I take a photograph or two, some of them of people I know, then create a black and white canvas where I copy/paste shapes I cut from the original. I use layer filters to give the weaving effects, but I also draw a few layers and create a few shapes along the way. I use the Exclusion filter, which gives a great effect with black and white layers. The rest is all guesswork. I don't stop until I can see personification in each respective element.

i'm glad you explained that. now i can see the image in layers which helps me to add the spatial depth in my mind... if that makes any sense -shrug-
