Hey, world:
As my fellow Crimeans are beginning to celebrate the first anniversary of the historical Crimean Referendum , I am writing this for whoever takes his time to read it.
On this very day one year ago, I took part in the aforesaid referendum, and let me tell you it was the most democratic event I had ever seen. Back then I thought it was mainly about leaving one country and joining another. But now that we have witnessed all the horror and atrocities of the war in what used to be Ukraine, I realize the referendum was about so much more.
In fact, by voting to reunify with Russia, we, an overwhelming majority of Crimeans, FREELY CHOSE
PEACE over WAR
LIFE over DEATH
TRUTH over LIES
DIGNITY over SHAME
RESPECT over HUMILIATION
STABILITY over CHAOS
DEFENSE over HELPLESSNESS
and the list goes on and on…
In closing, I’ll say this to you: if we could go back in time one year, both I and every Crimean I know, would still partake in the referendum and vote for the reunification with Russia.
No regrets.
