I knew that you'd start making blades soon enough, everyone that makes excellent armor does eventually...
This is an excellent looking blade, can't wait to see the finished product.

No complaints here. It would be nice to find a 'hammer in' somewhere nearby heh

Very cool! You should record yourself working, I'd love to see the process. (...'cause I want to make swords, too....)

When'd you start metal work?
Nice blade, reminds me of hadhafang. Single edged or double?

I've been interested in the field for years.

So the the point and a 40 cm back from the tip of the blade is double edged. Nice style of weapon, personally I prefer single edged weapons over all.

Looks like the same steps my dad takes when he grinds a blade. Same steps he takes when he forges one too, after the shape is pounded in that is.
This will be a lovely and well made blade. I can't wait to see what the guard, grip and pommel look like on it.

Cool, what sort of stuff does your dad make?
Thanks : )

Well, the main question would be what doesn't he make. He is a master bladesmaith and makes stuff from carving blades, folding pocket knives, daggers, swords and such. He does not make curved oriental blades though as he does not like doing so.

I take it that it'll be purely aesthetic? I can't imagine raw bar-stock would be anywhere near as durable as forged... especially after the stresses of grinding.

Azmal In reply to Argentum-Mane [2010-01-24 13:51:37 +0000 UTC]
Well, there are a number of misconceptions concerning metallurgy and sword making but a blade's strength will come from the heat treat (ground or forged) and forging doesn't make a blade better than modern steels. Also in reality any blades forged these days are going to be forged from bar stock anyhow. So long story short, this will be the real deal when it's all said and done, aesthetic and functional.

Sweet! I used to make blades using the same method about 29 years ago. Lots of time grinding, refining, and filing before tempering the final blade and building the hilt and binding that. Will you be shaping the hand guard and pommel in the same manner? If so, rock on!

Was it difficult doing the multilevel part of the blade? I haven't quite wrapped that part around my head yet. I don't suppose there are any short cuts to achieve the backbone part.

Azmal In reply to Seenshadows [2010-01-25 03:04:32 +0000 UTC]
yeah, really not any short cuts. I've tried various things though but it usually ends up causing more work.
