Description Rise in Shade : Prelude

"Burning myself from the inside-out is and always has been like preparation for whichever Hell happens to be real - in the event that the living one isn't simply the only one.

"They say you've got only one life to live. Well what happens when you get through with yours? When you've had enough? I've drawn my own conclusions that you can't just take the chicken-shit way out. Determination is survival and you've simply got to wait around to see what else is going to get thrown at you." The cancer-paper flaked as the woman put her lips around the cigarette, pulling a drag deep into her chest and filling her with noxious fumes. She spoke to the crackling flames around her, as if she understood something of the longevity they lacked. She'd gone through it twice now - ending - and it was no picnic to come back from the dead.

Although she was somewhat resilient in build, her face was composed of features that were both unique and beautiful. Only the way her skin held a white-hot glow - her hazelnut eyes swirled like the embers of the burning warehouse - she appeared rather otherworldly. Even her hair was many auburn hues, blending together like the saturated yellow, orange and red around her.

As if the backdrop of the crimson flames was in tune to her very existence, she'd watched eagerly as they were coaxed up into the burning rafters while smoke pillowed from the many broken windows around the top of the warehouse walls. The opened garage door was only to allow her to keep sight of the two dead people; both men dead, burning, and tied back-to-back in the middle of the searing heat. Fused together by the fire, she watched as their souls trickled out together to whichever fitting Hell awaited them.

"You'll be determined so long as you've got more to burn," she continued, "and perhaps that's why I've carried on no matter how much it hurts or how much I've had." She turned around, lowering her head and the radiance of her flesh as she stepped away from the burning wreckage. With one quick movement, using the back of her sleeve she wiped at the side of her face and slipped the cigarette away from her mouth between two fingers.

"There's still some fuel left in the fire."
