Description Well.. this one is so far diferent than the other one that I'm going to submit a new one instead of overwritting the old one...

Need some criticism.. on the model, not the cheesey checkered floor

---------------

Edit - oh yeah.. got him down to 1096 poly's from the earlier 3500

-----
Edit - Ok, yeah.. he's floating above the ground, but at least I got him underwater. Will need to work on lighting and some murk for the water.

--------------
Edit 3/30/04
got a few rocks, a water surface, murky water, and a few weeds. Tons more to do and still learning. Still not satisfied with his skin.

CTHULHU! CTHULHU COMING FOR MY SOUUUUL! O.o;;;;;

...or just a reallly really awesome octopus... I love this! IT'S GETTIN' FAVED!

Any chance you can change the colors easily at this point in the process? Because this would be absolutely ripping animation of cephalopod chormataphores if you made it change throught a cycle of colors, using a dot-by-dot system then emphasized the curves of the figure... I dunno anything about 3-D creation, though, so making a color animation out if it is probably fool's babbling... Gomen nasai!

Sorry I never comment... school = killing me. Rock on, and I'll be back often, I hope!

Ps: Sorry, I still owe you a picture of Sonic the Hedgehog for your daughter.

Didn't there used to be more octy in the picture? Is he further over to the left?

You know I'm gonna end up faving this when it's finally done, so take your time making it look good. I'm happy to see you working on it.

no!! I like the original octy and now I'm a bit obsessed. Don't give him girlfriend! He's meant to be alone...

Ok ok, any requests on what you would like to see happen to this scene?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

diamondscan In reply to bakasama [2004-03-31 20:52:05 +0000 UTC]

Well, you definitely need to add some little fishies throughout the picture. Some orange ones in the foreground would be nice, small ones of course and then some more further back in the scene.

Mabye a shark in the background? Some coral and some more tiny plants in front of the rock on the right, it's rather plain right now. Pebbles on the ground, specially by the rock behind the octopus. Maybe a sorta large fish peeking out behind the rock in the background. A stingray far back at the top, right before the ripples start, but not in the ripples, because that would look strange.

The ripples need a little fixing now too. Like the center needs to be further up, so the ocean doesn't look like it's folding on itself. If you changed the ripples more, it might look cool the stingray was blocking out some of the light coming down...

The octopus could use some more defintion, shade changes in the skin, some splotching, smoothing out, etc... Maybe on the right foreground, in the corner where the sand is, have some of those little worms (really tiny ones) poking out of the sand...

----------------
Okay, that's all I can think of. I know it sounds like a lot, and it is. But details make a picture so much cooler, and you don't have to do it all in poser, a lot of those things you could start drawing in photoshop (like the pebbles, coral, octo skin, etc...) Hope this helps!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

bakasama In reply to diamondscan [2004-04-01 01:51:45 +0000 UTC]

just kidding, I'll certainly try to pull off as much of that as possible. I'm using max instead of poser by the way

I'm trying to do it ALL in max instead of any photoshop trying to force myself to learn as much as I can.

looks nice! ooooh...the vast depths and space of the underwater realms...oooooo! better than i could do.

as for the octy...i think it looks fine. just remember, "they're not shiny when underwater." he needs suckers. lots and lots of suckers.

OceanStorme [2004-03-30 15:29:14 +0000 UTC]

Yay! He's back! And damn, he looks evil!

I love the environment thus far. Still would love to see a sunken something. Like a ship or something. The lighting somehow seems to make sense with how bright you have it on the surface, the depth of the water, and the lighting on his skin. I agree the shadow is too clear and perhaps the tentacles could be thicker. I love the positioning of the tentacles though and how the one is extended to the right. Very cool. The color is neat too, I don't think it has to be SUPER realistic in every aspect.

Hmm. He almost looks mad, like he's looking for someone. Kind of a "I'll get you you little brat!" kind of feeling. Like he just got egged or something by a neighborhood brat. That's just me rambling.

Oh! A joke! Alex told me this one!

Q: What's an octopus's favorite song?

Groxx [2004-03-30 15:07:06 +0000 UTC]

okay, crits...
Tentacles are too thin (look at an octo, you'll see), and the webbing-whatever between them is FAR too thick. Usually it's incredibly thin.
The shadows are much too sharp... getting a sharp shadow underwater is next to impossible

now then... nice job I like it's color, however unrealistic it is. A sunken tie fighter or something would be hilarious, especially if the pilot is floating above it, tethered by a tube Like one of those weird diving toys in fish tanks

glitzz [2004-03-30 11:11:55 +0000 UTC]

Actually I like the brightness on the surface. Maybe you could try adding some rays of light coming through?

Plus maybe add a few things in the background, like some distant fish? Just some suggestions. Don't evenknow if that's possible , because I'm really bad at using 3D programs

But I think the basic idea so far is really cool. The depth in this image is created nicely already!

the horizon on that scene is too bright, needs to be darker towards the bottom. Other than that no problems so far, I am a Marine Bio nut so I would complain about your colors but I will not .

bakasama In reply to vangelis13 [2004-03-25 20:26:52 +0000 UTC]

By all means, complain away, I need something to do with this scene.

vangelis13 In reply to bakasama [2004-03-25 20:51:41 +0000 UTC]

I think for the quality of the water scene you put together, you should make realistic textures for the octopus. Eyes and body should have an almost stucco type pattern, based upon photos if you want I can scan some in I have a book with a few images. and if you get the chance there are some interesting things that you could do to make vegetation, point here is to break up the ground surface. Like I said I like the image but it needs more.

bakasama In reply to vangelis13 [2004-03-26 13:40:01 +0000 UTC]

I would really appreciate a good reference photo. I looked around for some time but didn't find anything that satisfied me. I still need some sort of action happening in this scene though.. Thats my main stumbling block right now.

i love this 'pussy render.. the tentacles are just right now. good work on the scene too. are you planning to put in some sea weed and bubbles.. and maybe some flakes floating around to build up more atmosphere. you can make a lot out of this scene.. i really like this work

I like the model, although the eye might do with some blending- its so dark. Also, the shape you made him is conducive to movement. It looks kinda like he's trying to get away from something. Going up probably. Maybe squirting ink :]

No, the floating is very cool. Add some swishy waterness and I think it will be done. It's looking awesome. I'm so impressed that you could create this. I'm terrible with 3d programs. Did you ever say what program you used?

AzureWitch [2004-03-05 19:44:48 +0000 UTC]

Hey, if you wanna enhance that underwater feel, ripple his shadow. Otherwise, nice shading and stuff, and the octopus himself is looking much better. I like the color you picked.

Wow! I love how this is turning out! I love his skin! Did you do the texture and shellac?

You also need seaweed bits and maybe some shells. Or a big thing. Like a sunken something. With a nice dark shape. Do I make sense? LOL, time for more coffee!
