COLOR EDIT: At last!
I finally have a technique for cel inking that I'm satisfied with. No more tweaks.I think.
Apologies for the stereotypical Frollo fire background.

It's just a happy coincidence that is polling on Frollo's best outfit this week.
Much as I love his bat-like robe/houppelande/whatever, is quite correct: he also looks like a boss in this one (and at this age. . . .) Gotta love the cape.

My final experiment will be learning to draw with the erasable colored pencils that animators use, followed by "inking" with a lead pencil. Then all your sketchwork can be easily eliminated on the computer. I'm really quite pleased with myself--I'd long suspected this was the actual Disney process, and I just recently confirmed that I was right.
That process should be a lot faster than what I did here--a few hours of messing with paths and pen settings to fake a hand-drawn effect. Hardly practical if I want to break out the light box and try some animation down the road. . . .

Yeah, it's that combination of perspective with the clean lines of architecture that's making me pull out my hair. It must be correct and straight, but still freehand. Endless, endless tweaking. . . .

I'm loving the Disney Screencaps website; it's really helped me get a feel for the characters and their construction, so I can get beyond simple copying.

Disneyscreencaps.com The uploads are fantastic quality. It's like getting to hold the painted backgrounds in your hands and put your nose right up to them. You see all the detail and texture, and of course you get a better appreciation for character movement, squash and stretch and so forth. There's a whole art education in those pictures.
