Description
For love of hammer-ing time,drumming monotonous piece
by wretched piece;
never a moment of peace found
in the wood that keeps her life
in the chains of the slain,
her five-cent sweat-shop
market-ing her only hope
in the dream of freedom
for mother and child;
wishing upon a star (or five)
her heart spreads over oceans-wide,
with toy trains and craft baskets
through America's boys and girls
who seek other riches
in diminished hearts
lessened (but not damned)
by trivial novelties
and play-things alike.
Paper and metal shuffle in the pockets
of a father, his heart
burning holes for love of the dollar;
the love of a son
who breaks the chains
around a hero-doll
not knowing who the real villain is;
tears shed not for the broken
a toy as meaningless
as a father's promises
but for a girl in his dreams
so far away from the world he knows
he wishes at night, upon stars and over oceans,
he may touch the dirt upon her face…
The world ends and begins
a thousand times
and a thousand more
in dark-light blurs unnoticed
except in the hearts
of a boy and girl
no longer such, apart, alone
no more, forever.
