I always use a reference as a base point. I can't just--draw. It's much easier to look and copy, in a sense. Like Eulam was for you, portraits are for me. The imaginative work is more or less already done.

It's like direct observation. It's right there and I can look and go, "Do I want this here? Uh...sure. Yeah. That looks okay." and if I don't want it, I can ignore it. Now, I'm talking about portraits specifically, not regular art. Pictures of fictional characters, like my One Piece collection thing, are taken from a bunch of pictures of people of their cannon nationality, and I use them as references. Luffy's picture was taken from about six references alone.
