Description
Northward BoundThe pitter patter of snow sounded through the ghost of a village as the young man trudged through the frozen water, carrying a few bags with things such as fruit and water. Water was a rare sight in this village during the year, but the coming of winter allowed for the people to melt it into water and filter it for any dangerous qualities.
The boy rubbed his shoulders, trying to shy away the chilling cold that nommed on his skin, his mind forming a fantasy about sitting in front of his heater, basking in the warmth.
His face turned into a twisted smile as he saw his house enter the horizon of his vision, he picked up the pace, not wanting to wait out in this cold hell any longer.
He arrived at his humble abode and entered without hesitation, and went to the family room where he started a fire and placing wood to get it ablaze and sat next to it, basking in the unmistakably heartwarming fire.
Arising from his sitting position, the boy approaches a bookshelves filled to the brim with books about history, stories, and tutorials. But there was one book that grabbed his attention, it was the one he remembers reading the most.
He reaches out to the book and pulls it from its resting place. He gazes at the cover which read; The Outside. It was a book his uncle had written himself, detailing the mysteries and wonders of the outside world. He remembers how he would lie down on his bed and listen intently as his uncle told him about the fruits of his travels.
The boy sat back down in front of the blazing fire and opened the book to read it to himself. Fields of burning snow, giant bodies of water, rocks that scratched the sky, and trees that blocked out the sun. It was all very enticing to the young man, no matter how many times he read it over and over again.
The boy flipped to the last page and saw his uncle’s prized possession: his golden compass. He takes the golden compass from its place and opened it up revealing dozens of little Roman numerals and coded symbols.
The boy closed the book and stood up once again. The boy went to his room and picked out a bag and filled it with necessities and got dressed in appropriate winter attire and left his room.
The boy returned to the living room and packed the book inside his bag before ending the flame.
He sighs heavily before blowing out the candles, swallowing the house in darkness.
He gathers all of his courage and walks out of his home and eventually reaches the gate.
Once at the threshold that holds the wonders of the outside world, the boy went for the compass and opened it up for the directions. It pointed west, east, south, and north crazily like it was mad.
It took it a minute before the needle stopped moving and pointed north.
The boy nods and closes the compass before moving northward. Ready to begin his journey.
