Chp. 2: Bill’s Hurt

Why the hell is my dad throwing me a party?! He hates me! Why is he inviting my old friends over?!

Whatever… I’ll wear that black and purple gown that I bought a week ago.

My thoughts go back to Tom… Whenever I try to talk to him, he only says that he’s busy and can’t hang out later. Whatever, I get the hint.

I pull on the gown and get my black heels out to wear. I slip them on and do my make-up and head downstairs.

Everyone gasps as they see me; since I must look stupid.

Let’s see who’s here… Raven, Alexander, Sally, Jack, Mary, Jason and… Tom…

Why is he here?

“Hey Bill, look at you! You look great!” I turn to smile at Raven, who’s hanging onto Alexander’s arm and smiling broadly. I smile at them both and move on.

After I talk to everyone, Tom’s the only one left. I go over to him and he smiles at me.

“I missed you, Bill.” He tells me, his eyes are shining. I look at him and reach out to touch his cheek.

“I missed you too, Tom. I-I…” He silences me with a finger against my lips and shakes his head. He moves away from me and sighs.

“Don’t say it Bill. I-I just can’t…” He looks away from me and then back at me. I hope he sees my tears. He sighs again and goes to hold me.

I let him.

I feel him kiss my hair and he whispers to me: “I’ve missed you so much. I love you. Always.” I feel his tears against my neck and slipped something into my hand.

He pulled away and kissed my lips before muttering that he had to leave.

I’m up in my room now, the party’s over.

Tom gave me a ring; an engagement ring. It was beautiful, silver, with blue gems. Placed it on my computer desk and went to my bathroom to shower.

I hurry it up, and get out and dry off. I pull on some underwear and take the ring off the desk and slip it onto my left ring finger. A perfect fit.

I’m 20 years old, and I find it hard to let go of my feelings of anger for everything that’s happened.

I sniffle and look at the clock; it’s almost midnight. I guess I should go to bed and sleep.

That’s what I do.

And I dream of Tom too.

I wake up in the morning and decide that maybe I should… get a job…

I can’t live at home forever, and if I do, my dad will just start to charge me rent. I get up and get on my computer and look for some jobs.

About fifteen minutes later, I’ve applied to work at a small diner near my old high school. I pull on a black shirt and some black track pants and go downstairs.

Dad’s there, reading his paper.

“Hey Bill, Tom came by and asked me to give you this.” I eye him strangely and take the box and open it.

It’s a silver and red bloody rose necklace.

I smile and put it around my neck and look at my dad, who’s just smiling at me.

Maybe he’s changed.

I go to the mall and what do you know, I see Tom there with Dina.

They’re at the jewelry shop, looking at rings. I feel my heart drop and I turn around and go into the nearest Hot Topic I could find.

I decide to buy some hair ties, which are neon in color.

While I’m perusing the jewelry, I see Tom and Dina enter the store.

“Come on Tom! They have awesome shoes!” I hear her say. I scoff and go back to looking at the jewelry. I hear a cough and I see Tom looking my way.

He looks sad, but when he sees me looking at him, he gives me a smile. I don’t smile back and I just go back to the jewelry and pick up a wristband with bullet studs.

“Huh, is that Bill?” Dina’s perceptive for a bimbo.

I go and pay for my purchases and leave the store without looking back.

I’m hurt. Really badly.

Why were they looking at rings? Are they… going to get married?

What about the ring and necklace Tom gave to me? What do I do about this?!
