Description
This is a digital painting practice exercise. I tried to copy a photo as closely as possible. Since I'm working with a traced line drawing, and I'm sampling colors from the original, it's really just a matter of time and patience to get this kind of result. It's not, in my opinion, a work of art, since it's a copy of someone else's photograph. (I had no idea who this was, but as soon as I posted it a fellow deviant informed me she's an actress name Ali Larter. I just found the image on a site that was offering huge files full of photos to download. Since I'm just doing this for practice, I don't feel too bad about it. However, if this is your photo and you want me to take it down, just let me know.)I'll be posting close-ups in my Scraps folder.

Very well done! But I disagree with you about it not being considered a work of art. Digital painting of this degree in my opinion still requires the same skill level and knowledge that is applied in traditional work. Had you not a solid foundation in traditional methods you wouldn't have been able to achieve the same excellent result. My biggest problem with a lot of realism I've seen, is where people try to pass photomanips off as being paintings. boo But this is fantastic, you shouldn't have any apologies.

Thank you, DM. I see your point, about this being a work of art. I do draw on my traditional background, 35 years of practicing, etc, when I do this, and I'm mostly not aware of what I know. (I find this all the time when I write tutorials - there's always lots to explain that I normally take for granted.)
I guess my problem is I need to develop a recognizable style, one that is "commercial" and appealing to publishers, print companies, etc. So far, this has been illusive.
Thanks again for your input, taking time to write. I really appreciate it.

Great work.I have somehow the same view as you, though I reckon is a technically chanllenging excercise, I've a hard time to think of it as art work when it's traced, maybe it's just prejudice. But anyway, I know it's a vital part of the learning process, I guess it's just terrible when people make a living out of it or steal credit for self-glorification.
It's really cool of you that you describe the whole process, some wannabe would have told that they didn't trace and didn't even use reference(!) but just took inspiration on "x" picture of an actress they fancy...
Cheers!

Thanks for the input and kind words. I think my problem is wanting to develop a recognizable style. I need to use photographs without having them control me, you know? It's an ongoing struggle. Eventually I will win!
In general, I think that the final image is all that matters, whether it's a "manip" or drawn by hand, or traced. But it should look different from the source, you should make it your own. And I feel like these "photocopies" are not any different than what the photographer created. So I'm not being creative, just technically proficient.

This is incredible!
I'm also trying to paint realism by copying a photo as precisely as I can, but since I'm a beginner I like to say to myself it's kind of a work of art ahahaha. I hope I'll be able to copy a colored picture and then draw from scratch someday.
Anyway, I love your painting

Back when I worked traditionally (watercolor, etc), if I could paint something this realistic, I'd be very proud of it, and call it art. Doing it digitally, somehow, I feel it's not. I have issues.

I think youΒ΄ve done it very well - it looks so realistic, that I first thought itΒ΄s a photo, not a digitally painted image... Especially the eyes and hair are simply great!
ThereΒ΄s only her chin (and maybe the bottom of her nose) IΒ΄m not really sure with - in my opinion it looks too much plastic, but it could be beacause of the lighting...
All in all, itΒ΄s a brilliant piece of art
