Description

“СЮЙРЕНЬСКАЯ КРЕПОСТЬ”
СЮЙРЕНСЬКА ФОРТЕЦЯ
“SÜYREN QALESI”

The medieval fortress Suyren (a.k.a. Suyrenskaya, Shivarin, Scivarin) on cape Kulle-Burun (“tower cape”) between the gorge Isar-Altyn-Dere and the Belbek River valley above the village of Bolshoye Sadovoye in the Bakhchysarai Raion of the Republic of Crimea , Russia. Built circa VI—VII cc. by the Byzantines together with the fortresses of Mangup-Kale and Eski-Kermen, the Suyren Fortress guarded approaches to the town of Doros (Mangup)—the capital of the Principality of Theodoro —and controlled the ancient road that led from the Inner Range of the Crimean Mountains to the South Coast of Crimea via Mountain Ai-Petri . Still standing is the 10-meter-tall tower along with what remains of the defensive walls faced with cut stone and rubble masonry fill.

I like how some of those inked branches are almost swirled around to form near circular shapes, just like the feathery clouds made with pastel are formed from almost half moon shapes. A nice but complimentary contrast.

And the edge of the road is basically also forming a half moon shape, but faced in the opposite direction. I only now noticed that. I don't know if that contributes to the harmonic feel from that picture composition, but I remember my art teachers talking about bringing dynamic and coherency into a work by using shapes and forms that "rhyme". That could apply here as well.

Anyway, your way with lines and ink always brings movement into landscapes that would otherwise look still and calm. It livens them up. And the way you make the light visible through that stark contrast between light and shady side on that castle ruin is stunning!

You are such a great writer! It's amazing how much you were able to see in this landscape of mine, probably more than I saw in it myself) Thing is, with so many years and so many drawings behind me, I no longer give it that much thought when drawing or painting new pieces, all because it all comes naturally and seemingly effortlessly. And now your perfectly worded comment reminded me of the fact that there's so much work, experience, and little artistic tricks behind this "ease". Thank you!

Thanks! You're welcome. And you are a great landscape artist!

I see what you mean by not giving it that much thought while working. I don't really think that much about those little things I mentioned either while I'm still working on my pieces. Maybe a little bit, but most of those thoughts come later when viewing the finished work with a little more distance. So yeah, those tricks becoming second nature until you just have a feeling of what works without having to think consciously about it is something I'm becoming familiar with myself.

Yet when I'm writing a comment on someone else's work I like to give words to what exactly it is I like about their piece, and then... I'm starting to think about those tricks and artistic skills consciously again.
