Description This was an idea I had back in January, when ~flying-squid asked me to describe an ideal world:

It is a planet covered in deciduous sequoia-sized trees: in autumn their leaves would look like a FIRESTORM. They grow directly out of oceans in which whales and harmless jellyfish forests and all kinds of awsm marine life exist...

There are turn-of-the-19th-century H.G. Wells-style Utopian people (minus diseases, racism, and sexism): monocles, frills, top hats, the whole shebang. They'd have integrated their aesthetically pleasing fancy brick homes and wrought-iron gates and lace curtains and antique furniture into the ecosystem. It's set up like Victorian treehouses connected by networks of lightweight and elegant yet sturdy bridges. There'd be carriages, but most people would be content with bicycles. Including that old-fashioned kind with one bigass wheel and one little one. YES.

Technology would be optimistic, inventive--sometimes impractical, but without involving the destructive side of industrialization. Probably lots of steam and hydraulic power? Clockwork mechanics? The inventor's guild would figure out a way to install elevators to the trees without harming them, so people could travel vertically between the dock and the branch levels. Down by the water surface, there'd be wooden docks encircling the bases of the trees and floating gardens. And ports for gondolas, seaplanes, and a few flying whales for long distances...

I'd better stop before I write a novel. but mash the ocean, Yosemite, the late 19th century, and Venice together, basically.

...THAT WAS FOUR MONTHS AGO. This took entirely too long, seriously! I'm so happy it's finished. xD

22 x 16 in. , colored pencil.

CATHERIIIINE

This piece is amazing. And huge. And amazing. And amazingly huge, and hugely amazing.

It may have taken you forever, but every little ounce of effort and love you put into it shows! You can see it in all the tiny details, from the different stones in the sidewalks to the bars on the gates and windows..!
It's so peaceful, and it pulls off symmetry perfectly. And the people look so happy just to be there.

Also, you put the various media you used together seamlessly; you can't really tell where the pastel starts and the prisma ends. Only you and your ailing wrists will ever knoooow.

In short.

This is amazing.
You are amazing.
This is exactly what you described when you answered that blog meme four months ago.
And, again.
Amazing.

Bah, bah. Oh geez, those details...I am simultaneously horrified (still) by the amount suffering they took and happy that it shows, thank you!

Also glad the media blend, ahaha~ Seriously, crayons. Never again.

Heaploads of thanks, ahhh. It was a good question.

That type of old style bicycle you're describing? It's called a penny farthing bicycle. How brilliant is that? Nearly as brilliant as the things that come out of your head. This is beautiful and whimsical and I love every detail.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

blueLudebar In reply to SomethingFerocious [2009-04-28 03:32:13 +0000 UTC]

Didn't know that! The fact that it has any relation to the word "penny" (and therefore Lincoln, ahaha) makes that kind of bicycle even more awesome, if that was possible.

Ahh wow--thank you so, so much!

SomethingFerocious In reply to blueLudebar [2009-04-28 03:37:47 +0000 UTC]

Ha ha! Glad to help increase your love of weird antiques.

(And because I'm a nerd: I think the penny/farthing thing has to do with the relationship in the size of the wheels. The little one looked like a penny to the larger one's farthing.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

blueLudebar In reply to SomethingFerocious [2009-04-28 03:46:19 +0000 UTC]

Oh whoa, is that why? That makes such perfect whimsical sense.

*wiki'd it*
Apparently it's the other way 'round: the large one is the penny to the smaller wheel's farthing. British currencyyy. 8D I...really love these bicycles now. Best kind of nerding out ever!
