Description
It is so much fun to base artwork of the Alice in Wonderland (or "Fushigi No Kuni No Arisu" as it would be called in Japanese). I made a Elegant Gothic Lolita (a Japanese street-style that was very popular a couple of years ago) Alice in Wonderland costume for Anime Expo 2004. (Me and cosplayed as EGL's together that year.) That outfit was based off a "Mad Tea Party" (or "Ikareta Ocha Kai") painting I did in early 2004.Well, that particular painting is waaaay too big to scan, plus, my artwork is way better now, so I did an updated (and more detailed) version of that painting.
So yes, this is the Mad Tea Party, but my version of it (because I HATE the Disney version with a passion...it's a nightmarish film to me). Alice's outfit is the costume I made for AX2004. The Mad Hatter (I forgot how it is said in Japanese...something-boushiya...) is pouring her a cup of Grey Goose (a pear-flavoured vodka, from France). ^_^ It's not a "mad" party if it is without alcohol, now, is it?
I am very happy with this painting. This is one of the rare paintings I do that actually has a background.
I hope everybody likes this! I did work hard on it & it is all original character designs. The story "Alice In Wonderland" is, of course, not my idea. But it is fun to do artwork inspired by that odd story.
If this is well liked, then I will submit the 2nd part of Alice's adventures in Wonderland...I did a painting about a week ago & it is the "Queen of Hearts" theme.
As is with most of my art, the lineart for this is coloured India Inks. Then it is coloured in with Japanese "Koi" brand watercolours.

It doesn't look like she wants those cakesβ¦
If she doesn't want them then I'll have them! Nice art; the emotions come across well.

Thanks for the comments on this! (And for the
as well!) Yeah, Alice isn't too fond of the Mad Tea Party, especially since Mad Hatter is pouring her some vodka to drink.

That year was fun; we had the biggest EGL group ever. It still kinda bums me out that I've never seen any photos of it, though. ;(
Ja, A.I.Wonderland inspired art is always fun. ^_^

Ah yeah, I don't think I've seen any pics of the group either. ;_; I have one of the two of us somewhere, though.

I really like the coloring in this picture, and the detail in their clothing/fabric and background. I really like the facial expressions! Alice looks worried about where she is, and the other is joyous about having company.
I noticed that the Mad Hatter's hand is a bit small? Though you have mentioned it before about drawing small hands. Then I noticed his arm, given the space between himself and the teacup, shouldnt his elbow be a bit more inwards and his arm more foreshortened give the angle?

AyaneShinobi In reply to Riikahi [2007-08-27 21:23:50 +0000 UTC]
His hand appears to be small because it's at an odd angle, but I see what you're saying. I actually had somebody pose for me like that, in such an odd way of pouring something. I admit, I did make a mistake there! I've recently have become so frustrated with my artwork because even though it is in manga-style (and manga is definitely un-proportionate), I do incorporate real-life proportion & anatomy into my artwork. I've been having a difficult time with [male] anatomy, so I actually went out & bought an anatomy book this weekend. I hope to get better at it. Thanks for pointing it out.

Yea anatomy can be frustrating sometimes. I usually draw a rough sketch first and keep editing it until the anatomy looks right and redraw it on fresh piece of paper keeping the rough as reference. Or maybe the second piece of paper after I screw up again haha.

I know how you feel. When I do my artwork, I keep erasing it over & over again, but then after a while, I think, "Oh well, it looks alright I suppose." I do have a lot of sketches that have to do with the artwok I submit. Often I end up doing parodies of the pic on the sketch pages.

I start on a new one since my paper is usually too damaged from all the erasing lol

Everytime I look at your work, I feel like using my watercolors again.
I always admire your attention to details. I'm drooling over the details in the chair and tablecloth. *__* Your preference for using watercolors is to my preference for colored pencils. You've clearly mastered this medium.

Thank you so much! I actually had fun doing more detailed arwork, even though it took quite a bit of time to do. But I don't mind working on a piece of artwork if it takes some time because as long as the details come out right, I'm happy.
Coloured pencils! They are much fun to use as well. I find that doing shading & lighting on skin is so much easier to achieve when using coloured pencils. (I just think it's easier to shade using coloured pencils in general.) Watercolours take a bit more patient when it comes to that.
Thanks for the as well.

Thank you so much for the comment & . Ah, I see you notice the cat. Usually when the Chestire Cat is drawn, he's made to look so ugly. But in my version I just wanted him to look like a normal cat with a normal cat grin.

Wow, this is lovely! I love the details you've put into it! And lolita Alice is very lovely...
I've never seen the Disney version (o.0, yeah, never seen Peter Pan, either) but it looks quite scary...

Thank you so much! And double-thanks for the as well. Oh yes, it was fun making a Lolita Alice back in 2004. It was fun to wear because it was so fluffy & girly. As for the Disney version of Alice in Wonderland, I remember seeing that as a child & it was scary. Even now when I think about it, the music & artwork (and just the whole feeling of the movie) just felt...wrong. As for Peter Pan...I didn't like that either.

Yay, backgrounds are--or should--be fun, heheh. I, too, should try an make more backgrounds than just sunset backdrops, heheh. I'm trying to practice more on animal anatomy, buildings and mechanical objects, landscapes, as well as feet and hands. That practice may be a better influence on my backgrounds and if you practice some of those, your backgrounds will improve as well.
This piece reminds me of a book illustration. You put very intricate details on the various designs and decor in the scene, and it really shows the hard work and time you've put into this. Keep up the superb job (^-^)!

It's because sunsets are so easy to draw! But yes, I am practicing more with backgrounds. Sometimes it can be a tad bit frustrating (I'm reaaaallly bad with trees because of the leaves) but I am hoping to get better with it as I go along.
Animal anatomy...I am SO bad at drawing animals! The reason the Chestire Cat came out looking good is because I based it off a pose of one of my mum's cats [who was sitting down in the window-sill]. ^_^ You should see how bad I am with everything else. Especially horses! I drew a knight on a horse....so bad! My knight came out good but the horse? It had square legs.
So terrible, it makes me laugh when I think about it.
Wow, thanks for saying that this looks like an illustratioin to a book!

Yes, organics... Especially trees and all their leaves and branches! But patience is the key to that--otherwise you can go the route of the Impressionists and paint something that is the representation of light bouncing off the tree in various brush strokes.
Geeze... Horses are hard to draw, unless you've drawn them so much and taught yourself how to draw them--but a person with zip experience drawing horses, it definitely is a challenge. Especially for me, and I live in a place where there's a horse ranch across the street!
Yes, I think your medium helps a lot in creating that book illustration feel to it.

I will never draw an animal again.
People are the only things I can draw. Architecture? I've tried but damn...it's just...hard. I know practice makes perfect but sometimes I just get frustrated with architecture. Although I'm incorporating more of it into my backgrounds, even if it is something as simple as a wall. (Although I doubt just a wall really qualifies as "architecture".)
D
Ha ha, I was tyring to do the "Impressionist" thing with the tree's leaves above but I guess I failed at that. I really need to be more patient with leaves. ^_^

Oh, I am so glad you like this. It was really fun to draw & although it took a lot longer than my usual artwork [to complete] because of the detail, it was well worth it. I'm glad you like the Mad Hatter as well. I was going to make him a weirdo but then I decided I would draw him as a better looking guy...that way Alice could fall for him tricking her into drinking Grey Goose.
Oh well, she needs to lighten up anyway...
