Description
I've been meaning to do this type of fan art for ages now but I didn't get the chance until this past weekend.Back in the good ol' days when I played board games (heck, they still are fun) I liked Clue a lot. There are many different versions of Clue (1st game came out in 1949). It was originally a British game but got adopted into the USA & then so on. There are also many different versions of the characters.
"The game is set in a mansion, with the board divided into different rooms. The players each represent a character who is a guest staying at this house, whose owner, Dr. Black (Mr. Boddy in the North American version), has been found murdered. Players attempt to solve the murder. The solution to the murder requires the three components of Suspect, Weapon, and Room." - Cited from a Clue game site, for those of you unfamiliar with the game.
For some reason I vision the characters in 1920's clothing. To make this picture actually took a lot of research. I'm sure the 1920's style of clothing in my artwork isn't 100% accurate but who cares? This is ART, not history.
*Info on Characters & Why I Drew Them The Way I Did*
Colonel Mustard (top left) is often described as a man who had experience in the Punjab. But that time (when the British first went to Punjab) was in the late 1840's, so I don't know where the creators got that idea for Mustard, because if that were so, then he'd be over 100 years old!
Miss Peacock (top right) is either the mother or stepmother of Miss Scarlet. I know that those 1920's hats the women wore probably didn't have peacock feathers in them but hey...artistic licensing here!
Mr. Green (middle left) is sometimes a "Reverand" or he is often described as a money-loving man. I wanted him to look a little 1920's "gangster". Men's clothing in the 1920's is less complicated than the womens' style, because mens' style is mostly suits. (I think men should wear suits today!) I was almost going to give him a F. Scott Fitzgerald hairstyle but then I realized he'd look too scary with that hair!
Miss Scarlet (middle right) is the daughter or stepdaughter of Miss Peacock. She is described as an aspiring actress. I wanted to give her the flapper style, which a lot of young women got into during the 1920's. Darn, that women's 1920's wave hairstyle is hard for me to draw for some reason.
Professor Plum (bottom left) is just that...a professor. I made him more middle-aged than some older weird professor. I totally laughed when I coloured in his suit because he looks pretty gangster too.
Mrs. White (bottom right) is the maid of Mr. Black/Boddy. She is often described as elderly but I'm not good at drawing older people, so I made her a bit younger than I should have. Do you know how hard it is to find an 1920's maid outfit? It really is! All I came up with is the sleazy "French maid" costumes but they were not 1920's! Finally on one site, there was an actual picture of a 1928 catalog that had a maid dressing somebody. Finally!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
So who killed Mr. Black/Boddy?
Drawn with black India Ink & coloured with watercolours and Copic Markers.
Thanks to and for finding the reference for me for the pith helmet & WWI British expedition uniforms.

Thank you so much for the and especially saying it deserves a DD! I'm happy you think so.
I had always imagined the Clue characters in the 1920's style, so I did have to do a lot of research. The style in the 20's was harder [to research] than I thought, but it was fun.

Hello! Thanks for commenting on this. Drawing the characters from the game was just some random idea that came to me one day. I thought, "That would be neat to draw then in my style." So I did. I'm happy you like Miss Scarlet the best. I liked drawing her in the 1920's flapper style.

Thank you! I'm glad you like the way I drew the characters. Your English is not as bad as you believe it to be.
I think you are doing a good job at it.

Very impressive! It's great that you took the time to research the style of the era to give your picture a more period feel. Great work.

Hello~! Thanks for taking your time to comment on this, I appreciate it. Yeah, if I'm going to do artwork based off a particular decade, I have to do research because I want the clothing & hairstyless to be as accurate as possible. I thought the 1920's would be easy but it actually proved to be more challenging than I thought.

Hi! Thanks! I'm glad you think I represented & drew Colonel Mustard well. I researched to get the British WWI expedition uniform for reference (and had help from friends here on DA to find reference for the pith helmet) and I also looked up British WWI medals & pistols.

Oh, that's awesome that you recognized the characters before you saw the description. As for watercolours, I wish I had more time practicing with them, in order to get better. Sometimes I'll mix them with Copic markers if I'm feeling lazy or impatient (since Copics do look like watercolours sometimes).

copics are wonderful! i love working with them <3 i finally have a set of my own as a gift TwT i really like how they can look like watercolor but at the same time i get lazy and not want to clean up my mess as if i were to use paints TwT sadly copics are expensive...

AyaneShinobi In reply to wasashu [2008-06-15 22:00:50 +0000 UTC]
Oh ja, Copics are a bit expensive. But they are worth it. They last a long time. I've had this one Copic that finally ran out of ink/colour after one year. Oh wow, you got your own set as a gift? That's wonderful! They do look similiar to watercolours, that why I like them...if I get too lazy, I'll use a bit of Copic. :-p

Aloha! I'm glad you like this. I wanted to draw something different from what I normally do. My fan art is all based on Japanese video games (except my Anakin & Padme fan artwork) so I decided I'd do something totally random & base artwork off of an old boardgame.

I played this game when I was young as well. It's been many years since I last played it but the idea for fan art for Clue came up as a random thought (a few months ag) and I thought it would be interesting to do artwork based off the characters. It's something that is different from my usual fan artwork.

Aloha! I'm glad to know that you also think the 1920's style suits them. The men's style was rather easily (except for Colonel Mustard, since his outfit took the most research...luckily I had help with the uniform part). The women's style was a bit more difficult to research, since there were so many styles and they changed throughout the decade.

Thank you so much for the very awesome comment on this. I'm happy you like the way I drew the characters. I've always envisioned them in the 1920's style (mainly because of Colonel Mustard in his expedition uniform). It took quite a bit of researching to do this. It came out in the mid 80s and had a great cast. Tim Curry, Christopher Lloyd.. others. The funky thing was it had multiple endings, so you could go to the theater three or four times and see a different ending each time. The DVD version lets you see one ending or all of them at once.

Yes, that is why I asked for the reference. Thanks! It helped me out a lot. I haven't played the game in years either but a few months ago my family & I were talking about memories, etc....and board games topic came up & I thought, "Hey, that would be interesting to do artwork based off the game." It was a totally random idea but I figured it was something different from what I normally do.
I'm glad you like the way I drew Mr. Green. As for Mrs. White, I'm not good at drawing older people. And I'm terrified of drawing wrinkles because I'm just horrid at it! :-p
