Description
I could see the last rays of the sun shining onto the ocean floor in rivulets of light, beams that had broken through the last openings in the the viscous surface. I dove deeper towards the sand below me, escaping the alien blanket of darkness, but I would have to surface eventually. My descent was useless – I was soon surrounded by tiny, rust-coloured droplets that clung to my feathers like insects. As I rose, more and more particles began to cling to my body, and as I finally broke the surface the slick layer came like a mask over my face, a mask that blinded me and pinned my wings down and made it impossible for me to move. I floated... unable to do anything.
The reporter walked along the beach, facing the camera. "These two pelicans were found on this Louisiana beach early this morning. They are the first reported victims of the oil spill, and if the current situation prevails, they will not be the last."
