Damn, this is why you are my most favorite model horse customizer... You're so talented and amazing! What model was this before customized?

I love that anatomy... Especially neck and skull, and that front leg with visible tendon! Visible spine is also awesome detail.

Thank you, I really appreciate it! I try to keep anatomy and physical plausibility in mind. I'm hoping my next one will be even better

I looked at your gallery, and I am impressed by it. And undead creatures are awesome... I am also a model horsier and anatomy freak myself, so that's a lot of interest for me, good luck for the next zombie horsie! I need to see it then. x)

Why thank you! I definitely enjoyed creating him and have plans for many more (even other animals) in the future, so it'll be a fun journey I can tell you that Thanks! I have a thread open on Fallen-Leaves to show the progress of the current zombie if you wanna keep tabs on it! most of my work has come to a halt since I'm focusing on getting my dad's father's day gift model completed. After that, though, I should be able to pick her back up

I can imagine that making him was enjoyable! I wish I could do portrait models for my ooooold zombie horse characters (hmm I was 9 yrs old when I created one). I personally got rid of model plans because I finish stuff so rarely that it's just pain to keep in one; then I do what I do, the model makes themselves. (Btw I should watch you right now... I rarely watch anyone!) Thanks for the link! I should learn more english because it's a bit hard to read forums what are in it, but as I rememeber how I learned this language mostly via model horse hobby... So why not. So much nostalgia.
Hey, have a joy of work, then, with the gift! It must be super unique. 8)
I've made some zombies too, but not as horses (no skills!):

More in my gallery if you're interested...

Oh yes! The best part was tearing apart an existing model horse and just completely remaking it into what he became. My current one will basically just be manipulation - very little "frankensteining" involved, but I have a great vision for her and can't wait to carry through with it!
I often design things and never create them, but I still keep them around in case there's something I like about certain ones that I can use for whatever project I'm working on that calls for whatever it is I like. It's good for reference basically haha
Oh thanks!! I appreciate it! And no problem! If you have google Chrome there's an option for it to translate pages into your native language. It might not be accurate, but it's an option XD
Awh they're cute! I plan to put maggots in this next zombie Let the gore begin!

So much ideas and so less time! Or not, I have time for sculpting and so, but inspiration is somewhere else than with me. Too often... But when I decide to continue to custom work, then I really do! Frankensteining is awesome, it tells a lot of the thing you do and what I could do. Should learn to use that Dremel what I got ages ago, I love to destroy stuff.
I have same... And I have always this in my head: "whatever I do or draw, I can always make a remake version or sculpt or anything from it". I also like to see related stuff around me, since I'm very materialistic person and have always something in progress (you know, when art is whole life for someones).
Yea. I have Firefox and those translators, but translators aren't good with Finnish... Just words or short sayings are easy and good to translate, but that's why I have them open always. Have laughed so hard even with those simple words what Google translator shows soooo stupidly wrong! xD Today I had a trouble when I tried to translate a comic page, then I gave up with it because I had no idea how to translate a random saying what's not in fact even perfect language (it was dialect), so how the toe I could. And here's the truth that Finns should speak and write english as well as their native language. Here's no more possibilities if we need to survive. ;D
Maggots! Yeaa I should test them for my zombies also, as those worms are easier to do to be believable, and because I'm not so perfect with other parasites (those worms are so damn small... And the rats are practically a bit larger than traditional scale, but I think them as that). Should read that old horse book to find some ugliness there! Have some more "zombies", as these are only super badly injured: afuze.deviantart.com/art/Herd-…
I guess that you know very well the feeling what says for you: "now need to draw something bllllooooooooodyyyy and goreyyyy" and you have no more possibilities than start... Have had those moments luckily often.

Yes exactly! It's that very reason that I've sculpted an original "zombie" base because then I can redo it any way I want and make so many zombies from it. All original, too, so I can cast them and sell the resins. I've had so many people tell me "if only there were more of him!" which gave me the idea XD
Oh yes, that dremel will be your best friend. I've used mine to the point that it's starting to go on strike XD It overheats quickly (not hard to do since it's hot in here on a daily basis anyway) and takes hours to cool down so I have to work slow. But until it just stops running, it's gonna be put through the work!
Oh gosh yes XD I find motivation by looking through google. I'll search things like "emaciated horses" or "Horse wounds". The gorier the better. I have a whole file of wounds and things, so I laugh at the thought of someone getting on my computer and accidentally clicking the file bahaha!

You have your own resin? Woa. Especially a zombie resin is perfect idea... I've practically never seen any resins IRL or other "real model horses" because I have only Schleich CMs and Breyers are so difficult to get (I have two Breyers...)... Your country is then a dream for model horsies, you americans seem to have a lot of Breyer traditional models very often!
I really need to make my own zombie horse someday. The idea is so old and classic! As I remember that zombies were a part of my worst horse-hobby-season. x)
Micromotor is also a friend, a TINY friend, but I have no idea how to get them (it's dentist drill). Had to use that at school years ago, so I think that Dremel is a little scary compared to some old micromotor. But I tame iiiit! >8D (I fell in love with mini drills at that school, I did mini metalwork alias jewellery or whatever it is, worked with silver ans bronze, etc.) Especially because those safety descriptions (whatever...) are stupid in one way: they tell that "this tool is deadly, be warned, it can attack you and explode and be too hot and you can't use it more than 30 minutes per moment and and and" and I know that many things can happen without any danger.
Woa, sounds like your Dremel is already old. A bit like my previous computer, he got crazy from being used!
Ouaaa I miss Googling! I did that a lot some years ago. One reason to stop it can be that I'm super bad with using any reference and model for art (generally people can't understand that I draw from imagination mostly). But, in fact, I understood once that if I use more than one ref, I use them better. (Happened with this: afuze.deviantart.com/art/Orhi-… ) And I tried to search "emaciated horse" and found one good already: s775.photobucket.com/user/cfoj… Poor horsie. It's still quite interesting to see how straight horse spine is, and same with the ribcage. Generally people think that horse's back is curved; when it is in bones also, then it comes from being ridden. But if we go back to thin animals - I can say I love akhal tekes just because they are generally that thin as healthy.

I've got a few original sculptures intended to be resins One's a Przewalski that needs a bit more work and then the zombie base.
Oh yes definitely! Every July in the Kentucky Horse Park, Breyer holds Breyerfest where a TON of people go to see live horse shows and compete in model horse shows and buy models and resins and all that good stuff. I went in 2011 and I plan to go next year We even have stores specifically for Breyer horses, just about every tack shop carries them, and you can usually find them at retail stores like Meijer and Walmart, but only in specific locations and usually only classics.
Yeah, going on 8 years old now! He was lightly used up until a few years ago when I started getting back into drastic customs. I don't like stopping when I've got a good workflow, so I would put him through hours of work without a break and now he's retaliating XD
I use upwards of 12 references for any given work if I know how I want it to be but can't get it out of my head effectively. Like the zombies, I know how I want them to loo but I like to have realistic wounds, too. So I have to look for real wounds and use them however I like. Or poses, even - my first zombie was a take on a horse getting up. His haunches were supposed to be tucked more, but because of how the model was originally sculpted, I couldn't do that while balancing him so I had to make it the way I did. It turned out for the better I think!

I just wondered your OSC sculptures from your gallery, I love the ideas... Visual working, I mean. My clays aren's any good for that scale things; silk clay is weird un-smudgable stuff and those others are just cheap and for customizing... I still made some rat OSCs from them, to see how I fail it. But apoxie could be amazing!
WHAT THE?! Stores for only Breyers?! Uuuh that's somethin what never happens in here (nothing figure/model shops exists here)! I know only few "real" modellers in Finland and that's all. And I'm only one of them who is not in Facebook > I'm alone with this. xD Because the forum is deaaaaad. Here's no longer even a working association for horse modellers... The only one system to get Breyer in Finland is to buy them from web, and very often from USA then. Factory models are still too much for my billfold at all, so I can't practically collect these (Schleich is also too expensive; compared to their quality today). :/ You're so super lucky!
I should sell some art and those traditional scale tack what I make. My only problem is still that here is no customers for me! All modellers do their tack by own hands or then they do only horses... As I do mostly tack only because I can't do horses that much. (Still, one Breyer trad can pay about 40-50 euros and I could get over 20 euros from a mini suitcase, so if I make few of them then I could get already good stack of money to get horses. Am I weird.)
Haha, a revenge of the dremel, make a comic and name it from that! xD
Compromises are OK with curious art and refs. I in fact invented one practice thing for visual art - one photo for anatomy, second for color and third for shading, etc. More interesting as in the school had... But my school wasn't "my type" of school. No more about it. I personally am bad with any refs, as I said, but I still swear a lot that "I should look at those refs more... This failed because I got already ages ago blind for horse anatomy and can't shade this well, jajaja". In other words, I'm possibly "too good" with horse art, because I can draw them practically from my head. I still fail, but I can say what's wrong in someone other's drawing. xD Weird. And this doesn't mean that I could be selfish but vice versa (relatives just scream to me that "be more friendly for yourself, your art is perfect"... It's not!). I'm pessimistic perfectionist!
...back to the main thing. Yea. Refs aren't easy if you don't "handle" the theme; a problem for some people I know IRL. I remember those times when I knew horse anatomy as well as possible, learned even all muscles and bones and drew them a lot from imagination, but go and see, how I do them today? Not well. That's why I haven't drawn zombies, but demons... In fact they can be more for me because zombies have one thing I can't understand: too much possibilities! I just have no idea of how the wounds could be; again I understand that I should use refs. They could free my imagination a little. But they can be zombies as well, practically: afuze.deviantart.com/art/Dress… In fact I laugh when I remember how my twin saw that... He said: "Hey now I steal that jawbone and those teeth from you, damn!" And he draws A LOT of undead horses.
(More undead can be easily found from deep of my horse folder... Because they're old, they contain more imagination used but are anatomically stupid. But it was then. And plz those old daubs - 2012 and older - are not for faving anymore.)

Oh yes! I used Super Sculpey polymer clay for my original sculptures and Aves Apoxy Sculpt for my customs. Sometimes I'll use both polymer and epoxy for my originals depending on whether or not I can sculpt it all in the polymer or if I have to do certain parts epoxy.
Yes!! There was one a few miles from where I lived. This woman turned her house into a store and I'd see her at every tack swap in the state with her Breyer vendor stand. Here in Kentucky there are a few tack shops that carry them and I think in Knoxville there's a store that carries them They're all over the place!
You should definitely check out Fallen-Leaves and Model Horse Blab then! FL is dying but we're trying hard to keep it alive and MHB is booming with other hobbyists from all over the world! Many of us even do pickups and ship to those who don't get models in their country or don't live close to a vendor. It's usually expensive since we charge the price of the model plus shipping, but it's a great way to keep in touch with other hobbyists and get the newest models Also, MH$P is another way to get models and customs and most of us there ship internationally too! I've seen models sell for as low as $5 (without shipping) but they're bodies. They're great for customizing and you can then turn around and sell them for a profit! The price of international shipping is killer but when you create something and sell it for double the cost of shipping, I think it's worth it. So you might check that out if you haven't already
Yeah I have to give it days off so it doesn't kill me XD
I use references no matter what I'm doing, even if I don't need them. I'm always looking to better my skills and my understanding of anatomy and lighting and all that jazz. There's definitely a difference between referencing and blatantly copying and I feel that no artist should think they're the same, or that they shouldn't use references for any reason. To each their own, of course - people do certain things for a reason and I understand that. I just personally prefer to use references at any chance that I get. I get a more refined result. You can tell by looking at my gallery. Stephen the Gay Neanderthal , for instance, only used a reference so I could draw neanderthals. That's it everything else was imagination, including the pose. I'm Fabulous~ was also drawn without references except for the design of the unicorn as it's based off the unicorn in Red dead redemption. Whereas I Need You, Cas used a reference that I used to paint. Same with my drawing of Spine , from Steam Powered Giraffe which is currently in the process of becoming a digital painting.
I use zombies as a way to help me learn anatomy actually. I can sit there and draw the muscles and skeletons all day but until I actually apply it to something I'm not going to learn a thing. So that something is zombies~ With each zombie I draw I learn the anatomy a little more and it's even better when I sculpt them, because then I feel how it's supposed to be. Heck I learned how to draw and sculpt horses by feeling the real things because I build this visual map in my head like some form of scanner xD It's how I've always been haha

Only one polymer clay I have used was Cernit, what's banned from my use now. I hate ovens (some phobia or whatever, because they can be dangerously hot and I'm one fool with any home machines...), so I needed to find a better clay for my simply sculpts. I still use Krea and it's relatives for customs, because it's cheap and I find it easily here. Apoxie is in my dreams, and I should get it sometimes (not before I really bring to life my horse modeling hobby) to see how perfect it practically is.
Okay, that explains a lot. Now I know how americans get so much tack for their models, as in Finland it's very rare to see anything good in others that traditiona scale... Because all Schleich hobbiers and some are children, who just play with their horses... Honestly I'm a bit wondered how no one has commented my newer and realistic Schleich scale halters. (They're unique in Finland; every other Schleich scale collector here doesn't know about "model horse hobby", they just make things what are nice for them. They don't have anything like dA or other galleries but only poor websites or blogs... And that's same with those who really do good tack to be Finns, but as I said, I can never get contact to them.) They like those old ones what aren't more than toys anymore in my opinion.
Everything is so difficult here. :/ Especially a special tack shop for model horses sounds like a weird dream what can never be true, but now I know that it really CAN exist. But only far away from here. (Hmm and why the toe someone linked me Rio Rondo and put a weird smiley there, as a "comment" to my miniature bit I made: afuze.deviantart.com/art/Doubl… For me that looks like that they tried to explain that I could buy tack from USA... Seriously, never. Only horses if it's the best situation.)
I know FL, and those Finns there are nowadays only what were in our own forum. :/ I think I COULD register there but not sure yet, as I have no life with model horses so much. I can only swear my idiotic patience what makes me impossible to centralize with english. Hard trying still! I bookmark those... MHSP is one of the oldest model horse sites I ever knew, and I have spent some time there when checking prices and all. Nice place for optimistic persons.
Sorry, now I need to link one amazing Finnish modeller... She's the only one in this country who has resins published: destriermodels.webs.com/ Please check her works, they drop jaws (as with another one Finn).
Be careful with it, Dremels are like scary creatures and can do things! Heh.
That's very good. I think (know) that if you look at some pics while drawing the same thing long enough, it will "burn into your mind" and then you've really learned it and know naturally how it should be drawn. That happened to me with horses, needed 10 years for it but still. With rats it happened in a half of years of that, and I still practice in both. A moment ago I did few sketches/doodles and used refs to see how I understand them, and I surprised myself; earlier that day I almost ripped my eyes off and something because I wasn't used references that much. I'm not still good at that, but I can tell that it helped my imagination.
I'm also a living scanner sometimes, not as I could like still. I scan only stuff I am badly addicted to...
...sorry for stopping this comment, drawing for few hours made me an ugly headache. Hot table lamps should be illegal! And stupid pills don't help although they should be made just for that type of harms.

You'll love Apoxy sculpt! It does have a shelf life but it lasts a while. Mine's a year old and starts getting crumbly early on (as opposed to when it was fresh it would stay flexible for a while) but a bit of rubbing alcohol does wonders to keep it saturated enough to stay together, so it can be used after its freshness has gone without really any change in end product quality - it just takes a little extra work to get it flawless. It's not a nuisance by any means, though.
Oh yeah, I make my own tack. (I think you saw the set I made? If not here it is ) I've made a few english saddles before I made this, but they were made with less-than-ideal materials so I'm going to try again with proper tools and materials once I get some extra money to play around with. They didn't look too bad so I think I might be able to do some good with proper tools. We'll have to see though!
Oh! RioRondo is a wonderful model horse tackmaking supply shop! They were linking you to it because you can actually buy bits made for certain scales, instead of making your own bits. It gives it a more realistic look. riorondo.com/hardware/engbits.…
They look like this on a model.
This is where I get my leather and hardware for making saddles, bridles, and breastcollars.
Honestly, your English isn't that bad. I can understand you just fine and I think you understand me fairly well, so you should be fine there
Oh yes, I love Destrier's work! I want her morgan resin so badly. He looks a lot like the Belgian/Morgan horse I had last year. I've been following her ever since I saw her thread showcasing him on FL.
Oh trust me, I know the dangers of power tools~ I almost cut my hand off in woodshop thanks to my clumsy self breaking the belt sander. That accident sent me to the hospital and I've been afraid of power tools ever since XD I persevere though, in the name of art!
Yes, exactly! I've been studying the anatomy of horses since I was 7 (I was really competitive with my friend and wanted to be the better artist) so I've got about 12 years of study under my belt, including behaviours/communication habits, movement (still studying that however) general muscle anatomy and flexibility, tack, conformation for certain breeds/types (which ties into anatomy) etc. It's something I'll study for as long as I live, and I can't tell you how much owning the real thing has helped. I'd often find myself palpating my horse's muscles to learn where the divots are and how they work and such. It's quite fun!
And no worries, I oftentimes just leave the comment up and finish it later. I can't keep my attention on one thing at a time, since I'm usually doing 5 things at once. So other things catch my attention easily and ruin my train of thought haha

I quess I could, it's so recommended and popular clay. Also a plastic container/bukcet sounds better than a plastic bag (the bag gets ALWAYS a tiny hole somewhere too closed to the clay...), and I've practically found containers a lot better than a random bag. You can use the empty box for something else when the clay is used. I hope that if I get Apoxie I could use it more often as I do with clays just now. I have opened clay bags what aren't any better to use because I use them that rarely. Should rip my scrag off more often and just finish those horses... That's still good to know how to make the clay more flexible and so, when I can get Apoxie. Finns say that it's super expensive for that size of the bukcets, but it pays itself back so well that it's not so bad.
I saw and liked. I've never understood how to make saddles, since I draw only english types of them. Western saddles could still fit better to my personal taste of riding, as I want to be as friendly as possible for horses. And because I have that western rider doll also, he needs his own style at all. I've dreamed of commissioning saddles for my horse(s) sometimes, but I need to think it at few years yet. Because they can pay a lot and I'm bad commissioner in fact, personally try also to get money from my own work. (Or then TRADE could sound amazing in that!)
I found a craft knife tool set from local bookshop, but left it there because I already have one craft knife and have survived well with it and scissors. I don't think I could cut any better with a new knife if I have yet problems with the leather, and because tools don't make the artists, as you know. (The set had maybe 10 blades and three handles.) Don't know then should I already change the blade to my knife, I want to use everything so long that it practically can't work anymore. Proper tools are the key for good job still, in one way. I've practically seen that. I own personally maybe 10 pliers, huge stack of tiny metal pieces and metal wire stacks in few variations, few types of chains etc. And my own pliers are in very good condition compared to ones what I saw at school (luckily it's over) and some other places... I am in a huge trouble without my own tools. Even sculpting tools make me addicted to them. xD But it's good. I also use just one type of glue, it makes this all possible. And although the tube says that it's super dangerous for skin, I've seen nothing wrong when gettin a bit glue to my fingers... Hah. But who even could let it be in fingers for many days?
My personally samallest works were Schleich scale halters and all other with that thin leather, as with cat harness and mini pet collars: afuze.deviantart.com/art/Andal…
afuze.deviantart.com/art/Mwjan…
afuze.deviantart.com/art/Five-…
(Damn that all stuff is made for jewellery things only in Finland, no one makes stuff what fits to model horses and miniatures...)
- And as I do some mini tack, not that well as I could like, I do also mini bags. Have seen yet?
afuze.deviantart.com/art/Dry-b…
afuze.deviantart.com/art/Zkolk…
For more pics try those keywords at my gallery (I think this is needless to say), I've personally found them super good at trying to find stuff from a gallery what's that large. But those bags are really another thing for me, and originally I tried to do them because I understood that I can never have so much money that I could buy that many bags from internet/anything, so I'm lucky to have interest to do them all myself. Made me mad about leather bags, I love themmmm! So much ideas...
I spend a bit time for Rio Rondo stuff searching sometimes, but then I let it peace because the english there is soooo difficult and so. And if I understand right those prices, as euros and dollars don't vary so much... 7 dollars, about 7 euros? For one bit it's already very much (I can be super wrong). The third thing is that I don't need to buy that much when I can do rings by myself, although some of those buckles and so look delicious against my skills (I have no skills). But it's too far away from me. The bits and others are, yes, very interesting and could be helpful. Tacky Wax I can buy from Finnish dollhouse shop I know and found good, so it's not the biggest harm. xD And I have already blue-sticker. afuze.deviantart.com/art/Cande… Sorry if I sound a bit pessimistic, but it's this country. Everything should be bought from USA and Germany (there's a lot of horsemodellers I think!).
Jep, I understand. American english is more difficult than British, possibly Finnish schoold then teach more British than it. But as you see I have learned a lot in few years, because how the toe I could talk with others than learning more english. Only practically; schools don't teach stuff what's needed in my hobbies, so I must do all myself.
I almost bought her draft resin until I realised that I have nothing money and space. And because I have no painting skills... But eeeeeek the draft is just my style! As I drew ages ago... Now I link the another artist: koni.weebly.com/ That one is the best reason that I even am horsemodeller now. In fact, those both artists. I think you know also her already?
Oh, belt sander! I love how they work but the voice is horrific, as I've studied metalworks (I left my school unfinished with that, because of the school I graduated from few weeks ago) and have met all killing tools there. xD Grinding wheel is something I never want to touch, in the scale I've tested it once. It's handsome tool but... Too scary. I hope that Dremel is my new pet when I get familiar with it, then. Yah, do that! xD
Aaand now is the part I need to write more because of that unfinished last comment I did. Heha.
Quite same as I had, although I didn't understand it as ANATOMY but as a WAAA HORSIEEEES style. To see how child's brains can work... But I learned a lot of anatomy when I drew horses. Understood that once when I doodled another one species and realised that "hey, this has a hamstring in right place!". Now I don't remember more than the feeling. Horse anatomy is so misunderstood that I'm even proud of being a horse artist, although it got off my possibilities to start anything new (struggling!). It's true that artist should understand that using a model is different that using a ref. Tried to explain that a lot for people IRL but then I gave up because, to be honest, they can't understand it. Some very amateur artists... Or then they draw (and fail) for fun because they don't care, what's a thing what I simply can't understand.
Blatant copying is, not only a way to copy the image you see, also very impersonal in art. Because art is showing yourself to others and often to tell things, feelings, visual diary etc. When someone copies another one's picture, they copy all what's your but not their own; then they steal your feelings and some part of life. Someones say that "so what, why it bothers you that they draw similar art as you? You can't own a style and someone else could be proud that they even like your style, be less jealous!1!" I've personally heard that, I think, said to me by someone. Personally I don't think that I could accept someone stealing my style. Of course I can't officially own it but still... The copier was one I know IRL and needs A LOT OF PRACTICE at everything yet; I based my style to draw rats from realism because here is no well drawn popular rat art, in this world. With horses it's just a joke (because it's true) that someones draw Spirits and other artists' styles; I base from realism and can mix to my style something I've seen as good in someone else's art, but I still mix it that well that you can't easily say that "hey that reminds of her/his style!". It's getting inspiration and features, not stealing a style, and this world has persons who need to learn that. :/ As you know. Possibly someones think that even a photo is something what's always free to use because it's not drawn or painted; as a photographer I've finally understood that I could get pissed off if I see someone stealing my photos and using them for their own without permissions. Art is all what needs skills to be done well, and skills are... personal. So, art is personal, and art is possible to steal. Then I could think that if anyone steals your art, then they steal your personal life. Horrific. (Huuuuge text... I should write these to my blog!)
I doodled some of my not-so-known ratty characters (side guys in my serie) yesterday and learned random, new coloring style and used refs. It was interesting, although I needed few hours to find good pics. Still I think that you can't simply tell what pics I used, because my characters can have colors and other things what do not exist in rats (horse colors... because those chars are so old). The most needed help was about anatomy, positions and shading. (Learned yet more how weird rats are, they can have bodybuilder bodies under their loooooose skin and fur... It's ridiculous how a looong piece of muscle and fur can be shortened to two times shorter stack of fat and wrinkles: shangyu.deviantart.com/art/May… , pinkpoodle543.deviantart.com/a… OK, the second one is male, but not that sturdy as I have seen them to be very often. I tried to show this with similar rats enough. Really, really sturdy males are REALLY sturdy, like some plush animals. I only didn't find good examples with standard ears.) With horses that can't happen so well... Heha. But the idea of using a ref is that. People need to know that the animal, who is fluffy and has a lot of skin and wrinkles, have still same anatomy under that as their species-mates have and who can be a bit skinnier. That's awesome for me. (And that every animal's limbs start really from closed to their spine...)
I could do the same if I could live with horses, because I have nothing practical to do with them. I wish I could. Still have photographed them at my sister's workplace, as she works in a trotter stable. But possibly my perfectionist personality and eyesight helps a lot, and because I take photos when I can. Can see practically many things what never have explained in any book! The palpating is familiar to me with cats and dog, as I live with both and they are friendly for touch. They have learned me that I love big, fat cats and skinny and muscular dogs, both in a healthy way of course. With horse I have no more opinions than I dislike shows and races (and bits, dressage, etc popular)... And I like a lot our country's own horse breed here, what's very unknown around the world.
That could be the only one good thing in zombies, in fact, if they were real thing (who could be sure, hey?)! x) Roaming anatomy map, what a thing!
Now this was the longest mumble I've written for a while in dA! 8D Got few hours maybe. Now need a shower and my midsummer celebration (Juhannus) is over.

Yeah the containers are really good, and seal well to keep the epoxy fresh. They won't start curing until you mix both parts together (in which you have an hour or two to play around with before it gets crumbly) so it's pretty awesome. It is expensive, it's $35 (31.3 Eur) for one pound of clay (you get both Part A and Part B though) but it's worth it. It lasts a while (I've had mine for over a year) so you really don't need anything larger unless you plan to do a lot of larger original sculptures with it haha
In my personal experience, I find English to be friendlier on the horse's back. For one, Western saddles are heavy as all hell. Mine are about 20 pounds (9 kilo) but my trainer had one that was 60 pounds (27.2 kilo). That's additional weight to you and anything you load up in saddle bags, so that horse is carrying a hell of a lot. Not to mention many people don't know or understand the purpose of the bits they use on the horse and therefore use a bit that's too severe and misuse it. (So many people just yank the horse's head everywhere. I don't know if you've seen any American westerns, but you can see how uncomfortable the horses are - their mouths are wide open trying to drop the bit, their heads are tossing, they're being yanked, etc). Westerns are a poor example since actual western horsemen SHOULD know their horses and what is comfortable for them, but unfortunately so many backyard owners here have little to no riding skill or experience and base themselves off of what they saw in westerns growing up.
Plus you don't post to the trot and if you don't know how to sit the trot, you're slamming against your horse's back. You ride with incredibly long stirrups so if you're used to English you might lose your balance unless you've done a lot of bareback or stirrup-less work. You really don't get off your horse's back for anything except if you're galloping in competitions like Barrel races. Out on rides though, you sit the canter and gallop and half the people don't lean forward at the gallop so the horse has to carry their weight and travel fast at the same time while the air is dragging against them.
I prefer English because it's lighter, and the riders are generally friendlier on the horse. They post the trot so the horse can keep balanced, they sometimes stand at the canter depending on how they were trained (I personally sit but I can balance at the canter. When the horse opens up into a half-gallop up through a gallop is when I get off his back) and of course they get off his back at the gallop. The Snaffle is our best friend and most of us don't use severe bits if the horse works well in a basic snaffle. Here in America, in shows, if your horse is 7 years old or older and you're showing western, you HAVE to use a curb bit. You can't use a snaffle at all. A curb is more severe than a snaffle. My friend was complaining about it like "If your horse is working well in a snaffle and is old enough to understand how riding works, why do you need to use a severe bit?" I agree with her, I call bullshit on that. That's not good horsemanship.
Both of my horses were happier in English than they were in western so I guess take that for what you will haha (Don't get me wrong, I still ride and love both, I just prefer English because we're all happier in it)
If you ever find yourself with some money and want a saddle for your rider, let me know I'd be willing to make one! It would be $35 USD minimum (cost of supplies) but I'm absolutely willing to make a set for you
I'd also find the smallest way to ship it all so it'll be easy on the international shipping costs.
All glues unless they're for children are "harmless to skin." The only time I've been uncomfortable with glue was when I got super glue and baking soda on my fingers (as I do a lot when I'm repositioning plastic and stuff since it's stronger than the initial plastic.) The baking soda causes a chemical reaction in the super glue and makes it heat up when it does (setting it instantly) so I've burnt my fingers a few times doing that. Now it's just a minor discomfort but at first it was like getting hot-melt glue on my fingers.
The smallest tack I've made was a couple of nylon foal halters for traditional scale foals. (they fit classic scale horses as well). I don't like working in really small scale because there's too much room to mess up haha
I'm constantly losing my tools so I buy new ones all the time. But knives especially, as soon as I can't skive leather the blade is dead to me. So I'm constantly replacing blades for my scalpel or buying new knives altogether. I have two handles and about 20 blades combined. I also have a box cutter that I occasionally use to skive and have 10 double-sided blades for it so I can use it quite a lot.
Oh I really love the bags! I want to make saddlebags for my western set but I have to get more skiving leather so I can. Really good job!!
7 USD is about 6.2 Eur. The cast bits can be expensive, yes, and I've found it easier to just make my own as well. You can buy silver jump rings in the jewellery section and then get a soldering iron and create the little eggbutt where the ring closes, to create a bit. It's a hell of a lot cheaper. But if you want a pelham or weymouth, it's only $2.50 (2.2 Eur) for it which looks a lot better than wire. I think they come in a sheet of multiples but I don't know
I personally use dental wax as sticky wax. It's cleaner and holds a lot better, and I got it for free from my dentist XD
Everything I've done in this hobby was self-taught (and really in anything other than real horses, but there's a fine line with the horses as there are some things I taught myself due to lack of money for an instructor. I did eventually get proper training but I taught myself the basics.)
Oh wow! no, I'm not familiar with her works but I love her style!
Yeah exactly, I was terrified of anything loud after that XD Still am!
Exactly what I was saying, referencing and drawing from reference is absolutely acceptable. I do it all the time because I'm familiarising myself with the real horse's anatomy in that pose. But tracing or just blatantly stealing someone's work is just that - stealing. It's illegal in the USA and I'm sure in other countries. It's immoral and I don't understand the appeal.
Actually, one thing I'd love to do when I get the facilities is rehabilitate emaciated horses. While they're just lingering around I'd be sitting there drawing them. There's the real anatomy map!

I know one Finn who started their own OSC with Apoxie, and I am not wondered if she someday posts something unbelievable. The project model isn't so big but still.
30 eur isn't bad if the stuff is as good as it should, as we know. Even for me, who sees everywhere some reasons to save money. But I really want to custom/finish those customs someday, what I have kept for years...
I've never really used western saddles in any way, so I can't know the weight... Wow. My own style to ride is to keep my balance and disturb as less as possible the horse, as I know that they shake their heads a lot if I keep reins. My own reason, I'm not a "real" rider because of possibilities. And this country can't understand persons who like only to be with horses but not to USE them someway...
I've seen alot of USA horsemanship (or "horsemanship"), thanks to those Finnish model horsiers who linked everything from YouTube to our forum, when the forum and group yet were alive. That practically opened whole new world to me, and I started to think ethics in life with horses; western SHOULD be relaxed and peaceful, but I have seen both bad things: those badly yanked ones with bad riders, and those show QHs who just walk like zombies because their blood is drained off a bit to get the horses to be tired... And all this only because of some metal bowl and/or money; not all are that, no, but too many. It's happening even in Finland, what's the last country on earth what should breed show animals and work animals in same breed but different lines! that's why I hate modern dressage and show riding.
The best way I know to sit is to use a vaulting belt and saddlepad. Then your feet are free and you can't just trust to stirrups, you must learn to trust your own body and the horse - thanks of that for one woman who trained me a bit when I was... 13? The "trainer" called it as classic riding, what means that you teach the horse for voice and weight, not to whips, feet and bits. At first I learned to use bitless bridles, and I think that I should try that same when I see her and the horse again (I hope it happens).
One noticeable thing is still that the first horse with saddlepad was quite fat, and easy to ride. Second one was my friend's favorite horse with clear spine and huge hay belly; fat and nothing like a sport horse. It makes a lot of differences, but I still like to feel the horse although it vould be more difficult.
So riding the trot differs between western and english a lot? Have never ridden western, so.
That's one thing I can't understand. In every place they seem to think, that at first they teach the foal without bits, and when it's OK... Then they put some metal in the mouth or something softer, and when the foal is fine with it, they fill the mouth with curb bits and chains. I just can't see any idea in that - if the horse moves well and is good without any metal never in his mouth, why the toe you should put any bits for him? Any show isn't a reason for that... I am generally just against bits in real horses, have read a lot of the harms what can happen with bits (it depends a lot of the rider, but it's not possible that it's ONLY the rider - the used tools can say always something of the problem, as I have never heard that any horse could hurt their mouths without bits.) I personally ma so bad rider that I hope that I could ride mostly bitless ans saddleless, it's most good for me also. I try to keep reins as long always, so i don't think that I could hurt the horse that much still. Should see it then, but I can do nothing for this and the stupid culture called "you can't ride/drive a horse without bits! What? If you want to race with him you need bits!" alias 'horsemen' who say that bitless riding is fake riding. It is not.
I think that both, english and western, are so good as the rider knows how to ride them; I still adore classic riding mostly. The riders ruin the style, not horses and not the style itself (generally... I can't understand saddleseat neither, they seem nothing healthy for me. Only stupid horseback breaking and yanking).
I must think that... Who knows? If you can make a black leather saddle, it could be good. Then I should create some black bridles for my PAM because she's the first horse I think that could be the "official" horsie for the set. (Nothing decided yet!) It's good that you have the same rider there, easy for testing.
Ouch... I try to do things too easy. Once burned fingers with hot water because I tried to blend those Schleichs, but it never happened because my patience... Hot water is still less dangerous (if it's not VERY hot) as those chemicals, huh, I think. Hot melt glue is still familiar, mostly in good ways (I WANT to finish my Little Bit scale stable).
That's the reason why I do very simple personal halters for Schleichs, they can't get "normal" halters but arab type. I in fact wonder why it's not so common type of halter in daily use as it looks really easy, and sometimes someones don't close the throatlatch in normal stable halters (they should...). In traditional scale I like to do mostly those normal halters, as arab type halters are quite boring, only.
Woah, I have used only the first one now, and it was surprisingly well working; I don't throw them off but use for something else - sculpting - when the blade doesn't cut leather anymore. But I had that first one in use possibly an year or more, I have no idea. My favorite tool in some ways because of knives, and because I like sharp tools what can cut stuff. (I have one old knife also, but it's adopted from school and I use it for things what aren't so good for the knife; to save the good one.)
I don't skive the leather (I understood that it's "thinning", making the leather to be less thick) personally, except the strap tips because I have a problem called too soft/flexible strap tips and unfriendly buckles. I thin them and then glue to keep their shape on, it's also friendly for the leather... Still have no idea how stupid it sounds for you who do the tack to look more detailed and careful... Haha.
I can do mini bags if you want (or if you are lazy, but I guess you're not). But then it needs to be known that I can't do the symmetry to be perfect; have tried super hardly and I always fail them if I do the bag to have more shape inside. And my lovely glue even gives me possibilities to open the "wound" and try again, but still I fail. (The glue needs still a lot of power and risks to do that.) I am quite surprised every time I see that I haven't posted these mini bags almost anywhere, only few photos...
Soldering, woaa. Familiar (almost). Very pity that I had only an year in metalworks and so. Still buying some bits from USA to Finland sounds very, uhm, dangerous or not-so-clever in some way; if I can do them myself (one little bag of that stuff pays few euros, so it's much cheaper to do them from jewellery spikes). I've tried to create some good bits from metal wire, but my only one problem is that their shape is too different, and then I lost my interest on them. And because I have already so much bits done. (I can also do red bits... Not my favorite color and nothing realistic anyway, but still, it looks a bit interesting when a red leather has also red metal pieces!)
Hmm I could ask that when I go to dentist second time. They have a lot of interesting tools and materials what could be some type of drugs for miniaturists. (Fun pic: afuze.deviantart.com/art/Finge… )
Just same words, although I never had any "instructor" in anything, if it's not the model horse forum here. It really helped me a lot. In fact that person I linked was one who told a lot of good fact! Her style is amazing; got some artistic features from it years ago, and I think you can see it even yet... (Some old examples but not too old:
afuze.deviantart.com/art/Heppa…
afuze.deviantart.com/art/Heppa… )
One of my favorites by her: koni.weebly.com/uploads/7/0/9/… Love that zombie-ish look, it's one reason why I love akhal tekes so much today. That person is the first model horsier ever what I "knew", if I can say it like that - I found her website and my interest in this hobby springed. It was possibly one of the most important things what happened in my life. Of course...
It's natural, as the fear of loud voices is species-specific to humans. And still I see too much workers who work without ANY safety equimpent (hey, protection glasses are easier to put on than cleaning the eye when there's piece of glass or wood...) although they always recommend to use those. I'm so scared of hurting my eyes and fingers, that I MUST wear protection glasses... No matter if I use Dremel or anything else, if it has fastly moving parts it needs to be used only with protection. I am so happy of having my own stuff to make my life easier; people always crab how they hurted their eye or finger or toe when they worked, but ehm...
When I once (and more than once) asked my friend "why you always get a pic from internet but never draw all yourself?" they then answer: "I can't draw from imagination, I need model!" They think that they learn only with model... In fact not, it just teaches people to get depend from another artist's works (they rarely use photos... Aaargh) and they never get their really own works. I could use Note for this to tell more details, if you want. Could be interesting. I get disturbed when I see clearly overdrawn pics in internet, and people don't tell that "screenshot used" or anything they used in it. For someones, it seems to be that if it's publicly shown thing and possible to buy, it has no copyrights; in fact it's just vice versa... Because those animated characters and others are never just started to exist, they have all their own creators who had some hard work with designing. And then someone goes and... You know. Steals it, changes some features and so. In a parody and when the original copyrights are well said closed to the pic, it can be OK, but personally I could not like if I find my characters as very different as they should be. Some funny differences could exist, but if I say that "that feature X is something I can't imagine with this character", then I really mean it.
(You know, this world is filled with fan stories what have changed characters to gays and whatever. I don't mean that gays are wrong - they are normal people and there's nothing wrong with them - but that's just too popular change in chars what aren't originally that. No more brains to make something really different?)
That would be great: same moment you take care of someone and make art! The pics could be also great way to do memories.
Now it's time for tea! Stolen one plastic box from my mother to make it to be a mini terrarium, so now my biggest problem is that I can't find any tape here... Hehehe.

He arrived today, and HOLY CRAP I'M IN LOVE. So many tiny details that didn't show up in the photos!! I love that you really took real life horse anatomy into account when resculpting him - all the bones are in all the right places. He did suffer a broken ear in transit, but that's nothing my good friend super glue couldn't fix! He's a truly fantastic piece and I'm so bringing him out to the show ring this summer - thanks again!

I'm so sorry to hear about the broken ear! I tried packing him with that in mind (I'm always afraid the re-sculpted ears are going to break since epoxy isn't as flexible as plastic), but I'm glad you could fix it! I'm so happy you love him, he's definitely one of my most prided creations! I tried putting as much anatomical and minute detail into him as I could to really bring him to life. Or... Un...life... XD Let me know how he does at the show! We don't have shows here so I've always been curious how my work would place You're very welcome! Maybe in the future you can bring home a lady friend for him?
Hahaha enjoy!

No worries on the break - things just happen in transit, and I was very impressed with your pack job! Always good to see a mummified horse, haha. I will totally keep you updated, it's looking like my next show will be in mid-May and it has a custom fantasy division so we should be good. I'm not sure if you're familiar with the zombie custom "Omen" by Pale Horse Studios (he's on dA here: palehorsestudios.deviantart.co… ) but I own him too, so this guy is currently hanging out with him in one of my horse cabinets. I'm sure they'd love a lady to fight over eventually.

Haha thank you! People seem to like my pack jobs. After having a wing break in transit so many years ago, it's been my duty in life to make sure they're packed really well. Even won an egg-dropping contest in school because of it haha Packed a raw egg wrapped in tons of bubble wrap into a bubble wrap-lined shoe box and dropped it from a flight of stairs. Had a hard landing, but the egg was in pristine condition. I figured why not do that with model horses, too? So far it's stayed true! Well, with the occasional broken ear thanks to their brittleness Still haven't figured out how to prevent that. Maybe one day!
That sounds amazing! Can't wait to hear how he does! Ah yes, Omen! He was actually my inspiration and motivation to create zombies. At least he's in good company! Well, for now - the pretty lady will come along soon enough and ruin that friendship

It depends on the extent of the sculptwork. A horse with wounds like Pestilence from RDR would be around $75, whereas a horse like the undead horse from RDR (anything that needs extensive dremel work and clay) would be close to $160 or more. It also depends on if you want the pose changed and to what extent you want that done, and whether or not you'll be supplying the model/I already have the model. Basically just design a horse or find a design you like and send it to me and I can give you a quote. I'm also open to trades and part-trades of equal or similar value depending on what's offered, so don't be afraid to ask
