Description A - maybe - new project, and I'm pretty unsure about how to do this.

The grey line indicates where one page ends and the other starts.

I would appreciate any critique I could get on this, especially from people who know and are interested in mythology and mythological animals. Tell me if you like it, if you want me to continue with it, and every mistake I've done here. Especially critique on the writing, the content, layout, etc. If you wish to critique the drawing, please do that on the drawing itself, link posted below.

What I know about this:
- It is going to be science fantasy about unicorns.
- Since unicorns are describes so differently from place to place and from century to century, I have divided the unicorns into two families, one for the horse-like (modern) unicorns, and one for the traditional, more goat-like type with lion tail, cloven hooves, etc.
- I will go into detail (if you find this interesting and want me to continue with this) on different unicorn species, different horn types, how to tame unicorns & what not to do, history, eventually about the social life, the way they act, etc.
- There will be unicorn drawings and sketches. Lots of 'em.

Things I do not know:
- How long it will be.
- What to write where. I might change a lot on the pages.
- If this will be an appendix / part of a larger project about mythological mammals/animals.

- Under which category to post this (is it literature? What sort of literature? There is a drawing in it. ATM it's under traditional art --> mixed media --> fantasy).

Once again, all critique is welcome!

I love how you made it look so real. The horn is curved a bit, but it still looks like a horn. I also like how you drew the tail. Yes, it does hide the 4th leg some, but you can see a bit of the fetlock(?) if you look closely. However horse tails, especially the Clydesdale horse, are thick haired and long if you don't cut them regularly. The information is very interesting and easy to understand. I found it informative, helpful, and as I mentioned previously, interesting. This is very well done and I enjoyed looking at this.

The horn seems a bit bent and it's a little difficult to see the fourth leg hidden behind the tail, so this unicorn looks like it only has three legs. Some of the shading looks a little bit smudged in areas and on of the legs resembles that of a mere shadow of a leg. I like the calligraphy and a lot of the shading looks right. Th lines seem clean and the horse itself has enough character to appeal to wide variety of people. I think my favorite part about this picture though is that it actually says far more than a thousand words, it could tell a thousand stories.

I love what you've done here! Unicorns are so often depicted as very elegant, slender white horses that seeing one as a coloured horse (and a heavy horse at that) is a refreshing change. I wonder if shetland pony unicorns could exist too?

Personally I always preferred the straight horn, but you're almost certainly right toshow it as curved like this. Most horns in nature are curved, after all.

As far as critique goes, I'd say that that writing is a bit too curly to be able to read much of. I'd go for an easier-to read sans serif personally. If you want to go for something that looks like handwriting then that might be a very nice addition to your sci-fa unicorn collection (perhaps as field notes of someone who's seen the elusive Russian unicorns you mentioned?) but for the bulk of the writing, maybe keep to something easier on the eye.

And hey - I'm working on compiling a list of different articles written by people who are knowledgeable about things like this - speculative biology, robotics, commercial security, anything at all. If you like, we could talk about that so that I can show off your unicorn work to people on an ongoing basis. That is, if you feel ready for it to be seen? Just ask if you'd like to know more!

Antelope unicorns sound very sweet. And flighty.

And hey, keep it up, it's really awesome work!

Just by coincidence, I enjoyed watching the movie "Birkebeinerne" last night, and was admiring the horses and ponies.

This sounds like a terrific project! I'd be willing to bet you can get all sorts of local input from all over the world. For instance, since I live in New Mexico, in the United States, I could tell you that it is a high desert environment, and suggest that you look at the pronghorn antelope as a basis for size and coloring, yearly migration, fodder and social habits.

I'd like to see you give yourself more room on the page (increase your margins) but keep the leading as you have it, and although I like the typeface, it's considered a decorative font, so I'd suggest using it just for headings and titles. For the general text, I'd suggest a font like ITC Eras, which is easier on the eye to read.

I've made this a favorite to remind myself to revisit in the future. Good luck, and thanks for sharing your skill and vision.

Thank you for all the tips! I was actually looking at different types of antelope (especially gazelles) as inspiration for the desert-type, but I'll look into pronghorns too Coincidentally, I've actually seen some - I took a trip through the US some years ago. Parts were with the Greyhound bus, from Salt Lake City to Chicago... And I saw some of them on the way. They are beautiful creatures, and extremely fast!

And once again, thank you for the tips!

I think that it is a very interesting project! I’d love to see you continue on with it! As a unicorn lover, and enthusiast it will be fantastic to see your take on different species!!

I particularly like the idea of modern versions vs. the more traditional ones. Learning how to tame them also sounds very interesting. Will you be including the quintessential golden bridle in it?

I have to say that I really like the way you are presenting this. It has the feeling of a sketchbook that you would carry with you out during a unicorn study expedition. I like the simple, yet elegant layout and page design.
Will most of the images be grayscale or will you include some in color?

The drawing itself it’s very well done. The heavier, more powerful horse silhouette works very well for a hybrid. He looks fierce! Also, the anatomy is very well studied and rendered. Excellent shading that captures the texture of the pelt and the muscles underneath.
Great work! Looking forward to the next entry!

(By the way, have you read Odell Shephard’s “The Lore of the Unicorn”?
Another great book that deals with unicorn lore and habits is Robert Vavra’s photography book “Unicorn’s I have known”)

Congratulations and best of lucks with this amazing idea.
Wishing you all the best!

Thank you so much for the feedback! I was planning to make all the drawings with pen (same style as this one, or eventually sketches just to show the poses). I haven't read those books, I've actually never seen any good books just about unicorns... Which is why I got the idea of making one

This looks really interesting, you should definitely continue the project. I especially like how you have equcornus as a tame species. Has the use of equcornus affected the popularity of horses? Will rhinos or narwals play into it anyway? (long ago dodgy adventurers would try to convince rich collectors that they had a unicorn horn) I am so excited to see where this goes! Sorry I am not much help on layout or anything like that they are my weak points too,
