This reminds me of a description of war I heard somewhere;
War is farm boys from one side of the brook killing farm boys from the other side.
Don't remember where it comes from and it is possibly (or rather probably) not the exact wording.
The meaning, as I take it, that the soldiers on both sides are very much the same as each other and don't have any personal reason to want to kill each other.

with little knowledge on who they were fighting.
