Description I had this wonderful old pair of cargo pants. And when they started to get some rather unsightly holes in the region of the knees, I knew it wouldn't be long before my mother begged me to stop wearing them in public. But I couldn't just toss them. They'd been too useful to me. So I decided to make a backpack out of them. I mean, what better use for all those pockets.

I was going to make a tutorial for these, but I kind of forgot to take pictures because I got really caught up in the project. I cut the bottom half of each pant leg off right above the knees. Then I unpicked the inside seams on the top part and resewed them to create a tube shape. I then used the leftover pant legs to create a rectangular bottom. The pants themselves had this really awesome lining already, so I was able to use that and create an easy lining for the bag as well. I used the rest of the pant legs to then create straps. Hoo, boy. Stuffing those straps took forever, but they were so worth it. They're the comfiest straps I've ever had the pleasure of setting upon my bony little shoulders. Anyways, as soon as I sewed the straps on, that was pretty much it. It was way simpler than I thought it would be. The pants themselves already had a drawstring so I didn't have to worry about figuring out a way to close it or anything. I think they turned out pretty awesome, and I might just end up using them for some possibly steampunk themed project in the near future.

Thats just... epic!

I have loads of saggy military style pants laying around that i never manage to use.
Turning them into shorts just doesn't work on our longitude -_-

Thanks! It's too bad about your pants. Over time I've learned not to throw just about anything away anymore.

You're quite welcome~ Well, I gave them to a goodwill-type organization so perhaps someone can put them to use (maybe like your awesome creation)~

That's such a great save! The straps are really nice, and the drawstring is a nice closure.

I've got a pair I've been itching to do a rescue on, nothing with that many pockets should have to go to waste just because of worn seams

Thank you! It's becoming hard for me to throw just about anything away because then I start thinking about all the things I could re-purpose it for.

Yeah, I used to make bags out of denim until I destroyed my wrists, but still have a bit of a hoarding problem

It really just takes practice. And it certainly helps having a mom who knows a lot about sewing.

My mom generally doesn't either, except when I ask her to help me do things like make a pants pattern. She's so great like that.
