Description
After many failures with trying to experiment with Photoshop (I wanted a gradient background), I just decided to put in a "Sea Foam Green" colour with barely there stars. I hope it doesn't look too tacky. I wanted a colour to compliment Rydia's green (but I wasn't going to put orange or red...eek! Even though they are complimentary colours, that would make the picture look really scary.)So I hope everybody likes this.
I just didn't want to leave in a plain white background.
This is Rydia from Final Fantasy IV. This design is pretty much original by me, yet inspired by all the bajillion different designs/version of Rydia. (Don't you just "love" how video game character artwork is so inconsistent?) She also has big 80's-esque hair, so I had fun with that as well. And for once, my greens were being good (usually green watercolours are hard to work with. At least for me they are.)
Drawn with black India Ink & then coloured in with watercolours.
Rydia character design (c) Yoshitaka Amano
Final Fantasy IV (c) Squaresoft

Hello! This is not Photoshop. I did this with watercolours. The only Photoshop I used was the green background with the stars. All of my artwork is traditional.

Ha ha, no need to apologize. I used to use Photoshop just for solid-colour backgrounds but now I'm actually starting to draw actual backgrounds. I've used traditonal all my life. I've tried digi-art but I don't like the way it makes my artwork look at all (plus the programs are nightmares to me). I'm not saying digi-art is bad...there are a lot of artists here who are amazing with digi-art...but traditional is for me.

Hello! Thank you so much, I am glad you like this! I'm pleased that a lot of people like the pose I gave her. Since she's a summoner, I wasn't sure what type of pose I could give her but in the end, everything worked out.

Aloha! Thanks for the on this & for saying the outfit and hair is detailed.
Her hair was especially fun to draw because Amano's versions of Rydia...he makes her have big hair. It was fun drawing big, flowing hair.

Yay for Rydia! I haven't finished playing that game, but I did like her. Awesome work and designing your own look for her. You make me want to dabble in watercolours with wonderful pieces like this!

Thank you so much! Watercolours are fun; slowly but surely I am getting used to them. It's taken me years to get where I'm at (and I want to get better). But I'm very happy with how this came out & all the great feedback I've been getting on this picture. It motivates me. Rydia was fun to draw; I like all the designs of her.

I've actually never seen Flashdance. I'll have to check it out.
I made her have a lot of stars because Amano's versions of her has stars. It was fun to draw.
Thanks for the great comment.

Yet another mind-blowing art piece! The green hues give the whole painting a mellow and laid-back feel. The bits of details here and there are awesome. I see no reason why you would need photoshop, dear.

Thanks for the great comment on this. I'm glad you like the greens. That is one of the main reasons why I like Rydia's design. She (along with Terra) have such a different look than the other main female characers of the FF games.
As for Photoshop, sometimes I will use it for backgrounds because I admit, more than 80% of the time I don't know what the heck to do for a background.

I was pleased how this came out (especially since my green watercolours were behaving quite nicely), so I am very happy how well this picture is doing so far. Thank you for the great feedback on this!
I'm also glad you like the way I coloured her hair as well.

Thank you for the great comment on this. Her character design[s] are great; I like how she is mostly green coloured (especially the hair). I'm glad that my green watercolour were behaving (usually they like to mottle and watermark for some reason. I have trouble with darker colours sometimes.) Either that or I'm just getting better at working with watercolours. I'm also glad you noticed the fabric designs.

I agree with you on saying fashion is an art form. Especially the couture. A lot that type of fashion makes me think, "Wow, that seems like a costume. I'd be a great character design." It's very inspiring to me.

rydia's design for the DS 3-D remake is sooo much simpler than her original. It's kind of annoying actually, since the original is so pretty
I love the variety of greens and all the stars!

AyaneShinobi In reply to faroresama [2008-04-30 20:03:10 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, Rydia's DS design is a lot more simple...but I did like stars on her sleeves (that's where I got the idea to put stars on the fabric hanging from her forearms). I did notice [Amano's] Rydia design[s] had a lot of stars, so thats why I made Rydia with all the stars. But I get what you're saying about the DS design; it's nothing compared to the originals. ^_^

Wow...thank you very much! That comment really means a lot to me. (Double-thanks for the too.) Oh, I wish I had time to work on a comic of some sort. I have a lot of different stories & about a 100+ character designs. If I won the lottery (I wish!) I'd do nothing but artwork & actually work on a comic/graphic novel.

I don't know. I think if you have the time to do art like this you could probably do a webcomic, too. You'd just want to take your time and build it a whole bunch of pages in advance.

AyaneShinobi In reply to thoththegrey [2008-05-01 22:12:09 +0000 UTC]
Trust me, I don't have time to do art as much as I would like. I can barely get in a drawing once every two weeks. (If it seems like I submit a lot of art at once, it's actually because I did it when I had time & saved it to submit it later).
