~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Alright, so as you may have been able to tell, I've been in an art mode this past week. The 3rd artwork submission in a span of a week? That's rare for me to do that! At the same time, I've been doing a lot of art to get my mind off things; this past week has been hard on me but it's personal, so I probably shouldn't write about it anymore.

I love the Steampunk style. A few months ago I first saw Steampunk cosplay & it was very intriguing. I also looked up the Steampunk artwork here on DA and it's great. It seems like Steampunk style is based off the mid-to-late 1800's (and even turn-of-the-century 1900) yet the people have technology. Not technology like we have today, but they technology in the Steampunk world is used with what resources people had (in the 1800's) and steam is used to power things. It kind of reminds me Doc in Back to The Future III, how he made the ice-machine and other things out of the resources he had. So all of this inspired me to create original Steampunk character designs.

So here are two original character designs of mine. The man is Schuyler Marcetti (age 25), a sort of free-lance mercenary. The thing on his back is a sniper-rifle. The sniper-rifle I designed for him is awesome...I wanted to show it off but I figured there was no need for him to be holding a gun. His bad habit is smoking and he holding a glass of whiskey. (By the way, Schuyler is pronounced as "Sky-lar"). The lady is Faythe Varela (age 23), a law student. She is drinking mimosa. This is the first time Schuyler and Faythe meet...they are out on the balcony at a pub.

I'm very happy how this came out. It even inspired me to write a story about the two of them (just yesterday). I drew this sometime last week but I didn't colour it until yesterday. I'm pleased how everything came out. I also experimented with a different kind of lighting.

Ha ha, my title sounds like the movie "When Harry Met Sally", now that I realized it. But hey, a title is a title; I didn't base it off the movie title. It was the 1st thing that came to mind.

Drawn with a 0.03 Copic Mulitliner, then coloured in with Copic Markers and Watercolours. The white highlights were done with a gel pen.

Off-note: I'm so sad the Olympics ended.

I really love the theme in this one, it's extremely creative and unique. You where really able to show, that they are standing in some industrial city.

I absolutely love their costumes to, especially the lace on her outfit. You put a lot of detail into their clothes, from the lines on his pants to all the accessories the girl is wearing. I like that you have the hot airballoons in the back, and their poses are well thought out to. You can definitely tell that their having a good time and that their talking about something. My favorite part about one of the characters is, I really love the design of her boots I wish I had them. Awesome work here, this looks great.

FFXII-ish look? How so? To me, Steampunk seems more like Victorian Era-late 1800's mixed with a bit of technology...Hmmm, it's hard to explain what exactly Steampunk style is. :-p But thanks for the on this, I'm happy that you like this as well!

Thanks. I think this is my best work so far as well. I'm happy you think I'm getting better at backgrounds. I hope so! I absolutely hate working with backgrounds, but seeing how much better backgrounds make my artwork look, I'm willing to work with them. As for their poses, I wanted them to look more realistic. I never do side-profiles (such as Schuyler's pose) but in this case, it came out right, so I'm pleased.

I think your coloring got better. Ive always perferred your works with backgrounds, typing of which, the characters really look like they belong in that setting. I also see some great texture work, gives it a more realistic look.

Though Ive noticed that the shadows of your characters always have a light bit of shadow right below their feet. The light source is always right above them. But it works for this picture because theyre outside on a cloudy day.

AyaneShinobi In reply to AnomalousChild [2008-08-26 15:18:21 +0000 UTC]

This particular lighting is different from what I usually do. I made it slightly behind them and at the side, sort of like lighting in the late morning/early afternoon. Yes, I mostly do give people in my drawings a light source above them. It's the easiest to do & also fun to work with shading. I make the shadows small because when the sun/light is above people, the shadow is very slight. The only time where a shadow should be long is when the sun is lower, such as morning or late afternoon/evening. I see this mistake (even with popular artists) where the lighting is above the character but the shadow is long. In this picture, I barely gave them a shadow at their feet since the brick wall blocks the sunlight. Lighting is hard...I've been experimenting with it lately & trying out a different way to shade/light...I'm glad you noticed that (and with the colouring as well).

Oh yes...thanks for the the 's on other artworks as well. I appreciate it greatly!

This is great! I love the coloring, and the detail in this looks amazing! The background is awesome, and I love all the little additions such as the stripes and jewelry on the clothing. I love their designs, and their expressions are nifty<3 Amazing job!!
As a side note--I love steampunk :3 My story is set in a steampunk version of the 1800s, and I love designing outfits X3

Thanks for all those great comments on this! I'm glad you noticed all the little details; I made sure to make this more detailed than I usually draw. I really enjoying drawing the Steampunk style...it's very different than what I normally do, especially when it comes to the colours (it was kind of nice to get away from my usual bright colours and work with the black, grey, brown, white, and maroon colours).

I've noticed some of your characters have 1800's-themed outfits sometimes; I think that's neat, especially with the colours you use. Your colouring is unique, especially when you use all these different colours together. Normally such colours would clash, but when you use them on your characters, it looks really good.

Thanks for checking.

I think DA is messed up at the moment because when I view all the new deviations, they don't show up on the homepage either...just in the gallery section. Ah, gotta love technology...:-p

Thanks for the comment on this! I'm glad you like the designs. They were fun. I almost was going to give him a brocaded vest but then I thought, "Nah...I don't have the patience right now."

Strange. Everything updated super-fast for me yesterday. I have 13 favs on my latest image and it's only been up for 2 days. I didn't realize how famous Metroid was but then again I put in a ton of key words, maxing out the keyword field.

That's what I thought when I was going to add reflections to the windows of my latest image: "I don't have the patience anymore."

Castle Falkenstein...hmmm....*Looks it up* Ah, I assume you are talking about the steampunk-themed RPG. (That's awesome, I didn't even know there was one). Thanks. It was fun making characters to fit into this genre, especially since I like anything that is periodical (from 1920 and below) whether or not it be historic or fantasy.

This absolutely fantastic! It's like HG Wells melded with Normal Rockwell and Fritz Lang. This is one of the most delightful pieces I've seen in DA in a long time.

Wow...that comparison to Well, Rockwell, and Lang are a HUGE compliment...I am very pleased you get the feeling from this. Your comments on this make me smile. I really enjoyed making this piece. It is something different from what I normally draw (since I tend to use bright colours and this is a complete opposite), plus I am happy how the anatomy (and even the background) came out. Thanks for ing this as well.

Hi! Thank you so much for the on this! I had a lot of fun with this particular work because it is something way different than I usually do, especially the colours (since I tend to work with bright colours and this is the opposite). It is watercolour and Copic. Schuyler, Faythe, the wood detail, flowers/plant, zeppelin, and hot air balloon are Copic and the rest is watercolours. I like using the two of them together, especially since Copic resembles watercolours.
