Description Just a reply to all the wallpaper requests i get here at DA.

I really sometimes get fed up with how the digital realm is now reliant on the materialistic approach to art.
Sure, i love to decorate my desktop sometimes, but just how much does this detract or influence just whats in our heads?
The same artwork sitting there... is it influencing me and you to think of certain concepts?

And does it limit our imaginations?

Sure sometimes it can also inspire... yet for how long?

It's just a vent, but it's how i feel to such things... I truely hate making wallpapers.

I like this a lot. At first it only caught my eye because of its stark appearance (white on black, large font, and use of "FUCKING"), but the message forced me to think about the purpose of the artist (and his art) and contrast these to that of the desktop background. See the comment I left above on LeonaWindrider's comment from a while back.

Just a thought: if you're getting a good amount of requests to make wallpaper out of your art, perhaps you might take it as a compliment to your art, rather than an annoyance.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

bindyeye In reply to LeonaWindrider [2007-02-23 02:57:36 +0000 UTC]

I realise that:
It's the detraction from the art itself that i worry about.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LeonaWindrider In reply to bindyeye [2007-02-23 13:10:36 +0000 UTC]

I can understand that -- I always figured a "no, I don't have time to do that" or "no I don't do wallpapers" would be a more appropriate than getting snarky with people who like your art enough to bother to ask you. But that's just me.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

bindyeye In reply to LeonaWindrider [2007-02-24 05:21:15 +0000 UTC]

Lol... who's getting snarky?
You think i haven't replied to fan posts or threads before?
It's really all about finding the time to do them...

And i think you are detracting away a lil on my main points now.
And concentrating on the hard truth... That i hate wallpapers.

LeonaWindrider In reply to bindyeye [2007-02-24 15:28:35 +0000 UTC]

Meh, I'm just calling it as I see it after reading the description that you wrote. Trust me, the fact that you hate wallpapers is pretty clear, but so is the fact that you've just slapped the people that ask you about them in the face. I really have no idea who you are, and just happened to find the picture while browsing, but I was just a little appalled someone could be so mouthy with people who apparently just like your art.

I mean, jeez...all you really had to do was just say "no" when you get a request. A liiiitle customer service goes a long way...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

bindyeye In reply to LeonaWindrider [2007-02-25 02:17:48 +0000 UTC]

You keep repeating yourself and it's obvious your a lil confused.
And if you'd like me to reply with a lame comment...
The answer is "NO".

Now thats customer service for ya.

LeonaWindrider In reply to bindyeye [2007-02-25 14:17:07 +0000 UTC]

Not confused at all -- just not really impressed with your people skills. But it's your gig not mine, so have a nice day.

I think you misinterpret the deviation; at no point did he say that he treats individual requests the way this wallpaper presents its message. I got the impression that instead of ranting at every person that requested a wallpaper, or in fact being rude in the slightest, he was venting it in this work.

I also feel that there's something wrong with your talk of "customer service" - as an artist, one exists to create, not to serve. At first, I was a little shocked by the message as well, but I think the themes behind it are valid ones. How should an artist respond to the commercialization of his or her work as would happen in the case of a wallpaper? An artist's service to the viewer is to stretch their mind, to offer something different - a new perspective, a new idea, an insight. A wallpaper is background, it's always there. One tends to become desensitized to it, to ignore it, even, beyond the simplest of aesthetics arising from its shapes, colours, and flow. An artist's service to the "customer", then, is ostensibly to object to the use of their work, which should spark thought, as an ordinary desktop background - or as background of any form incongruous with the art's meaning.

To me, this deviation is not at all about "people skills," rather about the danger of art losing its meaning.

..That's just my , anyhow

Thank you Isarl.
You have taken the concept and finally put it into words that even leona should understand.

My point is that exactly.

LeonaWindrider In reply to Isarl [2007-09-14 23:29:27 +0000 UTC]

Try to look at the date of a post before you drag the topic back up. I was done with this conversation back in February.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Isarl In reply to LeonaWindrider [2007-09-17 19:04:22 +0000 UTC]

I did look at the date, and I chose to reply anyway. As ~bindyeye has pointed out, comments aren't closed to reply on deviantART. If you don't want anything you write discussed once you've finished with it, then all you can do is not comment at all.

In contrast to your post below, at no point was I being rude. I posted my thoughts on your comment, and I wasn't picking a fight in anything I wrote. Half the reason I commented at all was to express to ~bindyeye my own take on the work, and to let him know that it succeeded in forcing me to think differently than I normally do. Just in case anybody would take issue with what I had to say, I included the statement (arguably implied in any comment) that it was my point of view, and nothing more. "..That's just my , anyhow " If you can point out to me stronger evidence that I was trying to drag you back into it, I'd be happy to see it so as to not repeat my mistake.

For somebody that says I have bad manners ("even on the internet"), your reply to my post could be interpreted as pretty hostile in its own right. I'm sorry for you if you took offense because I disagree with your opinions, or because I commented on the work when I came across it. I'm not naΓ―ve enough to say that I won't do it again, however; unlike those about politics or sports, a discussion about artwork never goes out of date, IMHO.

In closing, satisfy yourself to know that I always check when a comment was written, and in future, try and take me a little more lightly - heaven knows that if I took myself seriously, I'd be in for a lot of trouble

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LeonaWindrider In reply to Isarl [2007-09-17 22:22:54 +0000 UTC]

I do not find it offensive that you disagree with me -- you are as entitled to your opinion as much as I am. You'll notice at no point did I address your viewpoint on the wallpaper -- I merely stated that I had no interest in continuing the debate on the subject because I had already voiced my opinion, and had left it at that.

You're certainly welcome to reply whatever you like to me -- as you said there is no closing date on posts here at DA. However, that does not necessarily mean I'll be open for discussion on a topic which I dropped half a year ago. Further, you mention that you commented to me in order to express to :devbindeye: your own take on the work; this could easily be done by actually commenting on the piece (which I've seen that you've done), rather than attempt to bring up a debate with me on a topic which (again) I dropped half a year ago because I was quite done arguing about it.

As far as my reply to you appearing hostile, I do not agree. Sarcastic or curt perhaps, but not hostile. Trust me, if I'm openly hostile to you, there will be no doubt about whether I'm being so or not. I'm typically a very kind and open person -- search around my gallery or my journals if you wish to know me better. If I was grumpy it was because I didn't feel like continuing to argue...sort of like now.

Last time i looked, there were no closing dates on posts here at D.A.?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

That may be, but I think it was pretty apparent that I was done with the conversation back in February -- hence the statement "But it's your gig not mine, so have a nice day."

You two are very welcome to discuss the matter, however, as I said -- I was done with it half a year ago. ~Isarl trying to drag me back into it is fairly bad manners -- even on the internet.

i bet had someone replyed to the post around that time you still would have continued...
and you have rather bad manners yourself talking about art as just another item when its clearly creativity at its best.
