Description
No less than 5 people told me I should make a bear tutorial last week so I finally gave in and made one xDI do not claim to be the be all and end all on bears, this is just info I have accumulated over time drawing my 'sona.
I can't emphasize enough that polar bears, pandas and the like have quite different anatomy from brown bears (just compare a photo side by side). This tutorial won't help you for them.
If this helped you at all consider supporting my art ^^ Click Here! Β even a few dollars helps me out right now while im in between work & gives me more time to create awesome content for you.
Edit: corrected a few syntax errors and added some arrows I forgot I intended to!

Bless your soul for this tutorial!
I've only ever drawn one cringy polar bear head but I'm trying to do a bear now and this has been wonderful! I think I'm doing well so far because of it!
So thank you! I appreciate it a lot!

I'm definately gonna try to remember this for drawing in the future, I just really like the the sound of "beastbone"
"It sounds beast yo " (I make typos all the time I didn't mean to insult you)
I wanna know: do you work for Disney or something? Cuz your stuff is top quality.

Awesome tutorial from the master of burrs! Love the shape portion in particular. So hard to get their chest/neck features right, especially if you are used to drawing cats and dogs.

This is very useful! I'll definitely reference this next time I want to draw a bear. Just to clarify, when you say brown bear, would that be the same as a grizzly bear? I know that there's some types of black bears that can be white or brown, so the wording is confusing me a bit.

Bear-hybrid In reply to Ribbon-Wren [2016-06-08 02:44:14 +0000 UTC]
Brown bear is actually a species not a color (so annoying when they name like that, rats have this issue too lol) so yup! Grizzlies, Kodiaks, Tibetan, Syrian etc are all sub-species of brown bear (ursus arctos) eg. Grizzly is Ursos arctos horribilis.
Their slightly different appearance is generally caused by localized genes and environments.
American black bears can also be brown or cinnamon (or white, ie Kermode) colored which sometimes has people mis-identifying them as brown bears. ABBs tend to have a sleeker looking body, smoother fur & no muscular hump over their shoulders. They also look slighty more canine look to the face imo. A good example of a stylized one is the mother in disney's Brave ^^
Hope that helps!

Cool, I didn't know that! They really shouldn't have given them such a vague name xD So all grizzlies are brown bears, but not all brown bears are grizzlies?
Yeah, that's what confused me! I've heard people call brown American black bears "brown bears" and then grizzlies "brown bears" and that confused me as to what a brown bear actually was. I'll keep an eye out for those traits next time I need to identify a bear! Β
Thanks for the clarification!
