Introduction
In this article, I'll be showing you the in's and out's of a completed drawing done in Photoshop, featuring my own character Seishi. I'll be giving you tips on sketching proportions, lining and detailing, as well as shading skin, hair, eyes and clothing.
Sketching and Lining
Porportions
When sketching proportions it's a good idea to considder the placement of area's with others, such as lining the top of the ears with the eyes, the bottom of the ears with the nose, and the mouth with the jaw line.
Colouring the Lineart
Colouring the lineart helps make the lineart look less blocky and blend into the artwork more without taking it away completely.
Base Colours
Before anything else can happen, the base colours have to be laid down. They'll look a little odd flat, but that'll change.
Shading the Skin
The following colours used are those most suited to my character, so feel free to change them up to suit your drawing. Although I would stick to pink or purple for shading, as this colour blends the best.
Shading Hair
The shading colour for the hair can vary, for darker hair colours such as black I usually change the black hair to be slightly lighter and use a black shading colour. For hair like this character, I use a darker pigment of the base hair colour, and for white hair I use either purple or pink.
Highlights and Detailing
Although these may seem insignificant, small details can make a big difference. These Details will add another more lifelike feature to the character and will make the eyes stand out.
Shading the Eyes
One again, the colour will vary between characters but I almost always use purple to shade, or sometimes red depending on the feel I'm going for the drawing.
Shading the Shirt
When shading the shirt, it's important to think of the placement of the creases and not making the shirt too crowded or too sparse with them.
Shading the Vest and Jacket
Like I mention in the pictures, It's important not to shade with black unless the subject you're colouring is very dark. Although you can use lighter colours to shade in this case, I wanted to keep the area a dark one so I used black as a shade.
Finishing Touches
Lightening the Lineart
By lightening the lineart, you can distinguish heavier areas and lighter areas in the lineart. Areas such as features of the face, creases of the shirt and areas on the neck shouldn't stand out heavily, so I dull it a bit by going over them with a light soft eraser
At this stage you're at the end of the drawing process! You can decide whether to add a background of somesort, leave the canvas background blank, or add other deatils to complete your piece.
