I remember how my mother told me about this ritual, this tradition. Ever since I was a little fawn, I was eager to prove myself. But my father always told me, to not act stupid. It was not what our mother wants us to be...stupid. We need to be strong and wise. So I trained day after day. I took long walks with my father, learned to walk fast and agile. My feet my don’t look strong, they are thin and long, but I trained for years. My mother on the other hand was the one who taught me about herbs and magic. I know where to find poison plants and I know how to use them to my advantage. She teached me how to compensate my weak body with knowledge. My hooves are dipped in poison, my horn is sharpened. And my most important ability, my magic. Since I discovered how to use it, I constantly improved my possibilities.

Today was the day, I was ready. I waited till winter, longer than some of the fawns with the same age for my coming-of-age ritual. But I rather wait some more time, than make a huge mistake. This could mean death here, and I can’t honor our great mother when I’m dead.
I prepared everything, I collected enough poison as well as plants for healing. Today I will bring great honor to my family. For the last couple of days I spotted a young wolf lurking around my mother’s den. He will die today, at my hoof.
He is probably searching for a nice area to hunt, maybe he want to form a new pack. He is stupid. Stupid enough to think he could challenge us. Didn’t his parents told him that we from Blackwood are the strongest of all Fawnlings. If our herd, our family is in danger, we fight.

The snow last night hid the wolf's footsteps. But I don’t expect him to be far away. The fresh snow was soft but not too deep. Everything looked the same. Endless white and black forests. I checked the place where I saw the wolf the last time. Near some stones, which he presumably used as hideout. I found some of it’s hide, but he wasn’t there and it didn’t looked like he spend the night here. He must be somewhere else. There is a river near by, where he could be, or he is hunting something. I am on my way to the river first. The water is usually frozen, especially after such a cold night. But with the right tools it is easy to break the ice. I don’t know if wolves are intelligent enough to use tools, or if they have another method to reach the fresh water.
He wasn’t at the river, sadly, but I found some footsteps. From a wolf, he was here. Now it will be easy to find the dangerous animal. The snow gnashes beneath every step, even if I tried to walk silently. He would hear me, but I don’t want to attack him from behind.
Finally I spotted him, between some trees. His dark fur perfectly matched into the environment. He was hidden in front of the dark trees.
He heard me, his ears pinned back, his teeth sharp and snarling. I can see that he was only a young wolf, maybe just a weaned pup. But either way, he was a wolf, in our territory, and he is dangerous, regardless if young or old.
I’m ready.
