Description
Well, I figured it was time to do an illustration for my absolute, all-time, favorite book: 'Winter's Tale' by Mark Helprin. If you're into magical realism, you should check it out - it's truly a beautiful and wonderful read. Not to go into too much detail, but this is the scene when Athansor, Peter Lake's flying white horse, rises from the sea with a young Christiana on his back. I was (again) trying for Arthur Rackham's style - I'm mostly happy. I can't really accomplish the layers and layers of tinting that make his works so great, but I tryRelated content

My sister has had this on the wall for well over a decade, so it's nice to stumble on it here

So few people have even heard of this book -- I adore it, and I think that you did Athansor and Christiana justice! <3

Rackham was always one of my favorites. Love the old style of illustrations-and you've done a really nice job in his style.

I love this picture. It reminds me of a dutch tale The White Horse of Volendam.
I always loved that fairytale.

Wow, I'm so glad I found your work! I love the colors and the line art. This is what fairy tale books should use for their drawings! Great piece! I'm so gonna look this book up btw, I remember a cover of "Dealing With Dragons" by Partricia C. Wrede drawn with a similar style and I'm wondering if you ever read her books as well? *imagining the stories drawn out* sorry, had a moment

Wonderful work, truly! I first saw this image way back when on Elfwood, long before I moved over to dA. And I loved it then and I love it still, I'm so happy to have accidentally stumbled over it once more

I love 'Winter's Tale' and I think you have perfectly captured Athansor's strength. Yet he also looks quite weary..very beautiful. I think it would be interesting to see your depiction of Peter Lake

Hi! I've featured this deviation in my Sunday Features journal this week.
If you have any objections, just let me know and I'll remove your piece from the journal.

I just finished reading this book yesterday. My mum read it 20-some years ago and she got it for me for Christmas; one of the most enchanting and beautiful books I have ever read. I was drawn in by the first page and hardly put it down.
I love your depiction of this scene; though I hadn't thought of him that way, I love how tired and weatherbeaten Athansor looks, but how he's still so powerful and strong.
I'd love to see your mind's eye version of Peter Lake? ^_^
Beautiful work.
