Description Fireflies swarmed
in the warm Illinois night.
And I, young and bereft of fire,
stood in wonder
at their pent-up magic.

A waking dream
on the edge of reality.
I remember their tail lights, still.

Even then, I had no wish
to capture fireflies;
I could not hold them in tight fists.
They were too free for that
and I too caged.

I want magic in my life.
A little light,
a tiny lantern.

I'm years away
from that Illinois summer.
Lost in my own frontyard,
I sense no wonder,
only the empty buzz of mosquitoes.

Life stings.
Life itches.
Life calls for a liberal dose of calamine lotion.

As dusk deepens,
I stand alone in shadow.
No bright firefliesβ€”
not even the gleam
of a crescent moon.
Where are the magic lights
I was promised in my childhood?

Burnt out
before they could fly away.

Thank you. I'm glad you like it -- that means a lot to me. I'm from the Left Coast and was a teen when I visited family in Illinois -- they just amazed me.

I'm from Washington state and was a teen when I visited relatives in Illinois. I had never seen fireflies before; they were almost magical to me. Even this many years later, they amaze me.

I put almost my whole gallery in storage while you were gone. The oldest stuff had been there for ages and needed to be; the other stuff, well, I just did it. I took out the DDs a couple of weeks ago. I'm so glad you liked this one.

Very much. Β I don't know how I missed it before. (I think it's a good thing to go back for a look
at all those stored pieces.Β The retrospective is healthy, like rereading an old diary, I suppose.
Whether they stay in mothballs or come out for air, they are a part of us.)

Thanks for unstoring some of these jewels!

Nice work.I just think it shows how enexpected, confusing and fickle life can be.Wouldn't it be great if you never had to regret, apologize or cry ever again?I wish even myself could live up to what a good friend, brother, father,or person that I should be.I seek to find a positive path and outlook especially when I write, but that thing called experience kicks in and things seem to dim.I know all about shadows.

It may sound clichΓ©, but I think life has to be a mix, "You have to take the bitter with the sweet, I suppose," as musician Billy Bragg writes in one of his songs. I'm glad you liked the poem -- and I really appreciate your kind comment.
