Description
So yeah... I don't really like the idea of making tutorials, cause they always end up so lacking, but I've been asked by some folks, so I made a... thing. There's just TONS of stuff I feel I should get in to in far more detail, but to keep it on one page some serious amputation is needed! Anyway, FUNDAMENTALS, FUNDAMENTALS, FUNDAMENTALS. You can't learn the fun things before learning the boring things! Also, pardon my bad English. I'm sure there's some words in there that could have been different...

*late reply is late* This is a pretty awful tutorial and I'm probably gonna delete it soon, so remember to save it Β

Thanks for the heads up ^^
I still like this tutorial, it's a great starting point to just try and experiment with how it could be done. Something to start, you know? But I certainly wouldn't mind if you are to make a better one

This would help me a LOT with different angles of the turtle heads.

This was a very helpful tutorial indeed! I wish it had a couple more steps, especially around the eyes, but I love it all the same! I also attempted to use it in order to draw my own TMNT OCs and wanted to share with you what I created, though I followed the tutorial - at least I thought I did - step-by-step, not one of mine had the same position/posture as each other or even this tutorial, is that strange?

I'm glad you found it useful And that you didn't just copy the poses in it shows that you are using it the right way: as a guide, not a flat-out reference. Remember to check out some of the books on the bottom of the tut if you are interested in learning more

Ah, it's heart-warming to see that you use the exact same process as I do. The only difference is that you keep the shape of the head more spherical.

Yay! Learning to think in 3 dimensions while drawing is the most useful skill out there. The teacher in me always gets a tiny tad annoyed when ever I see "Draw a turtle" tutorial (or any tutorial, for that matter) that focuses on flat shapes/lines, they basically teach you to copy a head from one angle :/ I'm not saying that this tutorial is genius, it isn't! But I just wanted to get a point across...

Nuuuh, it's super-lacking! You probably draw analytically already, so it depends how much this would help, heh...
(If you get the chance, get your greasy paws on that Michael Hampton book, it's pretty awesome!)

WRONG It's nice to see how others approach drawing the turtles, becaauuuse I feel like every time I draw a head, its like...floating above their neck
Idk, I'm lazy with their anatomy; I really need to nail it down haha
That book actually sounds kind of perfect for my classes and personal work, so I'm definitely going to look for it~

This is great! I might give it a try but I suck at circles and lines and following instruction lol i just look and draw >_<
π: 0 β©: 1
Baraturts In reply to ClotiPheebs [2013-10-03 01:37:48 +0000 UTC]
Remember, you are only supposed to draw the guide lines very loosely, I kind of exaggerated it a bit in those step-by-steps. The other two poses shows better how I use this technique (and even those are more "refined" then my usual routine). The blue sketch is just very loose and quick, but it's essential for me when I draw, makes everything 10 times easier! When you get used to drawing more analytically, it becomes a very useful habit But if you don't have much fundamental knowledge, I'd rather advice you to pic up some books by the first three authors I mentioned (some are available online) and give them a try. It's always hard and feels boring in the beginning, but when some basic skills are acquired it suddenly becomes fun!

Was looking at this again as I've been sketching randomly lol but I wanted to ask you what do you use to draw? I see most people use Sai more often then pencil

Baraturts In reply to ClotiPheebs [2013-10-16 22:12:37 +0000 UTC]
Well, if you take a look at the first drawings I posted here, they are done with good old fashioned paper, coloring pencils, markers and water colors But I'll admit that after getting SAI, I've kind of gotten addicted... >_> It's very easy to learn compared to Photoshop and MUCH cheaper! (tho less features, but you can have Gimp that's free and similar to Photoshop on the side). In addition it's very light-weight, so it works great without lag on less powerful computers.Β
However, to be able to work intuitively and easily with SAI, you also need a tablet. I first started with a rather cheap Genius MousePen, but it was pretty crappy, really... Wacom's are the best, but they are a little pricey. (I now have a Wacom Intuos 5 Medium, which I absolutely love!) But there's starting to come some good cheaper brands like Monoprice and Huion (or something like that). Medium is the perfect size, no matter brand! Small is just that... too small. And Large is huge, will take up a lot of desk-space and be rather cumbersome.

I've seen your older works loved the colored pencil effect ^_^ My hubby has been offering to get me Sai so that's another reason I was asking lol just not sure its worth it though all my favorite artists (you included lol) I see are using it and love it or are addicted to it haha

Baraturts In reply to ClotiPheebs [2013-10-16 22:39:38 +0000 UTC]
If you ask me, it's definitively worth it! It's great value for your money It's probably going to be a bit confusing to begin with, but look up some tutorials here and on Youtube and you'll get in to it pretty fast and never look back! But remember to get an okay tablet, it's alpha and omega!Β

Haha yea my pos tablet wouldn't do its slow as it is. I plan on getting a new tablet anyways so this will give me a good reason why ^_^ I love sketching but my scanner ruins the sketches and my camera is just ugh

Good scans/photo's are a ever lasting problem with traditional media >< So if you're going to draw stuff only to show it online anyway, then digital is the way to go!

For anyone into drawingΒ comic-art and superheroes, that is one of the go-to books! And I'd like to add "Writing for Comics With Peter David" for those into the writing aspect. My personal fave for comic-writing. And he's a great writer himself....

Ooh, yes- DO!! I don't have that one myself, but it's one I've been wanting for a while, too. I LOVE Stan, and even entered into a competition last year for a chance to co-write a web-comic with him. Too bad I didn't win....
