That arm. XD Hm, do you know a very, very basic tutorial for someone who's never, ever made a ball joint? Even this is a bit too advanced for me.

That was extremely helpful and interesting. Your writing and pictures are simple enough to follow.
But I have a question. How do you put it all together??? Will the joints be stiff enough to hold a pose? If I use the same principal for the knee will it stand?

batchix In reply to chill13 [2012-02-23 23:13:24 +0000 UTC]
you can string your doll up with round elastic, which will hold the parts together.
Whether or not it'll stand will depend on how well you built the knee parts as well as how balanced the upper body is. THe bigger the head and the smaller the feet the harder it is to get the doll to stand. if you can get the knee to keep it's place you've still got to make sure the ankles are strong. It's complicated, and there's no real easy way to plan for it other than a lot of trial and error. :/ sorry that's not much help, but even now that i've been making this style of doll for six years I still have to go through a lot of iterations before the doll will stand. getting their legs the same length is difficult too.
One way that i've found helps is using a low temp hot glue gun to glue the individual pieces into "place" while the doll is strung and to leave whatever joints I'm working on without glue so I can be sure that i'm just testing that part.

Thank you so much for posting this! I've been reading your tutorials and am SO happy I found them. I'm about to start making my own BJD but wasn't sure on how to create the joints, but you explained it so well that I'm pretty sure I'll be able to do it.

This is interesting....I've been intrigued by ball-jointed dolls today and keep researching a bit, and even if I plan on buying a base first, I might try sculpting one when I'll be used to sculpting...
But I wonder, I've seen on the sculpey website some clay named Living Doll and seems to be made for dollmaking...I might try to find some but I have no idea if it's good. o.o For now I just have super sculpey.
Anyway, I'll make sure to fave this for when I'll make some dolls.

um XD do you know if its okay to put a rubber ball in the oven with clpy over it?

batchix In reply to Candied-K-nuckles [2010-07-04 22:07:44 +0000 UTC]
I don't know what rubber does when heated, if it expands it'll crack your part. It also might release toxic fumes or just catch fire or melt. I don't have a lot of experience with rubber. :S

this is super sculpey, yes?
do you find that it is weak when it is hollowed out? I have super sculpey and want to make a ball jointed doll....but i've read several things advising against it.

yup! If you make a doll from SS you want to not string it too tight or with too large of strings as it does not stand up to pressure. However, i cast all my dolls in resin when i'm done so that makes a big difference. :3

Thank you very much right now, i am still trying to decide the design. Looks like it's going to take some time, because the character has very slim legs, and i need to decide on feets that would make her stable XD

I made two different sets of feet for nan so that she had feet that fit in shoes and feet that she could actually stand in. :3

TowerCorp In reply to batchix [2010-01-11 20:16:29 +0000 UTC]
Now, this is one very interesting idea! I didn't even think about interchangeable feets XP
see, my doll is going to be based on this character [link] and as you can see, her feet are very small, and i don't think that a resin doll would be able to stand on these. Weird enough, i've got at least 4 more ideas for them as i was writing this message o_O

I love your tutorial. It clarifies several questions I had about the making of certain joints and presented everything in a clear, understandable manner.
I'm working on a doll currently. So far I've only done the head, torso, and legs. Hoping to do the arms according to your tutorial (along with the leg joints) this weekend. I shall have to see if it goes well.
It would be amazing if you could put up more tutorials about dollmaking for us amateurs.

So I finally figured it out I know I bugg you on ocasion but maybe this tutorial will come in handy if I may ask is it roughly the same all the way around with the other body parts and torso and such?
Ill have to work on my first doll and once done Ill have to show you my finished piece ^_^
Ill be working really hard ^_^

batchix In reply to The-Beautiful-Void [2009-08-04 03:54:03 +0000 UTC]
awesome! I'm always happy to help if I can. :3 But yeah, it's roughly the same with other joints, except one side of the ball is fused. There's no floating peanut part in say, the shoulders or wrist or hips or ankles. The knee tho, that can be done the same way.

first one took me a few months to build... now it takes me about a month for a mini- but that's when I worked on them full time. I have a new job now, so it would be much slower going. :3

woah but did it pay off? and was it expensive to make [as you can see im highly consitering making one] and do u have to bake it?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
batchix In reply to xSceneCupcakex [2009-06-23 01:41:20 +0000 UTC]
In this tutorial I used super sculpey, and yeah you do have to bake it. I'd say from initial sculpting to finishing casting I spent a little more than I would on a company doll to make the 42cm dolls... so $500-600. For a 60cm it would be more, probably closer to $1000. For a tiny like the one in this tutorial it was closer to $300-400. but the cost is usually stretched out over 3-4 months.

hehehehe noodles. XD I just found this on the other website yesterday, then I stalkeded it here to DA (woah, rhyme time) The rest of your tut is really helpful, and I'ma try scuplting in the Sculpey Bendable. I almost hope to end up with NOODLEY NOODLEY NOODLEY just so I can say out loud to anyone around "NOODLEY NOODLEY NOODLEY!!!" lol XD
Slightly (un)related note, would you be able to post a picture or something of the openings on the joints? I know it's kinda wierd to ask, but I -cannot- for the life of me find pictures of exactly what each joint needs for the string, and I have -no- access to a doll. But I would be forever grateful if you could help! (Sorry for the brick of unrelatedness, if it helps, I'm definately using your tutorial when I stop being lazy! ^^)
