Back in the deep dark year of 2006, a naïve wannabe writer thought she was it. The next J K Rowling (Oh yes Harry Potter obsessed!) who was going to blow the socks off with her incredible words. Back in that deep dark year that writer was lost and wondering why nobody really appreciated their art and why nobody was reading and gushing over these amazing words of the golden age. Why were people’s socks still on?

Then that girl found this website- “AT LAST SOMEWHERE TO SHOW EVERYONE I AM THE NEXT JKR!”, she screamed. With delight she uploaded everything she’d written in the last year and with pride waited for the socks to be blown off. A few eyes peeked and said “nice” and a few more peeked and said “fav”. But it wasn’t enough- those little toes were still warmed by cotton.

So the girl whinged and whined “why doesn’t anyone realise how amazing I am?” and “Nobody reads” and “why does dA hate literature?”

And she whinged and she whined and nobody responded.

Then one day, someone switched the lights on. It was no longer deep and dark, but full of thorns and great unknowns. The girl explored through the vines and found forums, chatrooms and OTHER WRITERS. She found nice people and realised if she was nice to them, watched them and started reading their work and appreciating them, they would sometimes return that kindness.

Of course it wasn’t all blissful. Those thorns were spikey and cut into her with sudden reality. She wasn’t the next JK Rowling yet, she had to grow, improve and educate. Suddenly the girl realised that this place she had found was more than just somewhere to push her own work, the door was wide open.

That open door found a community, an amazing, passionate community that are willing to give and share their experience. They are willing to take their own personal time to help others and strengthen peoples crafts, not just in writing but all aspects of Art. They share what they love and encourage others to do so.

That girl didn’t realise 8 years ago she’d found a home. Like minded, energetic people that over time she has had the opportunity to share her experiences with and create and innovate new directions. She has a sense of belonging.

She’s not a girl anymore, she grew up. She grew up on this site full of amazing inspiring individuals. She isn’t the next JK Rowling and her writing doesn’t necessarily blow many socks off, but she is happier than ever and so proud of this place.
