This helped alot but I have one issue - a subtle shadow is rendered under the transparent border of conky. Like shown in the last picture of this gallery:

I am running metacity instead of compiz - could that be the reason ?

i dont have this problem with metacity but try to change the own_window_type to override

One more thing, what theme is it ? I got a similar theme, with this kind of buttons in nautilus but i can't manage to get a dark panel.

das elementary projekt ist schon ne feine sache.
ich finde es nur schade das nicht alle programme support fΓΌrs globalmenu haben, midori oder beat-box z.b.

Das kommt daher weil elementary in generell die MenΓΌleiste nicht unterstΓΌtzt. Man will eher das MenΓΌ abschaffen und es durch ein kompaktes MenΓΌ (ala firefox oder besser nautilus elementary) ersetzen.
