Description
It is indeed a monumental shame that we as fans will never enjoy repeated episodes of the Eighth Doctor...the audios fill that void, and as campy as the 1996 movie was, it is made enjoyable by Paul McGann's portrayal.I've probably seen "The Night of the Doctor" more than the actual 50th Anniversary special. Probably because it is tied closer to the show's history than "Day of the Doctor" was, and featured that long-needed regeneration of the Eighth Doctor. I've accepted that we'll never see a proper regeneration story of the Ninth Doctor due to obvious reasons, but seeing McGann come back 17 years later without missing a beat for an almost seven minute story was nothing short of an early Christmas miracle.
This was a custom I purchased off Ebay a couple months ago, so of course I've spent some time thinking how I wanted to go about this setup. It wasn't easy, but the creative juices were flowing as I thought more on it. The backdrop is a light redressing of the one from "The Three Doctors" box set and one that I used in my Face of Evil photo set last week. The addition of a few extra accessories and lighting adjustments equal an approximation of the actual episode on Karn, as we said goodbye formally to the Eighth Doctor.
Interesting that this is my second Big Finish related post today. Maybe that's a sign I need to do scene recreations from those stories now.

This figure's coming out in 3.75 inch scale now, apparently. Uh.... twitter.com/TheFab14/with_replβ¦
Any advice for making a 5 inch version like this? What parts to use, sorta thing? I think I'm going to have to learn how to sculpt with modelling putty to get the hairstyle and the collar right and things... I really want to keep the old Eighth Doctor coat and arms but it needs changes.
The legs I think will have to come from a Castrovalva figure, with the boots Tom Baker wore, and maybe the waistcoat too.

I bought this from ebay, but there was a LOT of resculpting and repainting involved using the existing Eighth Doctor from the 11 Doctors box set. The collar, hair, boots, and portions of the waistcoat were completely resculpted and repainted to get a close approximation of what we saw in "The Night of the Doctor". In fact, I think only the coat is the only original portion that still remains from the Eighth Doctor figure, although I think even the coat was given a light repaint to be olive-drab green than the dark green the existing coat is.Β
Ironically I was eyeballing doing a custom "Dark Eyes" Eighth Doctor with the extra McGann head. But I'll try and get a very basic photo of this custom for you to look at and study later in the next few days.Β

I've never really resculpted anything before, but I've seen TOMFAN's customs and how he did it, and how he did his NotD figure especially. I know it's here somewhere...

That, and I desperately want to do a proper Trial of a Time Lord Sixth Doctor, as I'm sick of that Eleven Doctors Set version. He added extra hair and size to make it really stand out from the original version:

It looks tricky, and I'd rather add bits than take them away... too much modelling putty and it'll look odd. I was thinking of using a Keeper of Traken 4th Doctor or Castrovalva 5th Doctor for the legs and waistcoat, maybe the full body as well. Depends which is cheaper.

What d'you think? Looks useful?

I love TOMFAN's customs and if he ever offered up commission work I'd certainly get him to do a few for me.Β
But you're right, the look is so specific that it takes eyeballing and looking at certain parts that you want and need to make happen. If I remember right McGann supposedly wore his original TV movie waistcoat too along with his coat so you have that as an option as well.

I don't think so, the original figure is buttoned up like a vest with two rows of buttons, but in Night of the Doctor, it's more like Matt Smith or Colin Baker's waistcoat.

The movie wasn't campy. I believe it was one of the best Doctor Who stories made.

It was okay, I personally like the movie and had it on bootleg for the longest time. The movie console room is still my favorite incarnation of that room.

This was a great recreation. I definitely think you should try your hand at more Big Finish Scenes. It would be nice to see more of those come to life, you know?

I've thought about it more and more. That's what I love about audio and radio, the imagination is a lot stronger when you take away the visual cues. There was one scene, I think in the opening of Dark Eyes where the Eighth Doctor encounters the Master (or some other Time Lord) and is locked out of seeing the end of the universe. That exchange was a lot more intense without seeing the actors that it's stuck with me since.

If you're talking about the first Dark Eyes, it's not the Master.
I know what you mean about imagination. makes the novels so compelling too.Β
Still, it would be nice to see a possibility.

My copy of Dark Eyes 1 just came in yesterday and I did realize my spectacular mistake (twas Straxus). I also got the War Doctor that comes with the Dark Eyes-era Eighth Doctor head and now I want to try and find a body to customize body for it. Can't wait to finish so I can get in on Dark Eyes 2.
Sadly I never read the novels, and they're much too expensive to get now second hand.
I will be working on some scene recreations from the audios shortly, a friend of mine unloaded a lot of them on me recently that he didn't listen to anymore, especially the remaining Eighth Doctor stories with Lucie that I hadn't listened to yet. It'll give me good material to work with.

Impressive!
Well to be honest, McGann made the ultimate sin when he played Dr Who by stating that "the thought of meeting annorack fans would chill his soul" and that he "would never be seen dead at a convention". Shame really because McGann has a chilling calm to him and would have been interesting to see how his Doctor would have worked.
Good models here too as always

I'd never heard McGann make that comment before, ironic given that he ended up doing the con circuit anyway. After Tom Baker and Colin Baker his appearances have the longest lines, especially when he's appeared here stateside.
And thank you! Another irony is today I received the War Doctor figure, so that was a bit of great timing there!

Really? I am surprised! I read these comments when he first did the film. I never knew he did this - WOW! Shame, would love to see how he turned out. Ah well...
My pleasure sir

I think he turned out well for himself, considering he's even put on a replica of his TV Movie coat for a fan photo at Gallifrey One in Los Angeles. Something must've clicked in his brain to embrace the convention circuit the way he has been in the last few years but he's certainly now being caught at them...alive of course
