I notice that about 95% of the "How to Train Your Dragon" Night Fury artists make a blue-eyed Night Fury with blacker scales than Toothless'. I'm in that 95% of course, having made Darkrai whose eyes (well EYE) is based off of an actual Darkrai from "Pokemon". Honestly though, I challenge you to search for Night Fury OCs on dA, Furaffinity, and the web in general. I'm talking about PROPER COLORED (black or dark blue) Night Furies (no purples, or whites, or...Neon green with pink stripes...) and you will see what I mean. Almost every single one of them has blue eyes and most are a darker black, like they're trying to prove they're blacker than Toothless or something. *shot* Oh, and nearly half of them are also female.

This is true for me too I guess. (Hooray for blue eyes and stripes) To be fair, I'm not super serious in terms of my coloring and sch (Blue was picked because I like the color, that's literally the only reason) I can appreciate accurate colors, but whenever I see a more brightly colored Night Fury I just think "Not my OC therefore I had no say in the color scheme. If this is what the person wants, then I don't care" I can appreciate an original(-ish) backstory, because "Toothless's brother/sister/cousin" thing is getting a bit old. There are a few people that do it really well, and my invisible hat is off to them. But there is a reason why I removed Toothless and the rest of the HTTYD/2 group from my story.

I've made 36 night fury avatars of people's OCs and I can guarantee that over half of them have blue eyes
although there is nothing wrong with night furies that look a lot like toothless with different eye colours. It's just not the most original if you ask meΒ

that's because people lack the effort to be creative. no morphology changes, overuse of stock photos, etc.
it's just copy paste of a movie screenshot with a 5 minute eye color. half my search results are cluttered with this garbage....

I've seen some actual drawings too actually. Nightshade, Sky - who is apparently a male Night Fury in a comic with actual dragon riders - Heidy17 made one recently with her own art as well. Do people have something against green though?
Cause I can understand doing that eye color thing with a sona, I have blue eyes so my sona has blue eyes, but so many OCs...

whats worse are the people who make a backstory starting with "toothless's brother/sister/long lost cousin". it's bad enough that they barely edit a photo reference and slap the OC label on it but they also have to make the backstory suck too.
i don't understand this minimal effort people put in and to top it off, they get *really* mad if you criticize their "OC's" at all. it's like taking a massive poop, being really proud of it, then getting angry that nobody else likes it except the other big poopers. it's just plain sad.

What pisses me off about those are when they make that brother or sister have such a tragic backstory, hate all humans, then have them be seen as superior to Toothless himself. I know he doesn't have a very scary name (I still don't take him completely seriously for it...) but he took down the KING of dragons! He also took down the Red Death! With a Human and a handicap.
And what do these siblings do? Get all the attention for being battle scarred and murderers. While Toothless is shunted to the side and treated as a complete pussy.

I know. He's the one that made me start realizing these issues. I made a contribution myself, about Albino Night Furies and how almost everyone Ives them bright markings of red or some other color and BLUE eyes. Or some color that isn't red-pink or whatever color albino reptiles have.

i wish he would address the painfully dull dragon names "night, sky, wing, claw, moon, stars, draco, etc."
it's like a persons name for a sentient creature is out of the question for them.

You have to remember though, some of these dragons are named by vikings. They all have simple or stupid names. Like Toothless...and Hiccup. Of course most are from the book series that started it.
Unless they have a Norse translation I think all the simple names would still be simple. Vespera means Evening Star of course but if translated to English she'd more than likely be nicknamed Star.
As far as names go I don't think they need a rant. You can name your dragon whatever you want if it isn't something long and sickly sweet like the ones in Grimm's sue - series.

I've noticed this as well, personally my own Nightfury, Flutterscotch..also has blue eyes..and is a female..wow. I'm in the 95% Β too as well I guess
blue-eyed nightfuries can be pretty neat-looking though and very well characters (such as Nightshade, a blue-eyed nightfury who is blue by body color as well..although the blue isn't very dark)

True. But it's become such the norm I feel I should just make Darkrai's eyes green like Toothless'. I mean green-yellow IS the proper eye color of the species according to the canon.Β
