PLEASE NOTE THAT ZELGIUS AND PETRINE’S LAGUZ BACKGROUND HAS NEVER BEEN REVEALED AND THUS THIS IMAGE IS NOT NECESSARILY CANON.Been awhile. If you wanna know what kept me from doing anything for a whole year, then you can go to my journal.

Zelgius: NOT CONFIRMED AS HAWK BRANDED. But he excels at strength and speed (despite his heavy armor) and his brand has the shape of a bird. I srsly doubt he’s either raven or heron....
His armor was hard to sketch, hard to outline and hard to colour.
In future, I’ll only draw him naked... oh yeah…Stefan: CONFIRMED as lion branded. His ending title says it all and his jap. name makes it obvious who his ancestor was: Soan, the beast laguz hero of Ashera and founder of the Gallian tribe (Stefan’s name in jap. is Soanvalcke).
I kinda like alot how he came out. The yellow in his hair looks good...(as if that’s all that counts)

Micaiah: CONFIRMED as heron branded. Btw, I want to point out that Sanaki could be, but DOESN’T have to be a branded. The brand shows up rather randomly on someone who comes from a laguz-beorc relationship.
Failcaiah in the center. I don’t like her because she likes to get herself killed in my playthroughs, personality-wise I like her though. Can’t deny her the center position since she’s the main protagonist and the heron fitted best to this pose. But I like how the lights came out.

Soren: CONFIRMED as black dragon branded which is badass. The center-trio are all descendants to the chosen heroes of the goddess Ashera. Somehow ironic, but absolutely awesome!
You know, sometimes I fantasize that in a century or two Soren’s able to transform because of whatever reasons(advanced feral drugs maybe?), and then he spits thunderbolts, lava and tornados at people’s heads. Haaah… The bottomless pit of my head…

Petrine: NOT COMFIRMED AS RAVEN BRANDED. Kinda hard to explain… I think she is a somewhat cowardly and insincere person. Her death, her clinging to life and power somehow made me associate her with ravens. It’s also power and fear that makes her stay on Ashnard’s side, not some knight’s loyalty or love for Daein. That and from all laguz she hates ravens the most. Admittedly, my arguments are wacky, but hey! This is a fanart. I wanted a Quintet, I wanted Petrine and I thought Ravens fitted her the best.

Speaking of Branded, I always wondered if Volke could possibly be a Branded. As he's very secretive, uncomfortable in crowded places, seems to be able to get anywhere instantly, (via fireman express possibly) and his name means Wolf in Russian, also being that he's a lone wolf. Could it be possible that he's a Wolf Branded?

They are beautiful swords >.< and I agree. The chara designers for FE9/10 were really really amazing
Zelgius actually stole them from Begnion's treasures I think.
And he can wield only one of them (which still makes him sooooo badass epic).
But it makes me think of Altina (Begnion's very first empress) who wielded them dual o_0 I wonder how a showdown between those two would have gone down xDDD

But it doesn't make much sense carrying two such heavy weapons if only one can be used (just picture the characters ACTUALLY carrying 8 different weapons in their inventory >.< they shouldn't be able to move an inch)

Personally, I believe that your depictions of Zelgius and Petrine's ancestry is fairly accurate, though I will point out that it is also possible that Zelgius may have come from a tiger, which also have fairly decent Speed, and excel at strength.
As for your comment on Micaiah being 'failcaiah', well, I'll admit she's frail, but if your actually using strategy in this strategy game, she shouldn't be getting hit at all, or at least not very often, to begin with, and should only be dishing out damage. Her personality kind of sucks in my opinion. Everyone in the game loves her, for no explicit reason beyond the fact that she can apparently see into the future. Even Izuka, who seems to hate her, still respected her. In fact very few people she seems to be around for any real length of time don't like her, and even they respect her. Total mary-sue in my opinion.
Petrine really does resemble a raven in human skin, but considering her weapon is meant to take out beasts, not birds, I'd be more inclined to think she came from a cat. But then again, since beasts are probably the most common for her to ever encounter, she probably just wanted a weapon to deal with the ones she most likely would end up fighting.
Still, considering the branded age slower, it makes me wonder just how old Stefan and Petrine are. I'd wager that Zelgius was at least 70 or 80 years old when he died, maybe even 90, depending on when the Daein Army forces a retirement for a soldier, as it was at least 20-23 years later that he ended up dying, and everyone can assume that Micaiah and Soren are around 18-25, just looking at the timeline. Micaiah might be a little older then that, but not much, especially considering neither look like they're much older then 13-15.
My best guess on Stefan's age is about 150, maybe even 200 if we push it. Petrine couldn't be too much older then that, if she even broke triple digits.

haha I see that you enjoy discussing about the Branded. I don't mind those walls of text though ^^
Tigers actually have the worst speed in the beast tribe. Their SPD is even slower than Lance/Sword Marshalls, so... Also Zelgius's brand has the shape of a bird. How much that represents is debatable, but I'd call it a major hint by the chara designers.

Seriously if I had problems with the strategies I wouldn't love the game this much. It's just simple math and the moody RNG and the worst luck for her. Thus Failcaiah.
You know that your arguments why Micaiah is a Mary Sue, can also be applied to why Ike would be a Gary Stu, right? Everyone loves him, even the Empress he openly insulted. He changes racist opinions (Lethe, Jill, Reyson, Tibarn). (Shinon has no relation to Micaiah, otherwise he'd probably be hateful to her too fufufufu) I also love Ike, and I don't particulary like Micaiah, but looking at it from a neutral perspective, Micaiah is Ike's RD counterpart in every aspect (except for the badassness and accepting their new noble title... oh and the usefullness in battle...) They were both designed to be charismatic leaders, thus their popularity in-game.
What makes her Mary-Sue is that she has no personality FLAW. How can a Branded growing up in Daein not be a racist??

I honestly never noticed much difference in speed for tigers and hawks. Maybe I just get really lucky with the tigers then.
Anyways, I guess your just really unlucky with Micaiah, cause she dodges almost everything for me. And I never said that Ike wasn't a Gary Stu, I just didn't bring him up. In my opinion both Ike and Micaiah are essentially a Gary Stu/Mary Sue. I like their combat prowess, although I guess some don't like Micaiah's, but I'm not fond of their personalities, because both of them are just to unreal. Nobody is that nice, helpful, and accepting.
It's like you said, how can a Branded grow up in Daein, or even running around the continent, as she did for a little while, and not be a racist, or at the least, incredibly bitter? It simply shouldn't be possible, even with the heron powers she inherited.

Somebody actually came up with the theory for what laguz blood Zelgius and Petrine held. It was that they interacted with a certain laguz from a specific tribe during the game. In Path of Radiance, the same held true for Soren (who had direct confrontation with Nasir, who, as we all know, is a dragon). It was the same for Petrine who had interaction with many of the Kilvas Ravens, namely, Naesala. For Zelgius, he had an encounter with Tibarn in Radiant Dawn.

Yeah, I thought of that too. Like how Petrine hated the ravens the most so maybe she already had a past encounter with them(and as we also all know that the laguz are the more fierce branded haters).
But looking at it from a realistic point, meeting someone has absolutely nothing to do with the heritage and relation. i.e. the BK has actually more of a connection to Ranulf than Tibarn(already in PoR, and he was the first one to identify him; BK also met Skrimir and indirectly Caineghis). Same goes for everyone else. Soren and Skrimir had a funny but connecting interaction and Soren has overall strong feelings for Gallians(o the hate!!) As for Petrine: Daein was famous for doing laguz hunts, especially with Gallians since it's the nearest. So she must have dealt with a lot of beasts before the game time.
There are still other examples I could name... Even if the producers intended those encounters with an underlying meaning, that's no valid argument. It just inspires theories about them.

Yeah, Micaiah is...difficult from the start...hell what am I saying, she pisses me off in battle at the beginning, but once I leveled her up all the way in each tier, she became pretty bad-ass. Bring her up well and she is near impossible to beat in the final part...even without Sothe. Or maybe that is just me.

Well, there was this one battle with her that traumatized me... First part final is one HARD map. Micaiah actually IS really useful with Thani, I even enjoyed using her (I enjoy Mages in general, flashy magiiic

In the Endgames she maxes pretty much everythin that's important to her(except for Spd and Def)... I still haven't forgiven her.

Yeah, I hate those moments, but look at it this way...at least she is not Rhys. Sorry, but as much as I like the Greil Mercenaries, he is probably the one that tries my patience the most so I do not even bother with him anymore. Nowadays the only Priest class units I worry about leveling up are Micaiah and Laura.

Seriously? I absolutely love each of the GM, and dislike using each of the Dawn Brigade. Well, I guess it's all about what kind of experience the units give you. At the beginning Rhys doesn't double at all and he has to be shielded all the time (which is the case with pretty every mage unit...RD rly destroyed them), but when he became a saint he was a tank!! Very useful in the Grann Desert map, you just have to give him Nosferatu und be aware of swordmasters and crossbows. But he, Naesala and minimal use of Skrimir cleared the entire map no probs.
I can't tell whether Laura is better, becuz for some reason the DB gets really bad and underleveled in my playthroughs, and I'm trying to keep the usage of BK, Nailah and Muarim down!

I personally love Laura. Granted, she has a pretty low growth rate in Resistance for a Priest but her growth rate in Speed is practically double compared to Rhys and also has a high Growth rate in Magic and Skill which can be capped easily. Not to mention the chance to double strike is much greater as well as her high speed being able to negate an enemies chance to double strike her. As for the Dawn Brigade in general, they tend to be underrated quite often and even though most of them start out pretty low, the level grind is actually worth it. Some of them in my opinion also turn out to become just as or maybe more reliable than most of the Greil Merceneries. Laura is one of them in my opinion as well as Nolan and most of all, Meg and Fiona.

Really? Meg and Fiona? As far as I've heard they are one of the most difficult units to raise(personally I wouldn't know, I keep my paws of the DB and the few first battles I've had with them didn't motivate me to use them further...) And the only-healing function of 1st tier Laura is also troublesome (In PoR the only reason which motivated me to use Mist and Rhys was a GM-walkthrough). I usually have to spend Bexp on Nolan, Leo and Eddie to get by.
You played RD on hard? For some reason I had to abuse the reset-button more on the first part than on the other three parts and on the chapters I have to play them. I think after level-grinding if RNG doesn't fuck you up every unit can be worth it. But DB takes rly more effort than any other group or RNG on my console is just rly, rly mean to them.

I love those two personally. I guess I should add Aran in there too because he is actually my top favorite member, but I will agree that the Dawn Brigade in general does start out as a hassle, especially if you do not have the patience for it and believe me...it was one hell of a chore on Hard Mode to level grind them to their third-tiers. Easy mode and Normal mode is no problem. Hard mode is where you want to pull your hair out in stress but then realize that once there, they were so worth it. Then again, that is just me.

Gee you got my respect. I guess most don't put the effort needed into them in the first place. Whenever I have to play them in Hard I just long for the next chapter where I don't have to. Or maybe I just don't like them enough. I also choose units based on how likable they are to me as persons. And since they're no support-convos in RD(which is a real shame) the player doesn't really get to know the DB as much as any other group. I think they would be a hell lot more popular if we got to know their stories, because without it, they seem so 2-dimensional.

Yeah, that is something about Radiant Dawn I was disappointed with. Amazing game overall, but without the Base Support Conversations that Path of Radiance once had, it did make it difficult for people to connect with the characters and make them likeable. I would have loved to learn about how Leonardo and Edward met and how they became such close friends. We kind of got that with Micaiah and Sothe but maybe a little too much. There is also how Laura and Aran bring up that they are childhood friends, but that is all you learn. All you get from either of them after that is the part when she gets the sleep staff from Aran, invites Aran into the Dawn Brigade (mistaking them as good bandits) and the small talk that Laura has with Duke Numida before they attack each other. Other than that, nothing. Nolan...what inspired him to start the Dawn Brigade and why did he relinquish and give de facto leadership to Micaiah? I could go forever with this, because they indeed left so many holes in the story-line in terms of the Dawn Brigade.

Well, it's just the originals, and it never could replace the support-convos. I think it came from an interview with the producers... But sure, you get to know abit of their past, but it'd have been something entirely else if the characters influenced by their attitudes and feelings told about them.
I realize that it must be somewhat hard to do support-convos for charas who kinda already had them and their conflicts and past revealed. But still the DB are really neglected. I bet Laura and Aran would have an ending together, I think they're cute

Well damn...I wish more of that was put into the story-line. That would have been nice. And yeah, Laura and Aran are pretty cute and you would think that Laura and Aran would have had a nice ending together like most other close friends and couples, but sadly they do not get one. Even at A Rank, they get nothing.
