Description
The Anglisc Ríce timeline is an alternate history in which a pagan, Anglo-Saxon-inspired state occupies the place of the United Kingdom. The first Ríceswærd (head of state) of the newly-established Anglisc Ríce was Osric Albertson Thegn, who was by nature a radical traditionalist. Wishing to have a cavalry escort for state visits and other occasions of high ceremony, he entrusted Major Léofric Wayneson of the Supreme Defence Command's uniform directorate with the task of designing a suitable costume. The brief called for a uniform suitable for high pageantry and redolent of Anglo-Saxon tradition, but also one which was economical to produce in the straitened economic circumstances of the newborn Ríce. Major Léofric hit upon the idea of re-using the stock of old British Household Cavalry uniforms which had been lying forgotten in a warehouse since the late 1970s. The tight-fitting riding breeches, burnished cuirass, tall leather boots and white gauntlets could simply be re-used without alteration, while the tunic would be dyed Housecarl grey with black facings. Major Léofric's most ingenious flourish was to propose welding a nickel-plated eyepiece to the helmets, thereby recreating the appearance of historic Anglo-Saxon "goggle" helmets. Thegn Osric received the proposal warmly, and the uniforms would have been worn by a 300-strong mounted contingent of the Ríceswærd's Hirth, the inner élite of the Housecarls. However, economic problems and the low priority of the work meant that the project was still in its infancy when Thegn Osric died in 2004.
Thegn Osric's successor as Ríceswærd, Thegn Aldred, was much less impressed. One of the few things he despises more than horses is the memory of the British monarchy, and the idea of clothing any of his men in uniforms inherited from its household troops, and redolent of its traditions, horrified him. Additionally, the historic appearance of the design sat poorly with his preference for sober, functional and utilitarian dress. Not even the Saxon-style eyepieces with their nod to his ideology could redeem it in his eyes: "my Housecarls are ----ing soldiers", he is said to have explained, "not ----ing extras in some ----ing Lord of the Rings film." And that was the end of that.
