Description
***EDIT * Per a recent request by another deviant, I resized the original file to make it smaller and easier for viewing. If there's any discernible pixilation or color fringe, then please let me know! I'll try to upload a slightly larger version of this if that ends up being the case. Thanks!***
After about a month of pattern drafting and constructing (plus another week or 2 of struggling to take some nice photos), I present my completed plush of Mu from Final Fantasy XII! I took some liberties with Mu’s design, but all in all I think it’s a fair approximation of Mu (or Spee, as they share the same in-game model), and I’m super pleased with how it turned out! Now it just needs a name!
I made Mu here in the hopes of submitting it to projecteducate 's recent fan artisan craft contest, but alas I missed the deadline. Still, I’m glad to have had the opportunity to make it – the dreamhares from Final Fantasy XII are just so adorable and I’ve been wanting to make one for several years, but until now I haven’t been able to justify the time and expenses necessary to make one.
In regards to Mu’s construction, Mu’s body, fur collar, and tail are made of 3 different faux furs as well as a knit fabric used as an interior lining. The eyes are painted resin, and the ear feathers are composed of faux fur and 2 layers of printed fabric (painted by myself using Clip Studio Paint and Photoshop CS5). The ear feathers maintain their shapes and stay aloft by the combined efforts of fabric stiffener and wire stitched into place down the center of each quill.
Mu is approximately 22.5 inches tall from its toes to the top of its ear feathers, 21 inches across from left to right ear feathers, and about 20 inches from the front of its fur collar to the back of its beach ball-sized tail. It’s easily the largest craft I’ve ever made!
Anywho that’s all the major points regarding Mu’s construction, but you can find additional info (as well as additional artwork and works in progress that I have yet to post here on DeviantArt) at my professional Facebook page here: www.facebook.com/jennyoungart/
Support there is always appreciated!

Thank you so much for everything, SinistrosePhosphate ! And I'd love to join in on another craft or fan art contest (and maybe even finish on time ) if projecteducate ever hosts another one!

You are more than welcome!
Like what I said, it's been both a pleasure and an honour to be able to walk through this process with you.
I am not fully sure when we'll run another contest, but if we do, we'll definitely let you know!

Had you made the deadline I think you would have won, because wow, this turned out lovely. I don't know the character at all so I can't judge it on accuracy, but it is damn cute, and looks so very cuddly/squishable.

Aww thank you so much! I'm so glad you like it! The character is one of the (many) monsters from Final Fantasy XII - here's what it looks like in-game if you want to check it out: finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Mu…
In regards to accuracy, I took some liberties with the color palette because of fabric availability as well as some liberties with the shapes of it's anatomy to make it slightly more rabbit-like, but on the whole I think it's a reasonable approximation. And regardless, I think it's super cute, so I'm glad to finally have one now! (Even if it is taking up a significant portion of my crafting table by being as large as it is )

Whoa it looks so cute and really well made!
That file size tho hahah. Almost crashed my computer. Zoomed out it's kinda small and zoomed in it's way too big

Alrighty, I uploaded a lower res version of my original file, since DA's presets were all way too small. Hopefully it looks ok - I generally try to avoid resizing my images in Photoshop whenever possible, because I'm afraid of the result having pixelation or color fringe. It's important to me that my work gets presented in a format where it can be viewed large & up close since I put so much time and effort into it That's actually one of the big reasons I still upload artwork to DeviantArt - more and more lately, I've seen talented artists leave DeviantArt and only upload their work onto other social media sites, which is unfortunate because DA is really the only place I've found that allows for large viewing of images.

Oh yeah I definitely understand you there, I used to want to upload all my stuff in full res exactly because of that. I'm trying to break the habit now though, both because of art theft, and because too big resolutions can be unconvenient to look at when you have to scroll up, down, left and right to see it all xD And yes, using DA to resize it for you can leave it blurry since it kinda crops pixels inbetween for some reason. Facebook is even worse, as I believe it converts all files to .gif or .jpg and reduces the file quality in order to make it take up less space. The best option is resizing them on your own, and personally, I've seen that .png has the best quality. I have noticed that resizing things in photoshop can change the quality, but it was at an almost unnoticable scale, and I only saw it because I converted the same file also in Paint Tool SAI and could compare the two. I still use photoshop for my photos tho because I've never had any real issues with it.
And btw your work's definitely much easier to see now!

Good I'm glad that it's better now! I shoot in RAW format on my camera, so photo files always end up being absolutely enormous, even when I save lower res jpegs of my files I'm just gonna have to really force myself to resize things in Photoshop, even if it makes me nervous. Anywho thanks for the input! I put a lot of hard work into Mu, so I really want people to be able to take a good look at it

Haha yeah sorry about that. I've started uploading things as "original size" rather than any of DA's preset resolutions because I've had several deviations that just look blurry when not at "original size." I don't know why that is - everything that I upload to my portfolio at a small size looks nice and crisp there, but when I upload stuff at a small res to facebook or a larger res here it's hit or miss as to whether it appears blurry .It's super frustrating! *sigh* I'll check that quick now and see if any of the presets aren't blurry. Sorry again, and I'm glad you like him!

Oh my gosh, it's so fluffy! I'm amazed at how well you blended the multiple types of fluff, and the feathers are really impressive.
