Description The sarimanok is a legendary bird of the Maranao people of Mindanao, Philippines. The name is a combination of "sari" (cloth) and "manok" (chicken)
There are various legends surrounding the bird, one being where it is an intermediary between the seen and unseen world, another where a colorful bird turns into a human prince to marry a sultan's daughter.
In some variations of the Tagalog creation account of "Malakas at Maganda", the role of the kite in the myth to peck the bamboo where the two eponymous first humans are in is replaced by a sarimanok, who has the given name Magaul/Magaulancealabarca.

This drawing and legend is quite fascinating. I really like the beautiful majesty you captured in the rooster, which is an image of these birds that is often looked over. He looks like a king. The sardine tied to the rope is an interestingly odd touch that gets me thinking over it's meaning behind it.

It's nothing too deep or anything, from other artistic depictions (including those from the original culture), it's depicted with a fish hanging from the beak.

The cuffs on the feet are also a reference to common depiction too since they like to place it on top of a fish/fuse the legs with a fish

I actually made a design notes kind of thing on my tumblr too, just didn't post it here for whatever reason haha: bitronic.tumblr.com/post/16386…

I love the thorough thought that you put into it! It makes it all the more special, this should hang in a gallery.

There is this one that is used in south america known as "el cuco" which is used to scare children into doing what their parents say or else the cuco will come and "get" them... They never describe what the cuco looks like but they always say it comes and gets you which is what makes it so much more scary; the fear of the strange and unknown
