ALL MY WORK, THIS IS NOT A STOCK IMAGE.This was a commission piece. I created this image with Illustrator. A person out of nowhere contacted me asking about my pricing and that they wanted me to design a logo. One of the things that I always do when starting a project from scratch is do a bit of research. I look for inspiration and I look for advice because I might find some that I've never ran into before and it might save me some headaches moving forward. This particular client already had a basic idea. They liked the color blue because it was reserved and it got respect. They also liked the idea of birds in the Logo because FHC stands for "Flying Higher Coaching". She showed me some logos that are out for her, and anyone else, to freely take and use, but she stressed that she wanted something that was unique and that other people didn't have.
After about an hour's worth of research and thinking of all sorts of things and logos that I've found interesting I remembered something very specific. I remembered watching "The Scarlet Pimpernel" and Percy writes a letter and wraps it in an old envelope and he seals the envelope shut with melted wax because envelopes didn't have any adhesive or glue back then. Often times people would have a ring with a negative low relief imprint of their family seal on a ring, that way they could press their ring against the melted wax and it makes a low relief wax sculpture of their family crest.
I thought that would fit well for her but I also showed her a few other ideas. She showed the most interest in the seal concept. So I went ahead and made the logo and used an image as a reference to draw out the bird. She liked everything but she wanted the bird a little bigger and wanted a few things changed such as the font -- which is understandable. Matching a font with a logo is no easy task. My first stab at the project was trying to make a realistic seal. But it became clear that it's not a seal, in the end it's a logo that's supposed to have the seal as inspiration and bring the old fashioned seals to mind. So I went through a few different renditions for her. In the end, a real seal wouldn't have a discolored bird or have the bird outside the outer circles, but again -- it's a logo not a seal.
She wanted me to change the shape of the wings and the wing span and I feel as though the breed of bird changed after the third stab at getting the logo to look right for her -- so I can't tell you what kind of bird it is anymore but in the end she was happy and that's what matters... because it's not a bird, it's a logo that's supposed to bring a bird to mind.
I'm really happy with this piece.
