Description Superman and Doomsday: digital inks over

pencils

This was a lot of fun, just doing a crazy battle scene and I've been kind of an underachiever work-wise this week, so it's good to post something that's complete.

Most graphics programs have some option for smoothing that can compensate for a small amount of jitter. You sacrifice some of the control of what each stroke looks out, but a lot of the little variations are cleaned up. If you're using a tablet with pressure sensitivity, play with your hardness settings. I tend to do most of my inks with my tablet set to medium hardness. I find going too far up or down can cause jitter in the opposite end.

Good job on the inks. Question, when you ink digitally do you use the pencil tool or the brush at max hardness? When I ink my own pencils on the computer I use the brush tool because its easier to control, but it also means I will have a little bit of fuzziness around the lines.

I use a hard brush with airbrush and smoothing checked and the count turned up to about 10. If you're on an older computer or version of photoshop, these settings can cause stroke problems on the brush. I'm running the 64-bit version of cs4 and find that a lot of the performance problems I had on older versions of PS are gone. Plus the image rotation is the best feature Adobe has ever developed.

So anyway, this gets me most of the way there and at the end I can go 1 of two ways. When I ink for something I'm coloring myself I just keep the inks in their own separate channel layer. When I ink for someone else, I've taken to running an unsharp mask filter at the end. This usually is enough as long as I'm working at a super high resolution (usually at least double the print size, more often 4-8 times the size) or just providing a layered document.

CS2 was big jump for PS. I think CS4 was definitely the most significant version since then. Most of the stuff I do with colors is still totally doable in CS2, but the digital inks would be a lot harder to go back to.

Cool. Whenever you get to it I'd love to compare notes after. There are a lot of tricky little line selection areas. I'd be interested to see which choices you make.

Thanks. I love the details in this one too. I tried to keep the line weight under control and select the right lines to push back the background. My favorite part in the bg is the wrecked truck out on the right.

Thanks! I was going to probably take a stab at colors myself but I don't suppose I'd have a problem with you working on it.
