Description I promised I would make a tutorial. I'm horrible at explaining things, so I think I ended up over compensating and explaining too much, if that makes since. God I'm so afraid this thing won't make any sense to anyone but me. Oh well, what's done is done. I hope this helps everyone who wants to know how I do my line art. Comment here if you have questions/comments/concerns

Full view to see the tutorial. It's a huge picture, so beware!

Ahhh, this is good, ive been using pen tool for lineart too, (nothing posted yet)
but always had a problem with it looking very weak, never thought of going over it with smaller brushes to thicken up the centre of the line. (if thats actually what you mean in step #10)

Is there anyway to do a solid line? like all the way through.

cause with this way it sort of fades out and with step 10 I realise this sort of makes it solid.
But it takes ALOT of time hahaha
I finished doing a hair outline with this method and man.. im so impatient.

begger4mcgregor In reply to Mychemrom [2009-09-14 07:48:19 +0000 UTC]

Yep, for a solid line just select the pen tool and right click, click "Stroke Path", and un-check the box that says "Stimulate Pressure". Now anytime you stroke your path it will be a solid non-varied line.

ahh wicked thanks alot!
xD

Now I have ONE last question.
If I save this and its unfinished.. all the layers are gonna combine arnt they?
I dont have time to finish it right now and I have to close down my laptop..
is there anyway i can save it? or do i have to leave PS open?

begger4mcgregor In reply to Mychemrom [2009-09-14 16:46:25 +0000 UTC]

Save as a Photoshop .psd or .pdf file and all your layers will remain separate It should be the default file type photoshop wants to save in. It will only merge your layers if you save as .jpg .gif .png etc. and it should warn you before you save if it's going to merge the layers.

I wil SO have to try this way of inking my pictures I got an art trade sketch I can practice on X3

I have to say, this is a very good way to do this! I've been using the pen tool for a while, but my lineart looks very stiff... this actually replicates the traditional way of inking! And if I can get it to work I'll save hundreds on not buying ink XDDD;;

Not sure about that, never used it myself. I would say try to follow the tutorial and if you don't have all the options you need then you probably can't do it with elements. *shrug*

Of course, you've already got, like, a ton of comments saying the same thing, but still. And the overexplaining is good, because you have natural blondes like me who won't get the point otherwise.

This tutorial has helped me a lot. The cell shading one, too. The two drawings I've submitted use this kind of line art (well, it's not EXACTLY the same, but still). I would have commented ages ago, but I found it before I had a DA account.

But I don't think that the wispy line thing is because you have a tablet plugged in, because Photoshop lets me switch whether it looks like that or just a dot whether I have my tablet plugged in or not. Then again, I have CS3, not 7.
