Description This is the 2nd part to my Alice in Wonderland artwork. (The 1st artwork being the "Ikareta Ocha Kai", of course.) I had fun with this painting (except the grass...I'm so horrible at grass, so I had to make it simplified.)

I decided to make the "Queen of Hearts" younger & a heck lot prettier because she is depicted as this ugly ol' Queen. And I wanted to make the "King of Hearts" good-looking as well, except he kinda follows in the Queen's shadow. (Since she is the ruler after all.) I don't know...is there even a "King of Hearts" in the storyline? I don't remember. If not, oh well, I wanted a King anyway." And of course, the Heart Card Knights are "painting the roses red".

Alice stumbles into a courtyard where card knights are painting, only to come across a queen who looks like, "Hey, who the hell are you!?" ***By the way, this is my verison of "Fushigi No Kuni No Arisu-chan" (Alice in Wonderland).*** Pretty soon Queen of Hearts is going to say "Off with her head!". I reallly like the Queen's outfit (and the King's outfit is nice too.)

For those of you who haven't seen my previous Alice artwork, the outfit Alice is wearing is something I created for Anime Expo 2004. I was Elegant Gothic Lolita Alice. It was fun.

Lineart done with coloured India Inks & then coloured in with Japanese watercolours.

Alice in Wonderland storyline & characters Alice and Queen of Hearts (c) C.Lewis
Artwork & original costume/character design (c) J.E.McNeese. Please do not steal this artwork. Art theivery is low. But for those of you good folks out there, if you'd like the art to be on another site, please ask...I'll probably say yes.

the girl in the red as very small hands

The lady in red is the Queen of Hearts. Her hands are just a tad bit tiny but it's nothing bad. If you look at anatomy, a person's hand (when opened) is as long as the height of a face.

I think it looks better in your style.
It was so plain in the Disney movie D:

Thank you very much for the wonderful comment & the . I've never liked the Disney version at all; it was always nightmarish to me. The story itself is an oddity but it is fun to make a fan artwork based off of the story. Though in a way, I made Alice a lot older than she really is.

Aloha! Thanks for the comment on my Queen of Heart artwork. I'm happy you like it. The book has the most peculiar storyline but that is what makes it really intriging. Also, I made Alice older than she is in the book (since EGL girls are in their teenage years).

Perspective is a little off, but that's not a big deal, since it is mainly design that drives this piece. I really enjoy looking at the wonderful and colorful designs you create for the characters that you illustrate. Appears that you are running full throttle on this Alice series of yours, heheh.

On a side note, you might hate the grass now, but the more and more you make them, the more you will see how they are essential in strengthening the design work of your pieces. So you'll learn to love them, no matter how tedious they seem to get. Because in no time, you'll pay just as much attention to grass as you would the detailed outfits and flowers you create.

Keep up the superb job (^-^)!

Rwarharhar, I just knew it! And I slaved away on this nightmare & the perspective is bad. This is exactly why I don't do backgrounds. I'm so terrible at them! I hate architecture...and in my upcoming artwork I have more of it too. I'm sure it's gonna be tres horrible!

Thanks! It's actually not a real series I'm doing. I just decided to draw two scenes from the story.

And now, I'll never learn to love drawing grass! lol. I'm just too impatient for it.

DRa90NBoi In reply to AyaneShinobi [2007-09-06 00:56:24 +0000 UTC]

Heheh, don't take it in a bad way. If you really want to improve it, then just keep practicing. If it's not something you feel you can get into, then distort it enough to were it becomes a part of your style and not just an error that you didn't feel like covering up, you know what I mean?

Anyway, just keep up the great work, regardless if you continue to draw grass or not, heheh.

AyaneShinobi In reply to DRa90NBoi [2007-09-10 23:16:56 +0000 UTC]

Ha ha, nah, I'm not taking it in a bad way at all. I just think, "Darn it!" Really, I'm glad for your critique. I take it very seriously & I'm happy when you (and others) tell me if something is off, that way I can improve.

May you please tell me why the perspective is a bit off? Is it the castle? Wall? Sidewalk?

Right now I'm on a major artist block for some sadistic reason. I have this one painting that's been 75% done for the past two weeks. Everything I bring itout to work on it, I just end up staring at it and not finishing the background.

DRa90NBoi In reply to AyaneShinobi [2007-09-11 03:35:42 +0000 UTC]

Well, it's kinda hard to explain without showing it out visually, but I'll try my best to explain, heheh. All of the pieces you use to make the general background: the castle, wall, and sidewalk; are all good by themselves, but together, they distort the perspective. The all look relatively flat against each other. It's kind of hard to show any perspective since the major geometric shapes are in the background, but it can be done. I can see that since there is a wall, your horizon line may be somewhere either lined up to the bottom of the wall or somewhere in the region between the top and bottom of the wall (of course, laying behind the wall). Now with that, the vanishing point (the point where all the orthogonal lines meet), should be somewhere on that horizon line. Since the sidewalk seems to vanish into infinity, the point were it intersects the horizon line should be your vanishing point. Therefore, the orthogonal lines of your castle, if continued within the confines of the mind, should also meet that vanishing point. But in your case, there are no visible orthogonal lines, making it look flat. I know this is a lot of info, but it's better to illustrate it to you instead of explaining in words... I hope this helped and not fly straight over your head, heheh.

Omg, I know exactly what you mean. When you explained it, I didn't even have to look up at my picture to know what you were talking. When you explain it, I can see it all in my head & I'm thinking, "Oh no..." What you said really does make perfect sense. Thanks for helping me out. I'll have to pay attention to that fact next time I do a background.

Hmm, I bet the pic would have looked better without the sidewalk, but you know how I am about grass.

I shall not fear grass anymore!

Heheh, that's good.

No, the sidewalk adds a good compositional element to the piece, you just have to tweak with that and the background more. But in all it's still a pretty good piece as a whole.

Thanks a lot! The Queen's outfit is fun to draw. I wish I could draw her on bigger paper to show more detail. Her cape actually has brocade on it. I like the King too. I just drew him up in a minute. I think for Valentines Day I will draw the duo because I've done sketches of the couple, where she is actually smiling (and doesn't look so harsh). I always end up doing alternate sketches after I complete pics. For this painting, I did this sketch [afterwards] with the smiling Queen & King hugging and a knight is [shyly] giving Alice one of the roses. (While Alice is thanking him). And the other knight is jealous!

Thank you so much for the comments & on this! Oh, so you are working on an A.I.Wonderland with an EGL theme? That's great! I don't know why Alice seems so EGL-ish. I first came up with the outfit in early 2004 and eventually made cosplay for it that same year, so this year I decided I'd actually do artwork based on the costume itself (as well as the story). I look foward to when you upload your version of A.I.W. ^_^

Thank you so much! Ja, I always end up colouring things brightly. I don't know why it comes out that way. (I start out trying to make everything neutral but then the brightness takes over.) I'm glad you like the knights' expressions. I have fun when I just give them those dot-eyes...it reminds me of the "Ach Mein Gott Koenigstocher" artwork I did. ^_^
