Hahaha, yeah a skateboard would be much appreciated, no doubt. What we have here is a testament to the ingenuity of childhood. They make their amusement regardless of resources. Thanks for commenting.

Hi Laxmi, this is in Egypt and used to be a common source of entertainment for boys, probably still is. It looks dangerous, but they don't travel very fast, and he is riding on the back so he's not going to get run over by the tram if he falls off. I don't think it is as dangerous as it looks, at least I never heard of anyone getting hurt doing it. They just regard it as a bit of harmless fun.

Actually the tram would be stopped because the lady in white is boarding the tram.

Hi Sophia, yup, really happening. In fact it's pretty common stuff for Egypt, all the boys do it, sometimes for fun, and sometimes just because they're too lazy to walk all the way home after mom sent them to the shops.

I would say the government there doesn't make laws it couldn't effectively enforce, so they don't bother. All the boys there do it, but I think they generally sit on the back, so if they fell off they wouldn't get run over by the tram. And yes, it probably is fun. Thanks so much for the comments, glad you liked the pic.

That reminds me of home children risking their life for a free ride. The blur effect works well here; shows a lot of movement, catching the tram before they miss it. This is a film shot right?

blink-click In reply to MargarethHS [2009-06-18 05:22:53 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Margareth. Yes, it's an old film shot. A lot of the photos on my page are film shots scanned into a digital file. I still love film, still use it as well as digital.
Although technically it is far from perfect, I do like the blur, the way it suggests movement. However, it's not really dangerous. I never hear of kids getting injured or killed doing it. It's just cheap amusement for them

The result is different when you shoot with film and with digital! Film gives some effect that a DSLR won't be able to give, I feel. The kid in that photo must have amused himself a thousand time! He doesn't look scared at all!

What I like most about film is that there really is no limit to how big you can print it. Yes, you will see the grain of the film, but that's not a bad thing really, not when compared to pixels, anyway. But both film and digital have their place, I think.
Yes, the kids do that so regularly they hardly consider any risk in it.

MargarethHS In reply to blink-click [2009-06-19 14:24:36 +0000 UTC]

Film grain is beautiful. In fact, that's something that I look forward to when I shoot with films.

blink-click In reply to MargarethHS [2009-06-19 17:24:01 +0000 UTC]

yes -- I have one pic (Africa 1 on the last page of my gallery) where you can really see the grain. I love it because of that. I suppose one day they will invent an algorithm to make pixels look like film grain when the digital image is enlarged beyond it's proper resolution, but until they do, film wins out over digital in extreme enlargements... for me, anyway.

MargarethHS In reply to blink-click [2009-06-20 13:00:04 +0000 UTC]

I look forward to such an invention. That would be the only way to save a pixelated image.

blink-click In reply to MargarethHS [2009-06-20 13:23:34 +0000 UTC]

I thought it was a good idea, but maybe only film enthusiasts like you and I would ever care for it, so maybe there will never be a demand for it...
