most beautiful shot i've seen for a while. rich in colour, with a sense of inner calm... (and i thought that was fuji before i read the description! didn't go there when i was in japan, but maybe will get to next time)

Thank you!

You must visit again. The best time to see Fuji is in the winter, when the skies are most clear. But if you want to climb it, you'll have to visit in summer.

You must. Wonderfully warm film. The saturation is incredible. Simply put, no other film comes close.

out of curiosity, was it "old" velvia or new velvia? (iso 100 vs 50) i've actually heard only good things about the new film, though i was half-expecting a fair few people would react against it simply because it's "not the old one"

billsabub In reply to ayembee [2005-09-23 20:46:35 +0000 UTC]

Hehe. It's the "real new" Velvia.

It's a plugin for PhotoShop that simulates the rich saturation of Velvia.

That wasn't my goal. Really, it wasn't!

I like your photo of Fuji. Especially "Where the clouds divide". Did you get to the amusement park Fuji-Q Highlands, which is down at the bottom of that pic? Some excellent rides!

Thank you! Unfortunately no, we were on a rather miserable bus tour.....but at least we did get to see some nice distance shots and then finally, the actual mountain.

great choice with the velvia, its saturation is certainly put to great use in this piece, and really great job on the crop, the composition is very strong

i have one question and one suggestion, the question is what is the object cutting into the frame in the lower right, is it some vignetting from a filter?
the suggestion would be to go into the darkroom or photoshop and try to burn out (very very softly and gently) that lens flare, my eyes are continually drawn to it, as well as doing a slight burn or dodge in the lower left hand corner of the image, because of the very small amount of detail that is left there I want to know what it is and thus my eyes spend a lot of time on such a very small and out of the way piece of the picture, and since slide film tends to hold at least 1 1/2 stops below the exposure rating I am willing to bed that part of the negative does indeed hold enough detail to make bringing it out worth while

there, i tried to be helpful for all the other comments i'm seeing are just saying 'pretty picture' and the such and as it most definetely still is, i like to be different

billsabub In reply to gokuyert [2005-09-24 01:48:02 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for the slow reply. I had quite a few "thanks" replies to give to the "pretty picture" comments. Yours has been sitting here until I can give some thoughtful comments on your thoughtful comments.

The lower corners are definitely the weak points of the image. No vignetting, since there weren't any filters. Hadn't really noticed the corners until the DD and a couple of people mentioned it. I could probably crop 15-20 pixels off the bottom and that would be fine. I doubt there's much detail in the lower left, but I can try. Unfortunately, it's not the Velvia slide film, just a plugin for PS that simulates the rich saturation of Velvia.

Thanks again for the thoughtful comments. It was a pleasure to read them!

its dead wierd, whilst i think its a great photo, the patch of dark shade on the bottom left corner for some reason just doesn't agree with me at all no idea why

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

billsabub In reply to theOnlyMisterMe [2005-09-21 22:53:23 +0000 UTC]

Fair enough. The little patch of dark in the lower right drives me nuts. But if I crop it, I end up losing the sky to the right. I guess I could crop the bottom and that would make that area that bugs you smaller.

I'll have to think on it.

Thank you for your input!
